    Detection of inter-turn faults in multi-phase ferrite-PM assisted synchronous reluctance machine

    Inter-turn winding faults in five-phase ferrite-permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motors (fPMa-SynRMs) can lead to catastrophic consequences if not detected in a timely manner, since they can quickly progress into more severe short-circuit faults, such as coil-to-coil, phase-to-ground or phase-to-phase faults. This paper analyzes the feasibility of detecting such harmful faults in their early stage, with only one short-circuited turn, since there is a lack of works related to this topic in multi-phase fPMa-SynRMs. Two methods are tested for this purpose, the analysis of the spectral content of the zero-sequence voltage component (ZSVC) and the analysis of the stator current spectra, also known as motor current signature analysis (MCSA), which is a well-known fault diagnosis method. This paper compares the performance and sensitivity of both methods under different operating conditions. It is proven that inter-turn faults can be detected in the early stage, with the ZSVC providing more sensitivity than the MCSA method. It is also proven that the working conditions have little effect on the sensitivity of both methods.     Diagnosis of Inter-Turn Short Circuit for a Polyphase Induction Motor in Closed-Loop Vector-Controlled Drives

    The main objective of this paper is to develop and experimentally verify a new technique to detect an inter-turn short circuit in one phase of a stator winding of an induction motor energized from a vector-controlled drive. This is in order to overcome the fault masking difficulties associated with the concept of depending on the actual magnetic field pendulous oscillation between the conventional voltage and current space vectors with respect to a reference that is unaltered by the compensation action of the drive. This technique is based on the flux pendulous oscillation phenomenon. This flux pendulous oscillation is also described in this paper, this in addition to the magnetic field pendulous oscillation previously addressed in prior publications. The new approach has been verified through experimental results which are represented here

    Electrical and magnetic faults diagnosis in permanent magnet synchronous motors

    Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are an alternative in critical applications where high-speed operation, compactness and high efficiency are required. In these applications it is highly desired to dispose of an on-line, reliable and cost-effective fault diagnosis method. Fault prediction and diagnosis allows increasing electric machines performance and raising their lifespan, thus reducing maintenance costs, while ensuring optimum reliability, safe operation and timely maintenance. Consequently this thesis is dedicated to the diagnosis of magnetic and electrical faults in PMSMs. As a first step, the behavior of a healthy machine is studied, and with this aim a new 2D finite element method (FEM) modelbased system for analyzing surface-mounted PSMSs with skewed rotor magnets is proposed. It is based on generating a geometric equivalent non-skewed permanent magnet distribution which accounts for the skewed distribution of the practical rotor, thus avoiding 3D geometries and greatly reducing the computational burden of the problem. To diagnose demagnetization faults, this thesis proposes an on-line methodology based on monitoring the zero-sequence voltage component (ZSVC). Attributes of the proposed method include simplicity, very low computational burden and high sensibility when compared with the well known stator currents analysis method. A simple expression of the ZSVC is deduced, which can be used as a fault indicator parameter. Furthermore, mechanical effects arising from demagnetization faults are studied. These effects are analyzed by means of FEM simulations and experimental tests based on direct measurements of the shaft trajectory through self-mixing interferometry. For that purpose two perpendicular laser diodes are used to measure displacements in both X and Y axes. Laser measurements proved that demagnetization faults may induce a quantifiable deviation of the rotor trajectory. In the case of electrical faults, this thesis studies the effects of resistive unbalance and stator winding inter-turn short-circuits in PMSMs and compares two methods for detecting and discriminating both faults. These methods are based on monitoring and analyzing the third harmonic component of the stator currents and the first harmonic of the ZSVC. Finally, the Vold-Kalman filtering order tracking algorithm is introduced and applied to extract selected harmonics related to magnetic and electrical faults when the machine operates under variable speed and different load levels. Furthermore, different fault indicators are proposed and their behavior is validated by means of experimental data. Both simulation and experimental results show the potential of the proposed methods to provide helpful and reliable data to carry out a simultaneous diagnosis of resistive unbalance and stator winding inter-turn faults

    Detection and Diagnosis of Motor Stator Faults using Electric Signals from Variable Speed Drives

    Motor current signature analysis has been investigated widely for diagnosing faults of induction motors. However, most of these studies are based on open loop drives. This paper examines the performance of diagnosing motor stator faults under both open and closed loop operation modes. It examines the effectiveness of conventional diagnosis features in both motor current and voltage signals using spectrum analysis. Evaluation results show that the stator fault causes an increase in the sideband amplitude of motor current signature only when the motor is under the open loop control. However, the increase in sidebands can be observed in both the current and voltage signals under the sensorless control mode, showing that it is more promising in diagnosing the stator faults under the sensorless control operation

    This work proposes the zero sequence voltage component (ZSVC) of the stator three-phase voltages as a method for detecting winding inter-turns short circuits in permanent magnet synchronous motors PMSM operating under transient conditions. Additionally it proves the linear relationship between the ZSVC and speed, which is effectively used as a fault severity index. The acquired ZSVC temporal signal is processed by means of the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT).     This paper investigates the impact of load variation on the diagnosis of inter-turn stator faults in induction machines. The proposed detection technique relies on the analysis of stator current using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) in both normal and faulty states of the machine. The energy of the approximation and detail signals obtained from DWT provides valuable information about the machine's health and the severity of the inter-turn stator faults.     Investigation of Motor Supply Signature Analysis to Detect Motor Resistance Imbalances

    The trend to use inverter drives in industry is well established. It is desirable to monitor the condition of the motor/drive combination with the minimum of system intervention and at the same time retaining compatibility with the latest generation of AC PWM vector drives. This paper studies the effect of stator resistance asymmetry on the performance of the motor driven by a latest-generation unmodified AC PWM drive under varying speed conditions. The asymmetry of increased resistance in one phase is intended to simulate the onset of a failing connection between drive and motor but one that is non-critical and will remain undetected in use because the resistance increase is small and does not appear to affect the motor operation significantly. The performance is compared against baseline motor data for the resistance increase. Moreover, it is also examined following an auto-tune on the drive with the asymmetric motor in order to observe if any effects of resistance imbalance can be shown on the sensorless vector control algorithms. Initial results from the motor tests clearly show a difference in values measured from the motor current and voltage signals, which can be a useful indication of the asymmetry of the drive system

    Induction Machine Broken Bar and Stator Short-Circuit Fault Diagnostics Based on Three Phase Stator Current Envelopes

    A new method for the fault diagnosis of a broken rotor bar and interturn short circuits in induction machines (IMs) is presented. The method is based on the analysis of the three-phase stator current envelopes of IMs using reconstructed phase space transforms. The signatures of each type of fault are created from the three-phase current envelope of each fault. The resulting fault signatures for the new so-called ldquounseen signalsrdquo are classified using Gaussian mixture models and a Bayesian maximum likelihood classifier. The presented method yields a high degree of accuracy in fault identification as evidenced by the given experimental results, which validate this method
