    Get PDF
Engineering and operations of modern engineered systems depend critically upon detailed design and operations knowledge that is accurate and authoritative. A design and operations knowledge support system (DOKSS) is a modern computer-based information system providing knowledge about the creation, evolution, and growth of an engineered system. The purpose of a DOKSS is to provide convenient and effective access to this multifaceted information. The complexity of Space Station Freedom's (SSF's) systems, elements, interfaces, and organizations makes convenient access to design knowledge especially important, when compared to simpler systems. The life cycle length, being 30 or more years, adds a new dimension to space operations, maintenance, and evolution. Provided here is a review and discussion of design knowledge support systems to be delivered and operated as a critical part of the engineered system. A concept of a DOKSS for Space Station Freedom (SSF) is presented. This is followed by a detailed discussion of a DOKSS for the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and Work Package-2 portions of SSF

This thesis, Design History and the Human Experience, is a course which offers a new approach to teaching design history by presenting the material through a historical/popular culture lens. The research and content organizing methodology will show how design is part of a larger context reflecting and creating the culture we live in. When design history includes an emphasis on the historical and cultural contexts, the designer\u27s work takes on deeper meaning and relevance. The underlying philosophy of the thesis, Design History and The Human Experience, argues that design does not occur in a vacuum but emerges from many social, cultural and historical influences. This thesis demonstrates the relationship between design and these influences, and offers a methodology for presenting and teaching the material. The course also takes into account the importance of critical mediation and considers at the circumstances surrounding the critical evaluation of the designers\u27 work, for it is through this evaluation process that certain work is given prominence in design history while other designers go unmentioned

Today, we are surrounded by web media. With new technologies, web design has been advancing day by day. The web industry continues to expand in its commercial use. As a result, designing web graphics is an essential part of graphic design. As a computer graphics designer, it is natural to study web design to develop good design skills. For my thesis, I wanted to research good design solutions for web graphics and make a prototype from the results. From the research, I wanted to learn the differences and similarities between printed media and digital media in graphic design using the topic, The Greatest Designers in American Graphic Design . There are two reasons that made me choose my thesis topic. After studying graphic design as an undergraduate student, I was interested in some of the greatest graphic designers in the world. The Bauhaus, the Crystal Palace, and many other historical subjects were enough to make me excited about the subject. The first reason I decided on my thesis subject was to reflect my interests in the history of graphic design and to learn more about these graphic designers\u27 artwork and their huge influence on graphic history. The other reason is that there are not enough web sites about graphic designers or the history of graphic design itself on the Internet for my research. Most information can be accessed on the Internet but I hardly found any useful web sites about graphic designers. As a result, my thesis will provide a good chance for students and other people related to the field to find out some information on design. The content of the site should focus on these factors. First, the content should be historical. It will have to include each designer\u27s chronology, biography, and artwork. Second, the con tent should be informative. From the beginning, thesis projects start under the precondition of pro viding information to students who study graphic design as well as graphic designers. The site should inform interested people like other educational web sites. Third, the content should be simple. Even though the thesis project provides important information for designers, its content should be simple. Due to the fact that people easily lose patience with web sites, my thesis site should not include a lot of text to grasp the user\u27s attention continuously

Meet the Others: Comprehending Crowdsourcing Graphic Design Practice in Indonesia

Visual communication design (VCD) research has so far been dominated by the study of artifacts rather than the design process. The study of the VCD process from a design perspective has not been taken seriously. The stagnation of research for design is influenced by the establishment of the modern design world along with its standard methods. Meanwhile, the world has changed, supported by advances in internet technology that is forming new systems and arrangements. Crowdsourcing is a phenomenon when the internet as an information medium develops into social media and crowd-based capital. The industrial revolution 4.0 gave rise to new companies with information technology platforms. One popular area of crowdsourcing is graphic design. The graphic design crowdsourcing page brings together a community of designers and clients from all over the world. Indonesia providesone of the biggest graphic design crowdsourcing actors in the world. This research tries to go beyond standard, by preferring a study of designer community. Community members are seen as subjects who have knowledge of work experience in crowdsourcing graphic design systems. The large number of crowdsourcing designers in Indonesia who have survived in the community since 2008 certainly wasnot instantly formed. The phenomenon of crowdsourcing graphic design community in Indonesia in building theirexistence can be important knowledge when we are open-mindedly examiningthe presence of others. The paper sets out an overview of a pragmatic research investigation initiated within a doctoral enquiry, and which continues to inform design practice and pedagogy. Located within the fields of typography and information design, and very much concerned with design history, enquiry emphasized exploration of alternative design research methodologies in the production of a design outcome loaded with pedagogical ambition. The issue being addressed within the investigation was the limited scope of existing typeface classificatory systems to adequately describe the diversity of forms represented within current type design practice and thus, recent acquisitions to an established teaching collection in London. Addressing this issue unexpectedly came to utilize the researcher’s own design practice as a methodology for managing emergent enquiry, and for organizing and generating new knowledge through the employment of visual information management methods. A primary outcome of the enquiry was a new framework for the description of typeforms. This new framework will be described in terms of its operation, divergence from existing models and potential for application

The Work of Fred Troller: An Evaluative Study of a Graphic Designer

This thesis will provide a process to help graphic design scholars and historians conduct an evaluation of a designer whose work has been rarely documented within a specific design style. Through implementation of this model of research and evaluation, graphic design scholars will not only be able to identify that designer\u27s philosophy and personal style, they will also recognize the value of studying within a specific style of graphic design. This evaluation process includes placing the work of the rarely documented designer beside the work of pioneers in this stylistic idiom in order to highlight similarities of thought, process, form and implementation. The opportunity to do this recently arose with the donation of Swiss designer Fred Troller\u27s personal collection for inclusion in the Graphic Design Archive at Rochester Institute of Technology. Fred Troller\u27s work has remained largely undocumented. His work enables this thesis to determine a model by which the work of any rarely documented designer can be placed within an historical context. Rat holds sufficient comparable work within the Graphic Design Archive so that Troller\u27s work can be substantiated as an integral component of Swiss design, which was known for its strict use of mathematical grids, objectivity, and asymmetrical sans serif typography (flush left, ragged right). The evaluation process this thesis provides will enable the design scholar or historian to better understand an established design idiom. As a consequence, this knowledge can be appropriately applied to a design solution, rather than merely mimicking certain visual elements. For the purpose of this thesis, a Swiss \u27tool kit\u27 is a metaphor for the design characteristics that must be learned before the designer can explore the characteristics to capture the style of a certain movement. Within this figurative tool kit, a lexicon of Swiss design characteristics can be found. After gaining a better understanding of each syntactical term in the tool kit, the characteristics may be used to enrich the possibilities for solving current graphic design problems

In this moment the way of understanding the role of design is considerably different from the past. This commentary provides the issues and possibilities of design thinking from the viewpoint of GK Dynamics, which has long been engaged in design focusing on mobility through pondering about “design thinking and how we are going to utilize it in business. The word design thinking has penetrated society and has been utilized in many scenes in companies and organizations, however various positive and negative opinions of its effectiveness exist. The interpretation of design thinking is diverse; some may believe it is a way to solve problems using designers\u27 thinking methods. The designer should already possess the ability in the first place. Also, one portion of the total solution does not have great value independently. Within a project, designers are required to have the ability to participate in the respective role of finding problems as a design thinker, presenting solutions as practical designers, and considering benefits as users in a timely manner. It is only now that the solution process as “design thinking” has been known widely, and whole society has recognized the importance and benefits of design, determining again the essence as what to do for various problems with human’s own imagination is getting significant
