In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. Where the priests feed the flock committed to them both by their word and by their example the people are preserved from many errors. From Defense of the Catholic Priesthood by St. John Fisher (1525; translated by Philip Hallet, 1934) Father Michael Costanzo was a man who wore his learning lightly. He was constantly reading and reflecting. I had many fascinating conversations with him over the years regarding his views on such figures as Edith Stein, Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, and Simone Weil, all of whose complete works he had immersed himself in. He was eager to share what he had learned from them, and encouraged me to read them as well

Well, look who\u27s here. Our new tenderfoot himself. Abby eased gently into the big wine-colored chair. The man across the room scowled and fiddled with his hands and looked at the floor. Emmie sighed ever so slightly. I told them we could handle this assignment ourselves. The man muttered. Well. This was an important case. Abby sniffed delicately. Emmie put her hand up\u27 to her mouth and whispered, It\u27s all right, Abby. They probably had to give him something to keep him busy. He won\u27t hurt anything. Mustn\u27t have professional jealousy, you know, the man added defensively

Sometimes, the first example one sees of a given type of wordplay becomes the ideal for all that follow. I showed a collection of palindromes to a friend who somehow had never encountered them before. In addition to ABLE WAS I ERE I SAW ELBA and RATS LIVE ON NO EVIL STAR, the collection included TEN ANIMALS I SLAM IN A NET and A MAN, A PLAN, A CANAL -- PANAMA

The ghosts of my student years in northern Cyprus

When the Booker nominee arrived at university, he found many fellow Nigerian students had been duped into enrolling. And for some, that was only the beginning of their troubles... The man who walked into my apartment that evening in 2009, carrying a strange light in his eyes, was not different from most of the African students I met on my first visit to northern Cyprus in 2007. There were only seven at Cyprus International University, one of the two universities in the capital city, Lefkosa (Nicosia), and all of them were Nigerian. They were the pioneers and had all come one semester earlier, in February, through the university’s representatives in Nigeria. They had all paid their tuition, accommodation and other fees through these representatives who, as is often the case, had fleeced them and their sponsors by inflating the figures and pocketing the excess. I arrived with a cultivated resistance to the culture of middlemanism, known in Nigeria as “who you sabi” (“who you know”). It was the rich soil from which the dark flowers of bribery, favouritism, opportunism and all forms of corruption sprouted, stretching their protean tendrils into every sector of society. When a Nigerian sees an advertisement for a job opening, she or he simply goes to find someone – an uncle, an aunt, a distant relative, a friend who might know someone who might be connected to someone at the top of that firm. To the typical Nigerian, the ad is purely informational, a notification that there is an opening; it is not an invitation to apply. It was easy for these agents to bait Nigerian students. All they needed to do was tell them that northern Cyprus was a nation in Europe for which no visa was required, that it was safe for a Turkish transit visa. I had come to Cyprus as a last resort, after failing to secure a visa for a British school; most other students had planned their move

The Co-occurrence of child and intimate partner maltreatment in the family: characteristics of the violent perpetrators

This study considers the characteristics associated with mothers and fathers who maltreat their child and each other in comparison to parents who only maltreat their child. One hundred and sixty-two parents who had allegations of child maltreatment made against them were considered. The sample consisted of 43 fathers (Paternal Family—PF) and 23 mothers (Maternal Family—MF) who perpetrated both partner and child maltreatment, together with 23 fathers (Paternal Child—PC) and 26 mothers (Maternal Child—MC) who perpetrated child maltreatment only. In addition, 2 fathers (Paternal Victim—PV) and 23 mothers (Maternal Victim—MV) were victims of intimate partner maltreatment and perpetrators of child maltreatment and 7 fathers (Paternal Non-abusive Carer—PNC) and 15 mothers (Maternal Non-abusive Carer—MNC) did not maltreat the child but lived with an individual who did. Within their family unit, 40.7% of parents perpetrated both intimate partner and child maltreatment. However, fathers were significantly more likely to maltreat both their partner and child than mothers and mothers were significantly more likely to be victims of intimate partner violence than fathers. PF fathers conducted the highest amount of physical and/or sexual child maltreatment while MC and MV mothers perpetrated the highest amount of child neglect. Few significant differences between mothers were found. PF fathers had significantly more factors associated with development of a criminogenic lifestyle than PC fathers. Marked sex differences were demonstrated with PF fathers demonstrating significantly more antisocial characteristics, less mental health problems and fewer feelings of isolation than MF mothers. MC mothers had significantly more childhood abuse, mental health problems, parenting risk factors and were significantly more likely to be biologically related to the child than PC fathers. This study suggests that violent families should be assessed and treated in a holistic manner, considering the effects of partner violence upon all family members, rather than exclusively intervening with the violent man

It\u27s certainly rare to see people with animal heads while walking down the street, but it has been known to happen. On the occasions when a person does see someone with an animal head, they think something along the lines of, Oh, what a quaint performer! or something equally as posh and oblivious. Peter, however, was a man who didn\u27t trust his own reasoning. Not if he could help it. So, when he happened to see a person with an animal head while walking down the street one fine Saturday, he paid attention. There it was, down the alley: a tall man in plain, amorphous clothes with a massive lizard head where his face should be. He seemed to be listening to the man who stood opposite him. This other was as big as a linebacker but, thankfully, human. Peter pretended to himself that he had gotten an itch in one of his eyes so he could justify rubbing them. When he opened them again, the man with the animal head was still there, animal head and all. From where he stood, Peter could hear the voices of the men in the alley. Rather, he could hear that they were speaking. The noises of the city kept him from hearing the words. He felt a miniature war rage in his gut. On one side, the soldiers of morbid curiosity. On the other side, nerves. Curiosity won in the end, however, and in an action with consequences Peter had no way of understanding, he edged into the alley and squatted behind a garbage can

Emilio Betti was not only one of the greatest Romanists and jurists of the contemporary era, but he was also a historian and philosopher. As a legal scholar, his writings on the great themes of legal his-tory and on the philosophers who have dealt with them certainly de-serve reconsideration and critical evaluation. In addition, Betti’s anal-ysis of the role of jurists and their prudential deserves attention. These include analyses and reflections on the different eras of Ro-man history, both during the Republic and in subsequent eras, which are still of absolute relevance today. In particular, it is the debate on pandectics and the importance of the critique of European pandectics that marks an epochal shift in the study of law. Betti was an eminent scholar of law, who studied it in all its forms, always studying law from a historical and dynamic perspective, and had been a teacher not only of Roman law, but of various legal disciplines, and above all of subjects that had the current law as its object, in particular con-temporary law

Typedof the hotel but three Berkeley Professors, Profs. Ritler, Richardson and Basore, Wanda\u27s Latin Prof. you know. The poor man had blisters and was awfully sunburned, so I gave him a lot of cotton and talcome powder, and he was extremely grateful. We had all three of the Professors up around our camp fire after supper and had a beautiful visit with them. They left here this morning, on foot, for Yosemite. I also met a Mr. Phelps here last night, who had just come from Yosemite. He said that the President and Papa came down into the Valley the day they left, so the people had one glimpse of them. Mr. Phelps said that he shook hands with them both. This is the day papa starts east. Have you heard09185 [from?] him yet?I am so happy here. The grossbeaks are singing in the Sugar Pines and everything is so blissfully happy. Tomorrow we start for Hech Hechy. I will write several times while I am there, but I will not have a chance to send letters for about two weeks, so dont think we have forgotten to write.I must stop now so good bye till next time.LovinglyHelen
