    Rapid Digital Architecture Design of Computationally Complex Algorithms

    Traditional digital design techniques hardly keep up with the rising abundance of programmable circuitry found on recent Field-Programmable Gate Arrays. Therefore, the novel Rapid Data Type-Agnostic Digital Design Methodology (RDAM) elevates the design perspective of digital design engineers away from the register-transfer level to the algorithmic level. It is founded on the capabilities of High-Level Synthesis tools. By consequently working with data type-agnostic source codes, the RDAM brings significant simplifications to the fixed-point conversion of algorithms and the design of complex-valued architectures. Signal processing applications from the field of Compressed Sensing illustrate the efficacy of the RDAM in the context of multi-user wireless communications.     Signal processing architectures for automotive high-resolution MIMO radar systems

    To date, the digital signal processing for an automotive radar sensor has been handled in an efficient way by general purpose signal processors and microcontrollers. However, increasing resolution requirements for automated driving on the one hand, as well as rapidly growing numbers of manufactured sensors on the other hand, can provoke a paradigm change in the near future. The design and development of highly specialized hardware accelerators could become a viable option - at least for the most demanding processing steps with data rates of several gigabits per second. In this work, application-specific signal processing architectures for future high-resolution multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar sensors are designed, implemented, investigated and optimized. A focus is set on real-time performance such that even sophisticated algorithms can be computed sufficiently fast. The full processing chain from the received baseband signals to a list of detections is considered, comprising three major steps: Spectrum analysis, target detection and direction of arrival estimation. The developed architectures are further implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and important measurements like resource consumption, power dissipation or data throughput are evaluated and compared with other examples from literature. A substantial dataset, based on more than 3600 different parametrizations and variants, has been established with the help of a model-based design space exploration and is provided as part of this work. Finally, an experimental radar sensor has been built and is used under real-world conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed signal processing architectures.Bisher wurde die digitale Signalverarbeitung fĂŒr automobile Radarsensoren auf eine effiziente Art und Weise von universell verwendbaren Mikroprozessoren bewĂ€ltigt. Jedoch können steigende Anforderungen an das Auflösungsvermögen fĂŒr hochautomatisiertes Fahren einerseits, sowie schnell wachsende StĂŒckzahlen produzierter Sensoren andererseits, einen Paradigmenwechsel in naher Zukunft bewirken. Die Entwicklung von hochgradig spezialisierten Hardwarebeschleunigern könnte sich als eine praktikable Alternative etablieren - zumindest fĂŒr die anspruchsvollsten Rechenschritte mit Datenraten von mehreren Gigabits pro Sekunde. In dieser Arbeit werden anwendungsspezifische Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen fĂŒr zukĂŒnftige, hochauflösende, MIMO Radarsensoren entworfen, realisiert, untersucht und optimiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei stets auf der EchtzeitfĂ€higkeit, sodass selbst anspruchsvolle Algorithmen in einer ausreichend kurzen Zeit berechnet werden können. Die komplette Signalverarbeitungskette, beginnend von den empfangenen Signalen im Basisband bis hin zu einer Liste von Detektion, wird in dieser Arbeit behandelt. Die Kette gliedert sich im Wesentlichen in drei grĂ¶ĂŸere Teilschritte: Spektralanalyse, Zieldetektion und WinkelschĂ€tzung. Des Weiteren werden die entwickelten Architekturen auf einem FPGA implementiert und wichtige Kennzahlen wie Ressourcenverbrauch, Stromverbrauch oder Datendurchsatz ausgewertet und mit anderen Beispielen aus der Literatur verglichen. Ein umfangreicher Datensatz, welcher mehr als 3600 verschiedene Parametrisierungen und Varianten beinhaltet, wurde mit Hilfe einer modellbasierten Entwurfsraumexploration erstellt und ist in dieser Arbeit enthalten. Schließlich wurde ein experimenteller Radarsensor aufgebaut und dazu benutzt, die entworfenen Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen unter realen Umgebungsbedingungen zu verifizieren

