Affordances of visual representations and sense-making of science

    Get PDF
Visual thinking is essential in the development of science. Visual representations are also indispensable when scientists disseminate their findings. This paper discusses the ways that research studies on visual representations can inform science learning and teaching. I start by discussing the ways that drawings, charts and graphics represent their referents, and hence highlighting the affordances of these visual representations. Then I discuss how these affordances make visual representations a valuable tool to support science teaching in formal and informal contexts and, in particular, how learning with media graphics can support the learning of Nature of Science for scientific literacy

An Interactive Power System Analyzer With Graphics For Educational Use

    Get PDF
The paper presents a student-oriented power system analyzer with an interactive graphics display. Its capabilities include studies of (1) load flow, (2) load and generation, (3) voltage level control, (4) economic dispatch, and (5) contingency and planning analysis. Power network configurations of up to 30 buses can be presented clearly on one screen. The interactive nature of this program makes such studies effective and easy to use. With the support of a computer with graphics software and many graphics terminals, this program can be a useful teaching tool for power system studies. Get PDF
Teaching and learning in mathematics curriculums in Universities by using mathematical software can be a difficult and demanding task, especially for novice learners. This paper presents efficient mathematical tool for teaching and learning of Linear Algebra courses. MAPLE software tool was used for teaching and learning of parts of the Linear Algebra course. Using MAPLE in teaching and learning mathematical concepts is a great challenge both from a didactical and a scientific point of view. In this paper we provide mathematical examples by using mathematical software and necessary steps as evidences that didactically it increases mathematical skills. By using interactive Maple worksheets and animated graphics, students can find the opportunity of numerous experiments that provide well understanding. Further the use of Maple provide conceptual and meaningful understanding for the student, several Maple can be designed to see, geometrical application of Linear Algebra topics. Indeed, utilizing ICT and particular the use of interactive facilities of Maple in teaching and learning which will provide a new challenge to both mathematics educators as well as students

This paper aims to review on how infographics can be used efficiently in education primarily as a teaching and learning tool. The term of infographic refers to the combination of information and graphics. Infographic is a medium to a representation of info and graphics that can communicate to diverse audiences, and the meaning can be understood quickly. Therefore, the application of infographics as data visualisation has a potential to be utilised in teaching and learning as a tool to facilitate the process of understanding the intended content

PREZI, CLOUD-BASED PRESENTATION, FOR TEACHING: HOW IS IT INTERESTING?

This study aims at analyzing reflection of the use of prezi as instructional media for teaching English in Indonesian context. Prezi is presentation software which is not commonly used in Indonesia producing a cloud-based presentation and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. This study is conducted based on the previous survey study done by Fox et.al (2016) finding that all of the students in their study preferred prezi rather than power point as a presentation tool in the areas of ease of use, fun to use, text, graphics, and usage in future presentations. However, this study has a purpose to reflect the student-teacherā€™s experience when using prezi in teaching English. To obtain the data, journal writing and self-observation by using video recording are used. It deeply investigates: 1) how he creates prezi for teaching English and 2) challenges and benefits of using it for teaching. The finding revealed that prezi is a powerful tool attracting the studentsā€™ attention which creates better classroom atmosphere and meaningful learning experience. On the other hand, it encourages the teacher to have high access of internet and be creative on making prezi presentation

Electronic didactic tool for primary schools in Czech Republic

    Get PDF
The purpose of the paper was to create some electronic education tool for the elementary school in the Czech Republic and to implement it there. Through multimedia courses the graphics programs Zoner Callisto, Gimp and Picasa were presented to pupils. Created multimedia courses lead students to learn the basics of graphics programs. Courses that make up the lesson can be used as a standalone didactic tool, or as part of the teaching process in the primary schools. The theoretical part is focused on the basic concepts that affect teaching AIDS and virtual learning environments. In the practical part, the own tool for the given programs is presented. It is concluded with the evaluation of the quantitative research of the created didactic tool
