    Modelling the Multi in Multi-Party Communication

    This thesis investigates the effects of multimedia communications technology on the interaction of mixed- and same-role groups. The first study explores the effect of video and audio conferencing on small, role-differentiated problem-solving groups in the laboratory. The second laboratory study examines the impact of shared video technology on the communication of role-undifferentiated groups. A multi-faceted analytical approach is employed, including indices of task performance, process and content of communication, patterns of interaction and subjective user evaluations. Lastly, a field study looks at how the communication process of business meetings is affected by status constraints and audio conferencing technology. The findings show that both multimedia video and audio communications technology have similar impacts on the patterns of speaker contributions in different types and sizes of groups, and that the extent of their effect is influenced by the presence or absence of role differences between group members - whether experimentally manipulated in the laboratory or organisationally assigned roles in a naturalistic setting. Technology-mediation appears to exaggerate the impact of status and role such that group members say more disparate amounts and interact less freely than in face-to-face groups, in particular it exaggerates the dominance of one individual. Surprisingly, multimedia conferencing technology can support free and equal participation in groups whose speakers have similar roles but evidence of its effect on speakers of similar status is equivocal.     Computer-based communication in support of scientific and technical work

    Results are reported of the first experiments for a computer conference management information system at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Between August 1975 and March 1976, two NASA projects with geographically separated participants (NASA scientists) used the PLANET computer conferencing system for portions of their work. The first project was a technology assessment of future transportation systems. The second project involved experiments with the Communication Technology Satellite. As part of this project, pre- and postlaunch operations were discussed in a computer conference. These conferences also provided the context for an analysis of the cost of computer conferencing. In particular, six cost components were identified: (1) terminal equipment, (2) communication with a network port, (3) network connection, (4) computer utilization, (5) data storage and (6) administrative overhead

    New communication technologies enable an array of new working and learning scenarios in which knowledge is being communicated. This article deals with the question to what extent these technologies can impede or facilitate knowledge communication. First, the various computer-based communication technologies will be classified. Second, effects of the medium on knowledge communication will be discussed based on results of studies of the current special priority program "Net-based Knowledge Communication in Groups".     Business Meetings: A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Audio and Video Conferencing in Dispersed Teams

    Increasing the effectiveness of meetings in dispersed teams is crucial to the success of many businesses today. The virtual aspect of meetings conducted with teams of people who are not in the same geographical space has the potential to create communication barriers. Although research has been done on face-to-face, audio, and video meetings, little has been done to compare the effectiveness of audio and video conferencing amongst these teams. Since effectiveness is such a subjective term, the effectiveness of the meetings will be determined by the four mediating constructs: level of multitasking, time management, participation and accomplishment. Participating in the study is a team of no more than ten employees from a Semiconductor company in southern Maine who regularly communicate with other team members in Singapore. A survey of twenty questions was created using SurveyMonkey.com, which was subsequently completed by those employees in attendance. Although the sample size was too small to run any statistical data, observations were made about general trends to explore in further research. From the data that was collected, it can be assumed that video conferencing is the more effective form of communication for dispersed teams, but requires a lot more preparation and practice than audio conferences

    Changes in the business environment, responses of companies to these changes and the available information and communication technologies (ICT) pose a number of challenges to present and future product developers, as well as to educational institutions. An appropriate response to these challenges is to create a solid basis for strategies to combat stronger competition, since existing educational programs have provided this only to a small extent. In our opinion, the E-GPR course carried out by 5 European universities reflects the tasks of professional product development teams and their work conditions as realistically as possible and will enable students attending the E-GPR course who will soon enter the professional world to later progress along a steeper learning curve.
