An intuitive control space for material appearance
Many different techniques for measuring material appearance have been
proposed in the last few years. These have produced large public datasets,
which have been used for accurate, data-driven appearance modeling. However,
although these datasets have allowed us to reach an unprecedented level of
realism in visual appearance, editing the captured data remains a challenge. In
this paper, we present an intuitive control space for predictable editing of
captured BRDF data, which allows for artistic creation of plausible novel
material appearances, bypassing the difficulty of acquiring novel samples. We
first synthesize novel materials, extending the existing MERL dataset up to 400
mathematically valid BRDFs. We then design a large-scale experiment, gathering
56,000 subjective ratings on the high-level perceptual attributes that best
describe our extended dataset of materials. Using these ratings, we build and
train networks of radial basis functions to act as functionals mapping the
perceptual attributes to an underlying PCA-based representation of BRDFs. We
show that our functionals are excellent predictors of the perceived attributes
of appearance. Our control space enables many applications, including intuitive
material editing of a wide range of visual properties, guidance for gamut
mapping, analysis of the correlation between perceptual attributes, or novel
appearance similarity metrics. Moreover, our methodology can be used to derive
functionals applicable to classic analytic BRDF representations. We release our
code and dataset publicly, in order to support and encourage further research
in this direction
Helmholtzâs Physiological Psychology
Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894) established results both controversial and enduring: analysis of mixed colors and of combination tones, arguments against nativism, and the analysis of sensation and perception using the techniques of natural science. The paper focuses on Helmholtzâs account of sensation, perception, and representation via âphysiological psychologyâ. Helmholtz emphasized that external stimuli of sensations are causes, and sensations are their effects, and he had a practical and naturalist orientation toward the analysis of phenomenal experience. However, he argued as well that sensation must be interpreted to yield representation, and that representation is geared toward objective representation (the central thesis of contemporary intentionalism). The interpretation of sensation is based on âfactsâ revealed in experiment, but extends to the analysis of the quantitative, causal relationships between stimuli and responses. A key question for Helmholtzâs theory is the extent to which mental operations are to be ascribed a role in interpreting sensation
An aesthetics of touch: investigating the language of design relating to form
How well can designers communicate qualities of touch?
This paper presents evidence that they have some capability to do so, much of which appears to have been learned, but at present make limited use of such language. Interviews with graduate designer-makers suggest that they are aware of and value the importance of touch and materiality in their work, but lack a vocabulary to fully relate to their detailed explanations of other aspects such as their intent or selection of materials. We believe that more attention should be paid to the verbal dialogue that happens in the design process, particularly as other researchers show that even making-based learning also has a strong verbal element to it. However, verbal language alone does not appear to be adequate for a comprehensive language of touch. Graduate designers-makersâ descriptive practices combined non-verbal manipulation within verbal accounts. We thus argue that haptic vocabularies do not simply describe material qualities, but rather are situated competences that physically demonstrate the presence of haptic qualities. Such competencies are more important than groups of verbal vocabularies in isolation. Design support for developing and extending haptic competences must take this wide range of considerations into account to comprehensively improve designersâ capabilities

Dynamic urban projection mapping
âDynamic projection mappingâ is a variation of the best-known âprojection mappingâ. It
considers the perceptual analysis of the urban landscape in which the video projection and the
observerâs displacement speed are hypothesized. This latter, in particular, is variable and may
depend on factors not directly controllable by the driver (slowdowns due to accidents, rallies, etc.).
This speed can be supported and controlled by a number of traffic flow measurement systems. These
data are available on the internet, like Google Maps APIs and/or speed sensors located close to the
point of interest. The content of projection becomes dynamic and varies according to how the
observer perceives the vehicle: slow, medium, fast
On site challenges for the construction of 16-storey condominium: as observed by a young civil engineering technologist
The difference between an engineer and an engineering technologist is that, an engineer would mainly focus and produce structural designs based on engineering calculations, while the job of an engineering technologist is to execute the design in the real working environment by adopting flexible and critical technical ideas on-site. The challenges can be divided into two categories, namely design challenges faced by an engineer and the construction challenges faced by an engineering technologist. Thus, the job scope of an engineering technologist is relatively wider when compared to that of an engineer, as the engineering technologist would be dealing with the consultant, contractors and suppliers on site, while handling the in situ construction challenges. This requires basic understanding of engineering principles and technology, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, modern tools competency in software applications, designs and construction calculations, as well as communication and leadership skills all rolled into one. I have recorded my experience as a junior civil engineering technologist engaged in the construction works of a 16-storey condominium at Langkawi, Kedah. Included in the descriptions are in situ technical problems encountered, potentially unsafe working conditions, foundations, scheduling and housekeeping on site, among others. I hope that the information shared in this entry would make a good introduction and induction for juniors entering the work site, where my personal undertakings could serve as a guide and reminder for them
LeviSense: a platform for the multisensory integration in levitating food and insights into its effect on flavour perception
Eating is one of the most multisensory experiences in everyday life. All of our five senses (i.e. taste, smell, vision, hearing and touch) are involved, even if we are not aware of it. However, while multisensory integration has been well studied in psychology, there is not a single platform for testing systematically the effects of different stimuli. This lack of platform results in unresolved design challenges for the design of taste-based immersive experiences. Here, we present LeviSense: the first system designed for multisensory integration in gustatory experiences based on levitated food. Our system enables the systematic exploration of different sensory effects on eating experiences. It also opens up new opportunities for other professionals (e.g., molecular gastronomy chefs) looking for innovative taste-delivery platforms. We describe the design process behind LeviSense and conduct two experiments to test a subset of the crossmodal combinations (i.e., taste and vision, taste and smell). Our results show how different lighting and smell conditions affect the perceived taste intensity, pleasantness, and satisfaction. We discuss how LeviSense creates a new technical, creative, and expressive possibilities in a series of emerging design spaces within Human-Food Interaction
