    Analysis and Design of a Portal for Ionospheric Data

    Since 2004 DLR Neustrelitz operates the Space Weather Application Center – Ionosphere (SWACI). This Center is involved in several projects of the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) program of ESA and of EU FP7. It is largely based on services and tools of DLR’s Data and Information Management System (DIMS) and its long-standing User interface EoWEB. SWACI provides access to near real time products and ensures long-term preservation. The lecture will analyze the existing solution and various project-specific applications and will derive requirements for a recent user interface. In the second part the talk will draw a design of an user interface for the Ionospheric Monitoring and Prediction Center (IMPC), which continues utilizing existing services of DLR, offers OGC compliant interfaces and which is so generalized that future projects can be easily plugged in

    Model for Predicting Bluetooth Low Energy Micro-Location Beacon Coin Cell Battery Lifetime

    Bluetooth Low Energy beacon devices, typically operating on coin cell batteries, have emerged as key components of micro-location wireless sensor networks. To design efficient and reliable networks, designers require tools for predicting battery and beacon lifetime, based on design parameters that are specific to micro-location applications. This design science research contributes to the implementation of an artifact functioning as a predictive tool for coin cell battery lifetime when powering Bluetooth Low Energy beacon devices. Building upon effective and corroborated components from other researchers, the Beacon Lifetime Model 1.0 was developed as a spreadsheet workbook, providing a user interface for designers to specify parameters, and providing a predictive engine to predict coin cell battery lifetime. Results showed that the measured and calculated predictions were consistent with those derived through other methodologies, while providing a uniquely extensible user interface which may accommodate future work on emerging components. Future work may include research on real world scenarios, as beacon devices are deployed for robust micro-location applications. Future work may also include improved battery models that capture increasingly accurate performance under micro-location workloads. Beacon Lifetime Model 1.x is designed to incorporate those emerging components, with Beacon Lifetime Model1.0 serving as the initial instantiation of this design science artifact

    A WebGIS tool for the dissemination of earthquake data

    In 2004 a new seismic hazard map of Italy (MPS Working Group, 2004) has been released by a task force that produced an amount of new or updated data, such as a new version of the earthquake catalogue (CPTI04; CPTI Working Group, 2004) and an updated seismogenic zonation. A set of WebGIS tools has been designed for the data dissemination to the scientific community and the general public. The design of the WebGIS tools focused first on the consultation of the DBM04 macroseismic database (DBM Working Group, 2005), which contains the macroseismic intensity data-points (IDP) of the earthquakes listed in the CPTI04 catalogue. The WebGIS tool design and development process had to fulfill: 1) simplicity, 2) responsiveness and 3) readiness for future extensions. The specific requirements for the macroseismic database consultation interface were: - data access by place and by earthquake; - IDP maps with queryable points; - data download in both tabular and map format; - easily upgradable content; - quick and user friendly interface
