    Wireless Cellular Mobile Communications

    In this article is briefly reviewed the history of wireless cellular mobile communications, examined the progress in current second generation (2G) cellular standards and discussed their migration to the third generation (3G). The European 2G cellular standard GSM and its evolution phases GPRS and EDGE are described somewhat in detail. The third generation standard UMTS taking up on GSM/GPRS core network and equipped with a new advanced access network on the basis of code division multiple access (CDMA) is investigated too. A sketch of the perspective of mobile communication beyond 3G concludes this article

    Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment

    In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors, but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and what remains to be addressed in the future

    Chinese Experience with Global G3 Standard-Setting

    China’s growth strategy as set out in the 11th 5-year plan in 2005 called for upgrading of product quality, the development of an innovation society, and reduced reliance on foreign intellectual property with high license fees. Consistent with this policy, China has been involved in recent years with the development of a Chinese standard in third generation (3G) mobile phone technology, both in negotiating the standard and seeing it through to commercialization. This is the first case of a developing country both originating and successfully negotiating a telecommunications standard and this experience raises issues for China’s future development strategy based on product and process upgrading in manufacturing. We argue that while precedent setting from an international negotiating point of view, the experience has thus far is unproven commercially. But the lessons learned will benefit future related efforts in follow-on technologies if similar Chinese efforts are made.This paper documents Chinese standard-setting efforts from proposal submission to ITU to the current large-scale trial network deployment in China and overseas trial networks deployment. We discuss the underlying objectives for this initiative, evaluate its effectiveness, and assess its broader implications for Chinese development policy.

    Application of the LBS and GIS Integration in Scenic Area

    Development of smart scenic spot has received great attention from individuals and enterprises. This paper focuses on the LBS application in resort management and wants to get an innovation technology applying example in China tourism industry. The LBS can embed in the original GIS platform in OCT east, and then it can provide the added-value service such as promptly catch the visitor location, navigate tour itinerary, schedule scenic transportation shuttle. The new findings in this program is a new system model that integrated GIS and LBS has been put to use, therefore, a LBS service network covering the whole OCT East area can be developed.     Performance evaluation of mobile relays in CDMA system

    In this thesis we consider the uplink direction of DS-CDMA (Direct Sequence, Code Division Multiple Access) network with multihop transmission. For the purpose, we discussed simple conditions by which we can understand whether single hop or multihop is better. One promising direction that the current wireless network moves toward is multihopping that allows mobiles to relay packets of other mobiles to their destinations. A major reason for adopting such multihopping is in capacity and range enhancement, which may pay off its increased complexity. Here, we focus on the non-real-time (NRT) services in the uplink of a DS-CDMA cell. Mobiles are moving around the cell, trying to send NRT packets to the base station, possibly by multihopping. Our goal is to derive a per-hop based multihop scheduling algorithm that is easily applicable in a cellular network with high mobility. For the purpose, we utilize the similarity between the basketball game and our multihop uplink packet scheduling problem. By regarding players, the basket and the ball as mobiles, the base station and data packet, respectively, we can mimic passing (multihopping) patterns of the basketball players. A major difference between the two is that in the multihopping problem, there are many packets (balls) while in the basket ball game, there is only one ball to shoot into the basket
