Multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm for integrated assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing
In assembly optimisation, assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing have been extensively studied because both activities are directly linked with assembly efficiency that influences the final assembly costs. Both activities are categorised as NP-hard and usually performed separately. Assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing optimisation presents a good opportunity to be integrated, considering the benefits such as larger search space that leads to better solution quality, reduces error rate in planning and speeds up time-to-market for a product. In order to optimise an integrated assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing, this work proposes a multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm that used discrete procedures to update its position and velocity in finding Pareto optimal solution. A computational experiment with 51 test problems at different difficulty levels was used to test the multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation performance compared with the existing algorithms. A statistical test of the algorithm performance indicates that the proposed multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm presents significant improvement in terms of the quality of the solution set towards the Pareto optimal set
Optimization as a design strategy. Considerations based on building simulation-assisted experiments about problem decomposition
In this article the most fundamental decomposition-based optimization method
- block coordinate search, based on the sequential decomposition of problems in
subproblems - and building performance simulation programs are used to reason
about a building design process at micro-urban scale and strategies are defined
to make the search more efficient. Cyclic overlapping block coordinate search
is here considered in its double nature of optimization method and surrogate
model (and metaphore) of a sequential design process. Heuristic indicators apt
to support the design of search structures suited to that method are developed
from building-simulation-assisted computational experiments, aimed to choose
the form and position of a small building in a plot. Those indicators link the
sharing of structure between subspaces ("commonality") to recursive
recombination, measured as freshness of the search wake and novelty of the
search moves. The aim of these indicators is to measure the relative
effectiveness of decomposition-based design moves and create efficient block
searches. Implications of a possible use of these indicators in genetic

Satellite downlink scheduling problem: A case study
The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology enables satellites to
efficiently acquire high quality images of the Earth surface. This generates
significant communication traffic from the satellite to the ground stations,
and, thus, image downlinking often becomes the bottleneck in the efficiency of
the whole system. In this paper we address the downlink scheduling problem for
Canada's Earth observing SAR satellite, RADARSAT-2. Being an applied problem,
downlink scheduling is characterised with a number of constraints that make it
difficult not only to optimise the schedule but even to produce a feasible
solution. We propose a fast schedule generation procedure that abstracts the
problem specific constraints and provides a simple interface to optimisation
algorithms. By comparing empirically several standard meta-heuristics applied
to the problem, we select the most suitable one and show that it is clearly
superior to the approach currently in use.Comment: 23 page
Metaheuristics and Their Hybridization to Solve the Bi-objective Ring Star Problem: a Comparative Study
This paper presents and experiments approaches to solve a new bi-objective
routing problem called the ring star problem. It consists of locating a simple
cycle through a subset of nodes of a graph while optimizing two kinds of cost.
The first objective is the minimization of a ring cost that is related to the
length of the cycle. The second one is the minimization of an assignment cost
from non-visited nodes to visited ones. In spite of its obvious bi-objective
formulation, this problem has always been investigated in a single-objective
way. To tackle the bi-objective ring star problem, we first investigate
different stand-alone search methods. Then, we propose two cooperative
strategies that combines two multiple objective metaheuristics: an elitist
evolutionary algorithm and a population-based local search. We apply this new
hybrid approaches to well-known benchmark test instances and demonstrate their
effectiveness in comparison to non-hybrid algorithms and to state-of-the-art
methods
Digital Ecosystems: Ecosystem-Oriented Architectures
We view Digital Ecosystems to be the digital counterparts of biological
ecosystems. Here, we are concerned with the creation of these Digital
Ecosystems, exploiting the self-organising properties of biological ecosystems
to evolve high-level software applications. Therefore, we created the Digital
Ecosystem, a novel optimisation technique inspired by biological ecosystems,
where the optimisation works at two levels: a first optimisation, migration of
agents which are distributed in a decentralised peer-to-peer network, operating
continuously in time; this process feeds a second optimisation based on
evolutionary computing that operates locally on single peers and is aimed at
finding solutions to satisfy locally relevant constraints. The Digital
Ecosystem was then measured experimentally through simulations, with measures
originating from theoretical ecology, evaluating its likeness to biological
ecosystems. This included its responsiveness to requests for applications from
the user base, as a measure of the ecological succession (ecosystem maturity).
Overall, we have advanced the understanding of Digital Ecosystems, creating
Ecosystem-Oriented Architectures where the word ecosystem is more than just a

Combinatorial optimisation of a large, constrained simulation model: an application of compressed annealing
Simulation models are valuable tools in the analysis of complex, highly constrained economic systems unsuitable for solution by mathematical programming. However, model size may hamper the efforts of practitioners to efficiently identify the most valuable configurations. This paper investigates the efficacy of a new metaheuristic procedure, compressed annealing, for the solution of large, constrained systems. This algorithm is used to investigate the value of incorporating a sown annual pasture, French serradella (Ornithopus sativa Brot. cv. Cadiz), between extended cropping sequences in the central wheat belt of Western Australia. Compressed annealing is shown to be a reliable means of considering constraints in complex optimisation problems in agricultural economics. Exact and heuristic approaches for multi-component optimisation problems
Modern real world applications are commonly complex, consisting of multiple subsystems
that may interact with or depend on each other. Our case-study about wave
energy converters (WEC) for the renewable energy industry shows that in such a
multi-component system, optimising each individual component cannot yield global
optimality for the entire system, owing to the influence of their interactions or the
dependence on one another. Moreover, modelling a multi-component problem is
rarely easy due to the complexity of the issues, which leads to a desire for existent
models on which to base, and against which to test, calculations. Recently,
the travelling thief problem (TTP) has attracted significant attention in the Evolutionary
Computation community. It is intended to offer a better model for multicomponent
systems, where researchers can push forward their understanding of
the optimisation of such systems, especially for understanding of the interconnections
between the components. The TTP interconnects with two classic NP-hard
problems, namely the travelling salesman problem and the 0-1 knapsack problem,
via the transportation cost that non-linearly depends on the accumulated weight
of items. This non-linear setting introduces additional complexity. We study this
nonlinearity through a simplified version of the TTP - the packing while travelling
(PWT) problem, which aims to maximise the total reward for a given travelling tour.
Our theoretical and experimental investigations demonstrate that the difficulty of a
given problem instance is significantly influenced by adjusting a single parameter,
the renting rate, which prompted our method of creating relatively hard instances
using simple evolutionary algorithms. Our further investigations into the PWT
problem yield a dynamic programming (DP) approach that can solve the problem in
pseudo polynomial time and a corresponding approximation scheme. The experimental
investigations show that the new approaches outperform the state-of-the-art
ones. We furthermore propose three exact algorithms for the TTP, based on the DP
of the PWT problem. By employing the exact DP for the underlying PWT problem
as a subroutine, we create a novel indicator-based hybrid evolutionary approach for
a new bi-criteria formulation of the TTP. This hybrid design takes advantage of the
DP approach, along with a number of novel indicators and selection mechanisms
to achieve better solutions. The results of computational experiments show that the
