Towards A Practical High-Assurance Systems Programming Language
Writing correct and performant low-level systems code is a notoriously demanding job, even for experienced developers. To make the matter worse, formally reasoning about their correctness properties introduces yet another level of complexity to the task. It requires considerable expertise in both systems programming and formal verification. The development can be extremely costly due to the sheer complexity of the systems and the nuances in them, if not assisted with appropriate tools that provide abstraction and automation.
Cogent is designed to alleviate the burden on developers when writing and verifying systems code. It is a high-level functional language with a certifying compiler, which automatically proves the correctness of the compiled code and also provides a purely functional abstraction of the low-level program to the developer. Equational reasoning techniques can then be used to prove functional correctness properties of the program on top of this abstract semantics, which is notably less laborious than directly verifying the C code.
To make Cogent a more approachable and effective tool for developing real-world systems, we further strengthen the framework by extending the core language and its ecosystem. Specifically, we enrich the language to allow users to control the memory representation of algebraic data types, while retaining the automatic proof with a data layout refinement calculus. We repurpose existing tools in a novel way and develop an intuitive foreign function interface, which provides users a seamless experience when using Cogent in conjunction with native C. We augment the Cogent ecosystem with a property-based testing framework, which helps developers better understand the impact formal verification has on their programs and enables a progressive approach to producing high-assurance systems. Finally we explore refinement type systems, which we plan to incorporate into Cogent for more expressiveness and better integration of systems programmers with the verification process
Convex Optimization for Machine Learning
This book covers an introduction to convex optimization, one of the powerful and tractable optimization problems that can be efficiently solved on a computer. The goal of the book is to
help develop a sense of what convex optimization is, and how it can be used in a widening array of practical contexts with a particular emphasis on machine learning.
The first part of the book covers core concepts of convex sets, convex functions, and related basic definitions that serve understanding convex optimization and its corresponding models. The second part deals with one very useful theory, called duality, which enables us to: (1) gain algorithmic insights; and (2) obtain an approximate solution to non-convex optimization problems which are often difficult to solve. The last part focuses on modern applications in machine learning and deep learning.
A defining feature of this book is that it succinctly relates the “story” of how convex optimization plays a role, via historical examples and trending machine learning applications. Another key feature is that it includes programming implementation of a variety of machine learning algorithms inspired by optimization fundamentals, together with a brief tutorial of the used programming tools. The implementation is based on Python, CVXPY, and TensorFlow.
This book does not follow a traditional textbook-style organization, but is streamlined via a series of lecture notes that are intimately related, centered around coherent themes and concepts. It serves as a textbook mainly for a senior-level undergraduate course, yet is also suitable for a first-year graduate course. Ab Initio Language Teaching in British Higher Education
Drawing extensively on the expertise of teachers of German in universities across the UK, this volume offers an overview of recent trends, new pedagogical approaches and practical guidance for teaching at beginners level in the higher education classroom. At a time when entries for UK school exams in modern foreign languages are decreasing, this book serves the urgent need for research and guidance on ab initio learning and teaching in HE. Using the example of teaching German, it offers theoretical reflections on teaching ab initio and practice-oriented approaches that will be useful for teachers of both German and other languages in higher education.

Improving the Manufacture by Flexographic Printing of RFID Aerials for Intelligent Packaging
Flexography is a well-established high-volume roll-to-roll industrial printing process that has shown promise for the manufacture of printed electronics for smart and intelligent packaging, particularly on to flexible substrates. Understanding is required of the relationship between print process parameters, including ink rheology, and performance of printed electronic circuits, sensors and in particular RFID antenna. The complexity of this printing process with its shear and extensional flows of complex inks and flexible substrates can lead to undesirable surface morphology to the detriment of electronic performance of the print. This thesis reports work that progresses the understanding of the complex relationships amongst relevant factors, particularly focusing on the printability of features that have an impact on printed RFID antenna where increases in resistance increase the antennas resonant frequency. Flexography was successfully used to print RFID antenna. However, the large variation in print outcomes when using commercial inks and the limits on resistivity reduction even at the optimal print parameters necessitated the systematic development of an alternative silver flake ink. Increases in silver loading and TPU polymer viscosity grade (molecular weight) increased the viscosity. The ink maintained its geometry from the anilox cell between rollers, on to the substrate and print surface roughness increased. This, however, did not increase resistance of the track due to the high silver loading. Better understanding of the relationship between print parameters, print outcomes, ink rheology and performance of an RFID antenna has been achieved. Increases in silver loading up to 60wt.% improved conductivity. However, further increasing the silver loading produced negligible additional benefit. An adaption of Krieger-Dougherty suspension model equation has been proposed for silver at concentrations over 60wt.% after assessing existing suspension models. Such a model has proven to better predict relative viscosities of inks than Einstein-Batchelor, Krieger-Dougherty and Maron-Pierce equations. Increasing TPU viscosity grade was found to be a promising ink adjustment in the absence of changing print parameters, to produce a more consistent print. Better prediction of ink behaviour will allow for improved control of ink deposition, which for RFID applications can improve ink conductivity, essential for good response to signal. Further developments such as addition of non-flake particles and formulation refinement are required to enable the model ink to match the resistivity of the commercial ink
Mars delivery service - development of the electro-mechanical systems of the Sample Fetch Rover for the Mars Sample Return Campaign
This thesis describes the development of the Sample Fetch Rover (SFR), studied for Mars Sample Return (MSR), an international campaign carried out in cooperation between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA). The focus of this document is the design of the electro-mechanical systems of the rover.
After placing this work into the general context of robotic planetary exploration and summarising the state of the art for what concerns Mars rovers, the architecture of the Mars Sample Return Campaign is presented. A complete overview of the current SFR architecture is provided, touching upon all the main subsystems of the spacecraft. For each area, it is discussed what are the design drivers, the chosen solutions and whether they use heritage technology (in particular from the ExoMars Rover) or new developments. This research focuses on two topics of particular interest, due to their relevance for the mission and the novelty of their design: locomotion and sample acquisition, which are discussed in depth.
The early SFR locomotion concepts are summarised, covering the initial trade-offs and discarded designs for higher traverse performance. Once a consolidated architecture was reached, the locomotion subsystem was developed further, defining the details of the suspension, actuators, deployment mechanisms and wheels. This technology is presented here in detail, including some key analysis and test results that support the design and demonstrate how it responds to the mission requirements.
Another major electro-mechanical system developed as part of this work is the one dedicated to sample tube acquisition. The concept of operations of this machinery was defined to be robust against the unknown conditions that characterise the mission. The design process led to a highly automated robotic system which is described here in its main components: vision system, robotic arm and tube storage
