Physically fit or physically literate? Children with special educational needs understanding of physical education

    Get PDF
The role of physical literacy within physical education (PE) has become a widely debated topic in recent years. Its role in educating children about physicality through embodiment, skill acquisition and reading the environment is argued to be of great benefit to children. However, whether children understand the role of PE in the development of these competencies is not clear, and this is even truer for children who have special educational needs (SEN). Drawing on qualitative phenomenological data from 30 children in key stages 2 and three (7 to 14 years of age) who have SEN, this paper explores notions of physical fitness and physical literacy as understood by children in PE lessons. It aims to gain insight into the ways that children understand the purpose of PE, and places these perceptions within a physical literacy framework, using the National Curriculum for PE (NCPE) as a foundation. Findings demonstrate that children with SEN perceive PE as a means for improving physical fitness, whereas concepts surrounding physical literacy appear to be lost. The paper concludes by making recommendations for factoring physical literacy components more forcibly into the PE curriculum, and through initial teacher training and continued professional development

Narrative in picture books, or, The paper that should have had slides

In this sense picture books resemble other combinative art forms, such as opera or musical theater, films, and ballet; older examples include the courtly masque and the emblem book. This resemblance is good for me, since I thrive on analogies (I was apparently permanently warped by that section of the SATs), and I therefore often find it useful to consider picture books along with those other media, without, of course, ignoring the fact that picture books also have their own individual charms and characteristics. I'd like to examine the aspects of the picture book the text, the art and other physical factors and then discuss how these narratives work together to affect each other and the final outcome.published or submitted for publicatio

Primjena art-ekspresivnih tehnika kod djece s kroničnim oboljenjem u području edukacijske rehabilitacije

During the past two decades the integrative approach which includes art-expressive techniques to encourage awareness and social and emotional development has begun to develop more intensely in the field of applied education and rehabilitation sciences. Within the framework of childhood chronic diseases, the field of psychosocial oncology has particular significance for the expansion of professional competences and the development of interdisciplinary communication. The experiences from paediatric oncology show that facing a disease and understanding its state is very traumatic and stressful experience for the child. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to indicate the importance of the influence of art-expressive techniques through the application of different media as an integrative approach. The paper aims to highlight the significance of art-expressive techniques applied to children suffering from malignant diseases in facing the physical and emotional stress during hospitalization. The implementation of art-expressive techniques took place in the paediatric ward for haematology and oncology of the Clinic for Children\u27s Diseases in Zagreb. The significance of the psychosocial support is emphasized through the application of children\u27s stories, drawings and pictures which can help the child\u27s emotional state. The results of the monitoring of the applied techniques indicated a positive effect on children who suffer pain and existential tension.Tijekom posljednja dva desetljeća u području primijenjenih edukacijskorehabilitacijskih znanosti počinje se intenzivnije razvijati integrativni pristup koji uključuje art-ekspresivne metode i tehnike za poticanje svijesti i socioemocionalnoga razvoja. U okviru kroničnih oboljenja u dječjoj dobi, područje psihosocijalne onkologije predstavlja posebnu važnost u širenju profesionalnih kompetencija i razvoja interdisciplinarne komunikacije.

Literary representations of maternity in the eighteenth century

The primary concern of this thesis is the representation, in the eighteenth century, of mothers' bodies. It is also concerned with the treatment of domestic duties which were supposed a consequence of a woman's very nature. Throughout the first seven decades of the century, medical men and virtuosi demonstrated particular interest in the nature of physicality, and especially in women's bodies, pregnancy, and childbirth. 1 will be testing out a widely-held view that dissection and new anatomical findings regarding women's bodies produced a new idealisation of motherhood, and that this was immediately translated into lay-medical and related discourse, and was thus firmly established in middle-class culture by the end of the century. The relationship between primary medical and lay-medical literature raises several questions: my work asks whether lay-medical literature mirrored medical writing, and whether there was a direct translation of material from one to the other. Lay-medical texts for women are especially interesting. They offer an insight into precisely what examples of female nature and correspondingly 'natural' behaviour were intended for women readers. Representations of maternity in specific forms of writing which rely heavily upon women for subject matter are further extended in the second half of this study. 1 have focussed upon two genres, conduct literature and narrative fiction. Neither is conventionally associated with medical or lay-medical discourse, yet both have significant links with these. Conduct literature and narrative fiction have much to offer in this attempt to recover what women were being taught about their bodies and roles; both were concerned with what the body displays externally, and with corresponding ideas of 'naturalness'. Conduct literature for women was enjoying a period of growth and change, and has obvious, direct links with medical texts. Narrative fiction also had important links with medical writing, and 1 will describe these. The dissemination of medical representations of the maternal body was a process which contributed to a contradictory cultural sense of female identity

Modifying Indonesian traditional games as media to improve English vocabulary of kindergarten and elementary schools’ students

Based on several sources, the English language proficiency of the Indonesian people is still in the low category. Indonesia is still below the average value of English language proficiency in the Asian region (53.00) or rank 5 below other ASEAN countries such as Singapore with a score (66.82), the Philippines (60.04), and Malaysia (58.55) at a very high level of proficiency, and Vietnam (51.57) in the intermediate proficiency level. The process of learning English can be carried out with a variety of media. However, because the object of the learning process is children, the use of modified traditional Indonesian games can be an option. This is because the world of children is the world of play. Indonesia has a lot of traditional games that can be utilized for the learning process, but in this case the writer focuses on offers to modify Kotak Pos, ABC Lima Dasar, and Engklek to be used for the learning process of children, in this case to improve children's vocabulary. Vocabulary is the focus of the writer because mastering a lot of vocabulary can be a very good capital for children to learn other language skills, for example speaking, writing, reading, and also listening. The author hopes that this writer's proposal can be used as a method used by parents and teachers to teach English in a fun way
