Identity-based tracking of products and product data in changing networks
The paper addresses a subject of high relevance for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) participating in today's changing supply chains. Product-centric application development and using design patterns to link related web-services directly to the electronic identity of products are proposed. To identify and track products the ID@URI identification scheme is advocated. The scheme combines serial numbers and URLs to produce globally unique product identifiers. The TraSer-project aiming at implementing an open-source solution platform for product centric web-services has been started this year. Based on the first phase of the project the paper also outlines differences and advantages of the TraSer-approach compared to other existing approaches
A bi-objective model for scheduling green investments in two-stage supply chains
Investing in green technologies to increase sustainability in supply chains has become a common practice for two reasons: the first is directly related to the defense of the environment and people’s health to smooth the emissions of pollutants; the second is the increasing consumer awareness of green products. Despite the higher costs of producing with green technologies and processes, there is also a higher markup on the price of products which rewards the former costs. This study proposes a mathematical model for scheduling green investments over time in a two-stage supply chain to minimize the impact of production on the environment and the economic costs deriving from the investment. The resulting bi-objective model has nonlinear constraints and is solved using a commercial solver. Given its complexity, we propose an upper-bound heuristic and a lower-bound model to reduce the optimality gap attained at a given time limit. Tests on synthetic instances have been conducted, and an example demonstrates the applicability and efficacy of the proposed model
Milk Run Design: Definitions, Concepts and Solution Approaches
Efficient inbound networks in the European automotive industry rely on a set of different transport concepts including milk runs - understood as regularly scheduled pickup tours. The complexity of designing such a mixed network makes decision support necessary: In this thesis we provide definitions, mathematical models and a solution method for the Milk Run Design problem and introduce indicators assessing the performance of established milk runs in relation to alternative transport concepts
Applied Materials uses operations research to design its service and parts network
Applied Materials Inc. is the global leader in nanomanufacturing technology solutions. It has a broad portfolio of innovative equipment, service, and software products and supports its customers worldwide with an extensive service and parts network with more than 100 locations. At the end of 2006, Applied Materials decided to evaluate and rationalize the design of its North American network. It set up a detailed optimization model (including 50,000 parts) to develop a network and distribution strategy. To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale multiechelon network-design model that incorporates safety stock inventory costs while considering the effects of lead time and risk pooling. The company used the model's recommendations to reduce costs while maintaining or improving its service to customers. The recommendations included simplifying the distribution network by consolidating depot locations for specific customers and skipping an echelon for others, thus leading to a projected inventory reduction of 5.24 million and total savings of $1.1 million can be attributed to these network changes. © 2010 INFORMS

From 03/08/2010 to 03/12/2010, the Dagstuhl Seminar 10102 ``Grand Challenges for Discrete Event Logistics Systems\u27\u27 was held in Schloss Dagstuhl~--~Leibniz Center for Informatics.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of
the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of
seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section
describes the seminar topics and goals in general.
