    Modeling and Evaluation of Multisource Streaming Strategies in P2P VoD Systems

    In recent years, multimedia content distribution has largely been moved to the Internet, inducing broadcasters, operators and service providers to upgrade with large expenses their infrastructures. In this context, streaming solutions that rely on user devices such as set-top boxes (STBs) to offload dedicated streaming servers are particularly appropriate. In these systems, contents are usually replicated and scattered over the network established by STBs placed at users' home, and the video-on-demand (VoD) service is provisioned through streaming sessions established among neighboring STBs following a Peer-to-Peer fashion. Up to now the majority of research works have focused on the design and optimization of content replicas mechanisms to minimize server costs. The optimization of replicas mechanisms has been typically performed either considering very crude system performance indicators or analyzing asymptotic behavior. In this work, instead, we propose an analytical model that complements previous works providing fairly accurate predictions of system performance (i.e., blocking probability). Our model turns out to be a highly scalable, flexible, and extensible tool that may be helpful both for designers and developers to efficiently predict the effect of system design choices in large scale STB-VoD system

    Distributed delivery system for time-shifted streaming systems

    International audienceIn live streaming systems (IPTV, life-stream services, etc.), an attractive feature consists in allowing users to access past portions of the stream. This is called a time-shifted streaming sys- tem. We address in this paper the design of a large-scale delivery system for a time-shifted streaming application. We highlight the challenging characteristics of time-shifted applications that prevent known delivery systems to be used. Then, we describe the turntable structure, the first structure that has been specifically designed to cope with the properties of time-shifted systems. A set of preliminary simulations confirm the interest for this structure

    Abstract: In recent years, IP network has been considered as a new delivery network for TV services. A majority of the telecommunication industries have used IP network to offer on-demand services and linear TV services as it can offer a two-way and high-speed communication. In order to effectively and economically utilize the IP network, caching is the technique which is usually preferred. In IPTV system, a managed network is utilized to bring out TV services, the requests of Video on Demand (VOD) objects are usually combined in a limited period intensively and user preferences are fluctuated dynamically. Furthermore, the VOD content updates often under the control of IPTV providers. In order to minimize this traffic and overall network cost, a segment of the video content is stored in caches closer to subscribers, for example, Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), a Central Office (CO) and Intermediate Office (IO). The major problem focused in this approach is to determine the optimal cache memory that should be assigned in order to attain maximum cost effectiveness. This approach uses an effective Grate Deluge algorithm based Particle Swarm Optimization (GDPSO) approach for attaining the optimal cache memory size which in turn minimizes the overall network cost. The analysis shows that hierarchical distributed caching can save significant network cost through the utilization of the GDPSO algorithm

    More Than Movies: Social Formations in Informal Networks of Media Sharing

    This project examines the social structures, formations, and practices of informal networks of media sharing (INMSs) through both historical and sociological lenses. INMSs are comprised of individuals who distribute and circulate media to one another through noncommercial, unauthorized networks. The networks can be centered around texts, such as the early videophile publication The Videophile’s Newsletter, or they can be constituted by disparate groups of people who come together as a community using digital platforms like BitTorrent. While nominally concerned with circulating media, INMSs are also sources of social sustenance for their members and are sites of struggle for social and symbolic capital and power. They illuminate the complex ways in which community members utilize media as a starting point to satisfy a variety of needs, including developing bodies of cultural and technical knowledge, thinking through legal and ethical concerns, creating social bonds, and engaging in a variety of pedagogical practices. In short, INMSs are loci of social and cultural meaning-making for their members. This dissertation catalogs and analyzes the social practices and formations of three INMSs, the aforementioned Videophile’s Newsletter and two private, BitTorrent networks focused on cinema, Great Cinema and FilmDestruction, showing there to be diachronic and transplatform similarities between different networks. Rather than instances of rupture and divergence, this project argues that these networks are best understood through an evolutionary lens. It contends that INMSs and other similar formations should be increasingly studied because of their prevalence throughout the 20th and 21st centuries and their importance to consumers as unauthorized media distribution spaces whereby network members have greater latitude to experiment with media and create unique, diverse social structures and practices that are not contingent upon restrictions imposed by the media and copyright industries

    CACIC'09 was the fifteenth Congress in the CACIC series. It was organized by the School of Engineering of the National University of Jujuy. The Congress included 9 Workshops with 130 accepted papers, 1 main Conference, 4 invited tutorials, different meetings related with Computer Science Education (Professors, PhD students, Curricula) and an International School with 5 courses. CACIC 2009 was organized following the traditional Congress format, with 9 Workshops covering a diversity of dimensions of Computer Science Research. Each topic was supervised by a committee of three chairs of different Universities. The call for papers attracted a total of 267 submissions. An average of 2.7 review reports were collected for each paper, for a grand total of 720 review reports that involved about 300 different reviewers.