    Energy Efficient VLSI Circuits for MIMO-WLAN

    Mobile communication - anytime, anywhere access to data and communication services - has been continuously increasing since the operation of the first wireless communication link by Guglielmo Marconi. The demand for higher data rates, despite the limited bandwidth, led to the development of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication which is often combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Together, these two techniques achieve a high bandwidth efficiency. Unfortunately, techniques such as MIMO-OFDM significantly increase the signal processing complexity of transceivers. While fast improvements in the integrated circuit (IC) technology enabled to implement more signal processing complexity per chip, large efforts had and have to be done for novel algorithms as well as for efficient very large scaled integration (VLSI) architectures in order to meet today's and tomorrow's requirements for mobile wireless communication systems. In this thesis, we will present architectures and VLSI implementations of complete physical (PHY) layer application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) under the constraints imposed by an industrial wireless communication standard. Contrary to many other publications, we do not elaborate individual components of a MIMO-OFDM communication system stand-alone, but in the context of the complete PHY layer ASIC. We will investigate the performance of several MIMO detectors and the corresponding preprocessing circuits, being integrated into the entire PHY layer ASIC, in terms of achievable error-rate, power consumption, and area requirement. Finally, we will assemble the results from the proposed PHY layer implementations in order to enhance the energy efficiency of a transceiver.     Energy efficient design of an adaptive switching algorithm for the iterative-MIMO receiver

    An efficient design dedicated for iterative-multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver systems is now imperative in our world since data demands are increasing tremendously in wireless networks. This puts a massive burden on the signal processing power especially in small receiver systems where power sources are often shared or limited. This thesis proposes an attractive solution to both the wireless signal processing and the architectural implementation design sides of the problem. A novel algorithm, dubbed the Adaptive Switching Algorithm, is proven to not only save more than a third of the energy consumption in the algorithmic design, but is also able to achieve an energy reduction of more than 50% in terms of processing power when the design is mapped onto state-of-the-art programmable hardware. Simulations are based in MatlabTM using the Monte Carlo approach, where multiple additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels for both fast and slow fading environments were investigated. The software selects the appropriate detection algorithm depending on the current channel conditions. The design for the hardware is based on the latest field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) hardware from Xilinx R , specifically the Virtex-5 and Virtex-7 chipsets. They were chosen during the experimental phase to verify the results in order to examine trends for energy consumption in the proposed algorithm design. Savings come from dynamic allocation of the hardware resources by implementing power minimization techniques depending on the processing requirements of the system. Having demonstrated the feasibility of the algorithm in controlled environments, realistic channel conditions were simulated using spatially correlated MIMO channels to test the algorithm’s readiness for real-world deployment. The proposed algorithm is placed in both the MIMO detector and the iterative-decoder blocks of the receiver. When the final full receiver design setup is implemented, it shows that the key to energy saving lies in the fact that both software and hardware components of the Adaptive Switching Algorithm adopt adaptivity in the respective designs. The detector saves energy by selecting suitable detection schemes while the decoder provides adaptivity by limiting the number of decoding iterations, both of which are updated in real-time. The overall receiver can achieve more than 70% energy savings in comparison to state-of-the-art iterative-MIMO receivers and thus it can be concluded that this level of ‘intelligence’ is an important direction towards a more efficient iterative-MIMO receiver designs in the future

    The European research project DESERVE (DEvelopment platform for Safe and Efficient dRiVE, 2012-2015) had the aim of designing and developing a platform tool to cope with the continuously increasing complexity and the simultaneous need to reduce cost for future embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For this purpose, the DESERVE platform profits from cross-domain software reuse, standardization of automotive software component interfaces, and easy but safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules. This enables the development of a new generation of ADAS applications, which challengingly combine different functions, sensors, actuators, hardware platforms, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This book presents the different results of the DESERVE project concerning the ADAS development platform, test case functions, and validation and evaluation of different approaches. The reader is invited to substantiate the content of this book with the deliverables published during the DESERVE project.     Der Workshop Methoden und Beschreibungssprachen zur Modellierung und Verifikation von Schaltungen und Systemen (MBMV 2015) findet nun schon zum 18. mal statt. Ausrichter sind in diesem Jahr die Professur Schaltkreis- und Systementwurf der Technischen UniversitĂ€t Chemnitz und das Steinbeis-Forschungszentrum Systementwurf und Test. Der Workshop hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, neueste Trends, Ergebnisse und aktuelle Probleme auf dem Gebiet der Methoden zur Modellierung und Verifikation sowie der Beschreibungssprachen digitaler, analoger und Mixed-Signal-Schaltungen zu diskutieren. Er soll somit ein Forum zum Ideenaustausch sein. Weiterhin bietet der Workshop eine Plattform fĂŒr den Austausch zwischen Forschung und Industrie sowie zur Pflege bestehender und zur KnĂŒpfung neuer Kontakte. Jungen Wissenschaftlern erlaubt er, ihre Ideen und AnsĂ€tze einem breiten Publikum aus Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft zu prĂ€sentieren und im Rahmen der Veranstaltung auch fundiert zu diskutieren. Sein langjĂ€hriges Bestehen hat ihn zu einer festen GrĂ¶ĂŸe in vielen Veranstaltungskalendern gemacht. Traditionell sind auch die Treffen der ITGFachgruppen an den Workshop angegliedert.
