    The inherent price of indulgence

    Get PDF
An indulgent algorithm is a distributed algorithm that tolerates asynchronous periods of the network when process crash detection is unreliable. This paper presents a tight bound on the time complexity of indulgent consensus algorithms. We consider a round-based eventually synchronous model, and we show that any t-resilient consensus algorithm in this model, requires at least t+2 rounds for a global decision even in runs that are synchronous. We contrast our lower bound with the well-known t+1 round tight bound on consensus in the synchronous model. We then prove the bound to be tight by exhibiting a new t-resilient consensus algorithm in the eventually synchronous model that reaches a global decision at round t+2 in every synchronous run. Our new algorithm is in this sense significantly faster than the most efficient indulgent algorithm we know of, which requires 2t+2 rounds in synchronous runs. Our lower bound applies to round-based consensus algorithms with unreliable failure detectors such as ⋄ P and ⋄ S, and our matching algorithm can be adapted to such failure detector

This paper presents a tight lower bound on the time complexity of indulgent consensus algorithms, i.e., consensus algorithms that use unreliable failure detectors. We state and prove our tight lower bound in the unifying framework of round-by-round fault detectors. We show that any P -based t-resilient consensus algorithm requires at least t+2 rounds for a global decision even in runs that are synchronous. We then prove the bound to be tight by exhibiting a new P-based t-resilient consensus algorithm that reaches a global decision at round t + 2 in every synchronous run. Our new algorithm is in this sense significantly faster than the most efficient indulgent algorithm we knew of (which requires 2t + 2 rounds). We contrast our lower bound with the well-known t + 1 round tight lower bound on consensus for the synchronous model, pointing out the price of indulgence

    Money and Sustainability

This paper overviews the political-economics of FIAT and asset-based money. The paper further highlights the presumably syariah standpoint of the impartiality character of money as the fundamental factor that differentiates money from her conventional counterpart. The paper argues that while it is ideal for asset-based money to make a comeback in the interest of holistic wellbeing (maslahah) of humankind, it necessarily be complemented by an appropriate financial and regulatory system to safeguard its impartiality, i.e., viz, non-tradable, non-interest bearing, and non-debt financing to avoid the recurring pitfalls which are immanent in conventional financial system. It is hoped this rather concise paper will offer a thought provoking discourse on how syariah principles may present the world a useful ideological construct for a new monetary and financial architecture in light of the global financial crises.Financial crises; Neutrality of money; FIAT money; Asset based money; Islamic perspectives of money; Financial regulatory system; Money and sustainability

The Role of Dynamic Capabilities While Expanding a Nonprofit Abroad

The purpose of this senior capstone is to research and fully comprehend the dynamic capabilities field of strategic management as well as the experience students at Bryant University’s Zhuhai campus are having. I gained insight into the Bryant Zhuhai student experience by surveying professors and students who have been users of the campus for at least one semester. The data collected from these surveys was analyzed with excel, analysis enabled researchers to identify trends in student experience. The survey questions are tailored to understand the university’s sensing, seizing and transforming capabilities. The sensing question set focuses on uncovering how well Bryant Zhuhai senses students wants and needs, as well as trends in the higher education industry in China. The seizing question set aids us in understanding how quickly the university is able to adapt and innovate to remain current and keep its student’s educations relevant. The transforming question set provides insight into how well the school implements new programs and adjusts to better serve students. Once data has been analyzed the researchers can identify any critical areas needing improvement and develop feasible solutions and action plans that could be implemented to improve The Bryant Zhuhai student experience

    Competitive Product Advantages

Cost advantages may be either internal or external. Internal economics of scope, scale, or experience, and external economies of focus or logistical inteÂŹgration, enable a company to produce some products at a lower cost than the competition. The coordination of pricing with suppliers, although not actually economizing resources, can improve the efficiency of pricing by avoiding the incrementalization of a supplier's nonincremental fixed costs and profit. Any of these strategies can generate cost advantages that are, at least in the short run, sustainable. Even cost advantages that are not sustainable, however, can generate temporary savings that are often the key to building more sustainable cost or product advantages later. Even when a product's physical attributes are not readily differentiable, opportunities to develop product advantages remain. The augmented product that customers buy is more than the particular product or service exchanged. It includes all sorts of ancillary services and intangible relationships that make buying the same product from one company less difficult, less risky, or more pleasant than buying from a competitor. Superior augmentation of the same basic product can add substantial value in the eyes of consumers, leading them to pay willingly what are often considerable price premiums.decision, investments , cost.

Justifiable justifications in sequential indulgent choice situations: A framework for future research based on perceived exceptionality

    Get PDF
Much can be learned from studying the effectiveness of consumers’ justifications for their behavior across multiple sequential choice occasions, but research on this topic is scarce. In response, the present research puts forth a conceptual framework for addressing vice-virtue dilemmas through the lens of repeated justifications for indulgent choice based on the notion of perceived exceptionality over time and the salient prior decisions that help to determine this exceptionality. The authors discuss their framework for a broader understanding of indulgent choice and decision-making patterns, as well as possible process mechanisms and specific avenues for future research
