New Methods, Current Trends and Software Infrastructure for NLP

The increasing use of `new methods' in NLP, which the NeMLaP conference series exemplifies, occurs in the context of a wider shift in the nature and concerns of the discipline. This paper begins with a short review of this context and significant trends in the field. The review motivates and leads to a set of requirements for support software of general utility for NLP research and development workers. A freely-available system designed to meet these requirements is described (called GATE - a General Architecture for Text Engineering). Information Extraction (IE), in the sense defined by the Message Understanding Conferences (ARPA \cite{Arp95}), is an NLP application in which many of the new methods have found a home (Hobbs \cite{Hob93}; Jacobs ed. \cite{Jac92}). An IE system based on GATE is also available for research purposes, and this is described. Lastly we review related work.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, uses nemlap.sty (included

    Get PDF
Design of learning applications that use Development Methods (Research and Development/R&D) using a commonly used system development methodology, namely SDLC (System Development Life Cycle). Several stages of SDLC consist of planning, analysis, design, implementation to system maintenance. The SDLC concept is the basis of various types of software development models to form a framework in planning and controlling information systems. The SDLC model that is often used in research and development (R&D) research for the development of Android -based learning applications is a waterfall and prototyping model. The comparison of the two models states that the waterfall model is more suitable for a system or software that is generic or in the form of software that can provide services to the buyer. While prototyping is more suitable for customize systems or software, meaning software made based on demand and needs (even certain situations and conditions). In accordance with the analysis obtained, the two methods have the advantages and disadvantages of each, so that the developer can choose which method is more suitable for the development of the software

SPAR is a system of programs used for finite element structural analysis developed for NASA by Engineering Information Systems, Inc. It includes many complementary structural analysis and utility functions which communicate through a common database. The work on NICE/SPAR was motivated by requirements for a highly modular and flexible structural analysis system to use as a tool in carrying out research in computational methods and exploring new computer hardware. Analysis examples are presented which demonstrate the benefits gained from a combination of the NICE command language with the SPAR computational modules

A Neural Network Method for Land Use Change Classification, with Application to the Nile River Delta

Detecting and monitoring changes in conditions at the Earth's surface are essential for understanding human impact on the environment and for assessing the sustainability of development. In the next decade, NASA will gather high-resolution multi-spectral and multi-temporal data, which could be used for analyzing long-term changes, provided that available methods can keep pace with the accelerating flow of information. This paper introduces an automated technique for change identification, based on the ARTMAP neural network. This system overcomes some of the limitations of traditional change detection methods, and also produces a measure of confidence in classification accuracy. Landsat thematic mapper (TM) imagery of the Nile River delta provides a testbed for land use change classification methods. This dataset consists of a sequence of ten images acquired between 1984 and 1993 at various times of year. Field observations and photo interpretations have identified 358 sites as belonging to eight classes, three of which represent changes in land use over the ten-year period. Aparticular challenge posed by this database is the unequal representation of various land use categories: three classes, urban, agriculture in delta, and other, comprise 95% of pixels in labeled sites. A two-step sampling method enables unbiased training of the neural network system across sites.National Science Foundation (SBR 95-13889); Office of Naval Research (N00014-95-1-409, N00014-95-0657); Air Force Office of Scientific Research (F49620-01-1-0397, F49620-01-1-042

Public services are things that the government must provide to its citizens. The availability of technological devices that support village services is available. It can be used, but in realizing its activities so far, many villages still need to be more optimal in providing services because they still need to use conventional methods. This research was conducted in Cihuni Village, located in Banten Province, with an area of ± 571.20ha. As of 2020, Cihuni Village is known to have a population of 7,111 people. With such a large population, conventional service methods cannot run optimally. Therefore, an information system is needed to assist village officials in managing the administration of their residents. The Village Administration Information System was designed using the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) method using the Rapid Application Development (RAD) model. The process carried out in this study begins with the Requirements Planning, User Design, Construction, and Cut Over stages according to the RAD model. At the design stage, the Bootstrap Framework is used as the front end, and the Laravel Framework is used as the back end for the web-based Village Administration Information System. The results of testing with test cases using the User Acceptance Test (UAT) method obtained results that were following the needs of Cihuni village.Public administration services are things that the government must provide to its citizens. Get PDF
In southern Mexico, local communities have been playing important roles in the design and collection of wildlife data through camera-trapping in community-based monitoring of biodiversity projects. However, the methods used to store the data have limited their use in matters of decision-making and research. Thus, we present the Platform for Community-based Monitoring of Biodiversity (PCMB), a repository, which allows storage, visualization, and downloading of photographs captured by community-based monitoring of biodiversity projects in protected areas of southern Mexico. The platform was developed using agile software development with extensive interaction between computer scientists and biologists. System development included gathering data, design, built, database and attributes creation, and quality control. The PCMB currently contains 28,180 images of 6478 animals (69.4% mammals and 30.3% birds). Of the 32 species of mammals recorded in 18 PA since 2012, approximately a quarter of all photographs were of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Platforms permitting access to camera-trapping data are a valuable step in opening access to data of biodiversity; the PCMB is a practical new tool for wildlife management and research with data generated through local participation. Thus, this work encourages research on the data generated through the community-based monitoring of biodiversity projects in protected areas, to provide an important information infrastructure for effective management and conservation of wildlife

A Review of Problem Structuring Methods for Consideration in Prognostics and Smart Manufacturing

    Get PDF
Successful use of prognostics involves the prediction of future system behaviors in an effort to maintain system availability and reduce the cost of maintenance and repairs. Recent work by the National Institute of Standards and Technology indicates that the field of prognostics and health management is vital for remaining competitive in today’s manufacturing environment. While prognostics-based maintenance involves many traditional operations research-centric challenges for successful deployment such as limited availability of information and concerns regarding computational efficiency, the authors argue in this paper that the field of prognostics and health management, still in its embryonic development stage, could benefit greatly from considering soft operations research techniques as well. Specifically, the authors propose the use of qualitative problem structuring techniques that aid in problem understanding and scoping. This paper provides an overview of these soft methods and discusses and demonstrates how manufacturers might use them. An approach combining problem structuring methods with traditional operations research techniques would help accelerate the development of the prognostics field
