    Get PDF
This article is focused on hybrid method for solving the non-smooth cost function economic dispatch problem. The techniques were divided into two parts according to: the incremental cost rates are used to find the initial solution and bee colony optimization is used to find the optimal solution. The constraints of economic dispatch are power losses, load demand and practical operation constraints of generators. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, it is operated by the simulation on the MATLAB program and tests three case studies; three, six and thirteen generator units which compared to particle swarm optimization, cuckoo search algorithm, bat algorithm, firefly algorithm and bee colony optimization. The results show that the proposed algorithm is able to obtain higher quality solution efficiently than the others methods

The essential objective of optimal power flow is to find a stable operating point which minimizes the cost of the production generators and its losses, and keeps the power system acceptable in terms of limits on the active and reactive powers of the generators. In this paper, we propose the nature-inspired Cuckoo search algorithm (CSA) to solve economic/emission dispatch problems with the incorporation of FACTS devices under the valve-point loading effect (VPE). The proposed method is applied on different test systems cases to minimize the fuel cost and total emissions and to see the influence of the integration of FACTS devices. The obtained results confirm the efficiency and the robustness of the Cuckoo search algorithm compared to other optimization techniques published recently in the literature. In addition, the simulation results show the advantages of the proposed algorithm for optimizing the production fuel cost, total emissions and total losses in all transmission lines

The economic dispatch problem of power plays a very important role in the exploitation of electro-energy systems to judiciously distribute power generated by all plants. This paper proposes the use of Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA) for solving the economic and Emission dispatch. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been tested on 3 generator system. CSA is a new meta-heuristic optimization method inspired from the obligate brood parasitism of some cuckoo species by laying their eggs in the nests of other host birds of other species. The results shows that performance of the proposed approach reveal the efficiently and robustness when compared results of other optimization algorithms reported in literatur

FUZZY-BASED REAL-CODED GENETIC ALGORITHM FOR OPTIMIZING NON-CONVEX ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMIC LOSS DISPATCH

    Get PDF
A non-convex Environmental Economic Loss Dispatch (NCEELD) is a constrained multi-objective optimization problem that has been solved for assigning generation cost to all the generators of the power network with equality and inequality constraints. The objectives considered for simultaneous optimization are emission, economic load and network loss dispatch. The valve-point loading, prohibiting operating zones and ramp rate limit issues have also been taken into consideration in the generator fuel cost. The tri-objective problem is transformed into a single objective function via the price penalty factor. The NCEELD problem is simultaneously optimized using a fuzzy-based real-coded genetic algorithm (GA). The proposed technique determines the best solution from a Pareto optimal solution set based on the highest rank. The efficacy of the projected method has been demonstrated on the IEEE 30-bus network with three and six generating units. The attained results are compared to existing results and found superior in terms of finding the best-compromise solution over other existing methods such as GA, particle swarm optimization, flower pollination algorithm, biogeography-based optimization and differential evolution. The statistical analysis has also been carried out for convex multi-objective problem

Modified moth swarm algorithm for optimal economic load dispatch problem

In this study, optimal economic load dispatch problem (OELD) is resolved by a novel improved algorithm. The proposed modified moth swarm algorithm (MMSA), is developed by proposing two modifications on the classical moth swarm algorithm (MSA). The first modification applies an effective formula to replace an ineffective formula of the mutation technique. The second modification is to cancel the crossover technique. For proving the efficient improvements of the proposed method, different systems with discontinuous objective functions as well as complicated constraints are used. Experiment results on the investigated cases show that the proposed method can get less cost and achieve stable search ability than MSA. As compared to other previous methods, MMSA can archive equal or better results. From this view, it can give a conclusion that MMSA method can be valued as a useful method for OELD problem

Antlion optimization algorithm for optimal non-smooth economic load dispatch

This paper presents applications of Antlion optimization algorithm (ALO) for handling optimal economic load dispatch (OELD) problems. Electricity generation cost minimization by controlling power output of all available generating units is a major goal of the problem. ALO is a metaheuristic algorithm based on the hunting process of Antlions. The effect of ALO is investigated by solving a 10-unit system. Each studied case has different objective function and complex level of restraints. Three test cases are employed and arranged according to the complex level in which the first one only considers multi fuel sources while the second case is more complicated by taking valve point loading effects into account. And, the third case is the highest challenge to ALO since the valve effects together with ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zones and spinning reserve constraints are taken into consideration. The comparisons of the result obtained by ALO and other ones indicate the ALO algorithm is more potential than most methods on the solution, the stabilization, and the convergence velocity. Therefore, the ALO method is an effective and promising tool for systems with multi fuel sources and considering complicated constraints

Development of Metaheuristic Algorithm in engineering problems grows really fast. This algorithm is commonly used in optimization problems. One of the metaheuristic algorithms is called Firefly Algorithm (FA). Firefly Algorithm is a nature-inspired algorithm that is derived from the characteristic of fireflies. Firefly Algorithm can be used to solve optimal power flow (OPF) problem in power system. To get the best performance, firefly algorithm can be combined with fuzzy logic. This research presents the application of hybrid fuzzy logic and firefly algorithm to solve optimal power flow. The simulation is done using the MATLAB environment. The simulations show that by using the fuzzy-firefly algorithm, the power losses, as well as the total cost, can be reduced significantly
