How Authoritarian Leadership and Renqing Orientation Improve Tacit Knowledge Sharing

    Get PDF
Following an indigenous approach and fairness theory, we develop a theoretical model to investigate when and how authoritarian leadership will improve tacit knowledge sharing (KS). Drawing on survey data from 309 Chinese employees, we examine whether authoritarian leadership will affect procedural fairness (PF) perception and interactional fairness (IF) perception, which in turn, will affect tacit KS; and examine whether leader renqing orientation (LRO) will moderate these mediation processes. Our data demonstrate that authoritarian leadership is negatively related to IF perception, which is positively related to tacit KS. Moreover, authoritarian leadership significantly increases tacit KS intention through PF perception only when LRO is high. Authoritarian leadership significantly decreases tacit KS intention through PF perception and IF perception only when LRO is low. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed

The Impacts of Trust and Feelings on Knowledge Sharing among Chinese Employees

This article examines the differential effects of two types of trust (affect based and cognition based) and two types of feelings (ganqing and jiaoqing) on different knowledge-sharing processes (seeking, transfer, and adoption) among Chinese employees. The influences of these different types of trust and feelings on Chinese employees’ propensities to seek, transfer, and adopt explicit and tacit knowledge are also analyzed and discussed. The analysis shows affect-based trust increases knowledge transfer, while cognition-based trust is more important to knowledge seeking and adoption. Affect-based trust alone can facilitate the different processes of sharing explicit knowledge. Effective sharing of tacit knowledge, on the other hand, requires the simul-taneous support from affect-based trust and cognition-based trust. Ganqing and jiaoqing are also important in knowledge transfer and adoption. Either feeling may increase the likelihood to seek, transfer, and adopt explicit knowledge by itself. The influences of both feelings on tacit knowledge seeking, transfer, and adoption hinge on the presence of cognition-based trust

JEL classification: F2, M1This study aims to explore the factors impeding the knowledge transfer from European multinational corporations’ (MNC) headquarters to their subsidiaries in China. And the roles that the expatriates play in the process of knowledge transfer are also examined. A quantitative research method is adopted in this study. We collected 67 questionnaires in total responded by the European expatriates in China. The results indicate that the expatriates actively participate in a wide range of knowledge transfer areas and that seven factors related to various contexts are identified by the expatriates as the primary causes of the difficulties in the process of knowledge transfer. The analysis of the results, which is related to the overall contexts in China, is also presented. We conclude the study with the limitations and suggestions for future research.

Knowledge withholding intentions in teams: the roles of normative conformity, affective bonding, rational choice and social cognition

The decision of members in a knowledge-intensive team to withhold their knowledge may threaten the performance of the team. To address the problem of knowledge resource risk in project teams, we maintain that it is important to understand why team members choose to withhold their knowledge, conceptualized as knowledge-withholding intention. In line with the literature on effort withholding, the research on multifoci relations between justice perceptions and social exchanges, and social cognitive theory, we proposed that the social exchange relationships that individuals form in the workplace, their perceptions of justice, and their knowledge withholding self-efficacy would influence their knowledge-withholding intentions. Through a survey of 227 information system development team workers, we found that all social exchange relationship variables had a significant impact on knowledge-withholding intentions. However, the justice perception variables only indirectly influenced knowledge-withholding intentions through the mediation of social exchange relationships. In addition, one of the task variables, task interdependence, influenced knowledge withholding intention through the mediation of knowledge withholding self-efficacy. Our results contribute to the knowledge management literature by providing a better understanding of the antecedents of knowledge withholding. We also offer suggestions for future research utilizing the framework of Kidwell and Bennett (1993) to study effort and knowledge withholding

Drawing upon charismatic leadership and intrinsic motivation theory, we developed a theoretical model to examine the impact mechanism of charismatic leadership on employees’ tacit knowledge sharing intention in a temporary Enterprise Systems learning team. We conducted a survey-based field study to examine the theoretical model and hypotheses. A total of 153 questionnaires were distributed to ERP users of more than 20 subsidiaries of Beidahuang Group in China and 117 valid questionnaires were returned. Results from structural equation modelling analysis suggest that leader charisma has strong influence on psychological safety climate, which in turn has positive impact on individual’s intrinsic motivation and their tacit knowledge sharing intention. Our results unpack the impact mechanism of leader charisma on individual’s knowledge sharing behaviors, and provide guidelines for the team leader to exhibit appropriate leadership traits in order to promote a psychological safety climate and facilitate an effective knowledge sharing of Enterprise Systems

Due to the importance of knowledge in competitive today’s world, understanding of how to enhance employees’ knowledge is an essential issue. The objective of the present research is to study the role of social trust on willingness to share tacit and explicit knowledge between faculty members of Sistan and Balouchestan University. Population of the current research is university faculty member of Sistan and Balouchestan in 2013. The sample of this research consists of 155 persons . In order to collect required data to test the research hypothesis, a questionnaire was applied that its validity has been studied using SPSS software and confirmatory functional analysis method in addition to the professors’ views and management experts. Reliability is gained respectively 924 and 836 by Cronbach Alpha using SPSS software for a questionnaire measuring social trust and knowledge sharing. Correlation coefficient and multivariable regression were used to analyze and test research hypotheses. The results from this research indicates that the social trust and its components have positive and significant effect on individual’s willingness in sharing explicit knowledge and have a few effect on sharing tacit knowledg
