PromOTing Healthcare Diversity: a diversity initiative for occupational therapy

    Get PDF
Occupational therapy (OT) is an allied health profession that works with a diverse population, but the ethnic and racial make-up of OT practitioners does not reflect this diversity. The lack of diversity among healthcare providers has been found to exacerbate healthcare disparities in minority communities. Increasing the number of minority OT practitioners helps decrease bias and improve trust and comfort of minority clients improving health outcomes. Minority students have poor awareness of OT as a viable career option and are limited by social, academic, and financial barriers. PromOTing Health Diversity is an evidence-based pipeline and mentorship program designed to help increase minority student enrollment in OT programs by addressing these barriers. PromOTing Healthcare Diversity utilizes a one-day seminar to educate students on OT, the process of becoming an OT, and resources available, and provides students with hands on community-based OT experiences. Students with increased interest in OT can participate in a mentorship program where they will work with minority OT practitioners to grow personally and professionally as they progress towards admission requirements. Participants of PromOTing Healthcare Diversity will share their knowledge of OT with their social network, which will help to increase awareness of OT as a healthcare resource in the minority community. PromOTing Healthcare Diversity helps to increase minority student enrollment into OT programs and increased minority communities’ awareness of the profession

Superstructure Optimization of Petroleum Refinary Design : Processing Alternatives for Vacuum GaS Oil Produced from Distillation Unit

    Get PDF
The objective of this research project is to develop an optimization-based mathematical model in the form of a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) for determining the optimal configuration of a petroleum refinery. The optimization model serves as a decision support system taking into consideration the relevant engineering knowledge and the past design experience. The scope of work of this project focuses on the strategies and approaches for the optimal design of a petroleum refinery configuration for vacuum gas oil processing using mathematical programming in order to select the most economical and cost-efficient process route. The approach involves the development of a superstructure representation in which all feasible processing alternatives and routes for vacuum gas oil are considered. Subsequently, the associated constraints and a suitable cost minimization objective function are formulated to arrive at the optimal solution in terms of the optimal process units to be selected and the corresponding optimal flowrates of the material streams. Linear yield-based material balances are considered in the model constraints by obtaining representative yield values from the literature. Logical constraints in the form of logic cuts for stipulating the selection or no-selection of the process units (tasks) and material streams (states) are included in the optimization model formulation to further define the feasible region of solutions based on the relevant design specifications and the interconnectivity relationships among the nodes of states and tasks in the superstructure. Computational experiments are carried out by implementing the model on GAMS. A numerical example with a hypothetical set of product demands is illustrated, which is solved to optimality using GAMS, resulting in a practically-viable optimal refinery configuration that agrees well with real-world scenari

Google Patents is an eight-year-old virtual searchable database containing the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the European Patent Office (EPO) patents, with US patent applications dating back to 1790. This searchable online archive of invention, novelty and innovation is a valuable tool for designers and researchers. As a point of departure for recent art-based research, Google Patents online database is mined by me as a creative practitioner. As an artist-hacker, the found material used in my research arises from patent searches for fantastical machines and devices developed to assist with swimming, dating from the 1870s to the early twentieth century. The retrieved patent, etched drawings and information evidence an understanding of a new sport at particular moments in time. However, almost all of these patents remained ‘unrealized’, only contained within the drawing and text of the patent itself. These patents are used as the visual and conceptual basis for The Swimming Machine Archive (2014), a growing body of collages featuring fictional devices for moving through water

The University of New Mexico again fielded intercollegiate teams in 13 sports in 197&-77 school year. Two individuals won national championships. One athlete won an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship and seven Lobo athletes were accorded All America status. The total of all varsity athletics at UNM drew 411,906 spectators to home events. The basketball team ranked second in the nation in home attendance. Football attendance increased 18 per cent and season ticket sales for football jumped almost 50 per cent. The Lobo football team generated additional revenue by appearing on an ABC telecast against Brigham Young in Albuquerque in November

Athletics at the University of New Mexico sunk to the lowest of depths in 1979-80, but the turbulent year will also be remembered as the renaissance a rebirth\u27 for the department. Scandal of national magnitude struck the trumpeted Lobo basketball program from all angles. First the NCAA handed down several accusations, followed shortly by an FBI investigation into the altering of player transcripts. Head Coach Norm Ellenberger was terminated and his assistant Manny Goldstein resigned under pressure. Ellenberger is scheduled to go before federal court June 16 on charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and interstate racketeering. UNM attorney Peter Johnstone has compiled an 800-page response to the 92 violations handed down by the NCAA infractions committee and UNM officials are scheduled to meet with the committee in Chicago in July.\u2
