    Telephone speech recognition via the combination of knowledge sources in a segmental speech model

    The currently dominant speech recognition methodology, Hidden Markov Modeling, treats speech as a stochastic random process with very simple mathematical properties. The simplistic assumptions of the model, and especially that of the independence of the observation vectors have been criticized by many in the literature, and alternative solutions have been proposed. One such alternative is segmental modeling, and the OASIS recognizer we have been working on in the recent years belongs to this category. In this paper we go one step further and suggest that we should consider speech recognition as a knowledge source combination problem. We offer a generalized algorithmic framework for this approach and show that both hidden Markov and segmental modeling are a special case of this decoding scheme. In the second part of the paper we describe the current components of the OASIS system and evaluate its performance on a very difficult recognition task, the phonetically balanced sentences of the MTBA Hungarian Telephone Speech Database. Our results show that OASIS outperforms a traditional HMM system in phoneme classification and achieves practically the same recognition scores at the sentence level

    AVATecH ― automated annotation through audio and video analysis

    In different fields of the humanities annotations of multimodal resources are a necessary component of the research workflow. Examples include linguistics, psychology, anthropology, etc. However, creation of those annotations is a very laborious task, which can take 50 to 100 times the length of the annotated media, or more. This can be significantly improved by applying innovative audio and video processing algorithms, which analyze the recordings and provide automated annotations. This is the aim of the AVATecH project, which is a collaboration of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI) and the Fraunhofer institutes HHI and IAIS.     Phonetic level annotation and segmentation of Hungarian speech databases

    The purpose of this paper is to give an outline of phonetic level annotation and segmentation of Hungarian speech databases at the levels of definition and speech technology. In addition to giving guidance to the definition of the content of a database, the technique of annotation and the procedure of manual segmentation, we also discuss mathematical models of computeraided semi-automatic and automatic segmentation. Finally, we are summing up our observations about the application of the procedures we gained during the processing of the MTBA Hungarian Telephone Speech Database

    PHONOTACTIC AND ACOUSTIC LANGUAGE RECOGNITION

    Práce pojednává o fonotaktickém a akustickém přístupu pro automatické rozpoznávání jazyka. První část práce pojednává o fonotaktickém přístupu založeném na výskytu fonémových sekvenci v řeči. Nejdříve je prezentován popis vývoje fonémového rozpoznávače jako techniky pro přepis řeči do sekvence smysluplných symbolů. Hlavní důraz je kladen na dobré natrénování fonémového rozpoznávače a kombinaci výsledků z několika fonémových rozpoznávačů trénovaných na různých jazycích (Paralelní fonémové rozpoznávání následované jazykovými modely (PPRLM)). Práce také pojednává o nové technice anti-modely v PPRLM a studuje použití fonémových grafů místo nejlepšího přepisu. Na závěr práce jsou porovnány dva přístupy modelování výstupu fonémového rozpoznávače -- standardní n-gramové jazykové modely a binární rozhodovací stromy. Hlavní přínos v akustickém přístupu je diskriminativní modelování cílových modelů jazyků a první experimenty s kombinací diskriminativního trénování a na příznacích, kde byl odstraněn vliv kanálu. Práce dále zkoumá různé druhy technik fúzi akustického a fonotaktického přístupu. Všechny experimenty jsou provedeny na standardních datech z NIST evaluaci konané v letech 2003, 2005 a 2007, takže jsou přímo porovnatelné s výsledky ostatních skupin zabývajících se automatickým rozpoznáváním jazyka. S fúzí uvedených technik jsme posunuli state-of-the-art výsledky a dosáhli vynikajících výsledků ve dvou NIST evaluacích.This thesis deals with phonotactic and acoustic techniques for automatic language recognition (LRE). The first part of the thesis deals with the phonotactic language recognition based on co-occurrences of phone sequences in speech. A thorough study of phone recognition as tokenization technique for LRE is done, with focus on the amounts of training data for phone recognizer and on the combination of phone recognizers trained on several language (Parallel Phone Recognition followed by Language Model - PPRLM). The thesis also deals with novel technique of anti-models in PPRLM and investigates into using phone lattices instead of strings. The work on phonotactic approach is concluded by a comparison of classical n-gram modeling techniques and binary decision trees. The acoustic LRE was addressed too, with the main focus on discriminative techniques for training target language acoustic models and on initial (but successful) experiments with removing channel dependencies. We have also investigated into the fusion of phonotactic and acoustic approaches. All experiments were performed on standard data from NIST 2003, 2005 and 2007 evaluations so that the results are directly comparable to other laboratories in the LRE community. With the above mentioned techniques, the fused systems defined the state-of-the-art in the LRE field and reached excellent results in NIST evaluations.

    EVALUATION OF INTELLIGIBILITY AND SPEAKER SIMILARITY OF VOICE TRANSFORMATION

    Voice transformation refers to a class of techniques that modify the voice characteristics either to conceal the identity or to mimic the voice characteristics of another speaker. Its applications include automatic dialogue replacement and voice generation for people with voice disorders. The diversity in applications makes evaluation of voice transformation a challenging task. The objective of this research is to propose a framework to evaluate intentional voice transformation techniques. Our proposed framework is based on two fundamental qualities: intelligibility and speaker similarity. Intelligibility refers to the clarity of the speech content after voice transformation and speaker similarity measures how well the modified output disguises the source speaker. We measure intelligibility with word error rates and speaker similarity with likelihood of identifying the correct speaker. The novelty of our approach is, we consider whether similarly transformed training data are available to the recognizer. We have demonstrated that this factor plays a significant role in intelligibility and speaker similarity for both human testers and automated recognizers. We thoroughly test two classes of voice transformation techniques: pitch distortion and voice conversion, using our proposed framework. We apply our results for patients with voice hypertension using video self-modeling and preliminary results are presented

    Latent Class Model with Application to Speaker Diarization

    In this paper, we apply a latent class model (LCM) to the task of speaker diarization. LCM is similar to Patrick Kenny's variational Bayes (VB) method in that it uses soft information and avoids premature hard decisions in its iterations. In contrast to the VB method, which is based on a generative model, LCM provides a framework allowing both generative and discriminative models. The discriminative property is realized through the use of i-vector (Ivec), probabilistic linear discriminative analysis (PLDA), and a support vector machine (SVM) in this work. Systems denoted as LCM-Ivec-PLDA, LCM-Ivec-SVM, and LCM-Ivec-Hybrid are introduced. In addition, three further improvements are applied to enhance its performance. 1) Adding neighbor windows to extract more speaker information for each short segment. 2) Using a hidden Markov model to avoid frequent speaker change points. 3) Using an agglomerative hierarchical cluster to do initialization and present hard and soft priors, in order to overcome the problem of initial sensitivity. Experiments on the National Institute of Standards and Technology Rich Transcription 2009 speaker diarization database, under the condition of a single distant microphone, show that the diarization error rate (DER) of the proposed methods has substantial relative improvements compared with mainstream systems. Compared to the VB method, the relative improvements of LCM-Ivec-PLDA, LCM-Ivec-SVM, and LCM-Ivec-Hybrid systems are 23.5%, 27.1%, and 43.0%, respectively. Experiments on our collected database, CALLHOME97, CALLHOME00 and SRE08 short2-summed trial conditions also show that the proposed LCM-Ivec-Hybrid system has the best overall performance
