    Use Of Electronic Anatomy Practical Examinations For Remediating “At Risk” Students

    Restrictive laboratory scheduling, an increasing number of human cadaver-based anatomy courses and a reduction in the curricular time allotted to anatomy courses have created problems with cadaver laboratory access at the University of New England. This article describes a combination of anatomy testing and grading strategies to allow “at risk” (borderline failing) students an opportunity to remediate their lowest set of examination scores and pass their anatomy course. An alternative electronic practical examination for these students provided flexibility in laboratory scheduling, thereby increasing laboratory access for other students taking concurrent courses. Specifically, the electronic examinations allowed for a reduction in the amount of time the cadaver laboratory is locked down for examination purposes. Masters-level occupational therapy (MOT) students, physician assistant students (MPA), and doctoral level physical therapy (DPT) students participated in a prosection-based human cadaver laboratory and take cadaver-based practical examinations as part of their anatomy course. Students who were not performing at a passing level for their curriculum (69.5% for MOT and MPA, 79.5% for DPT) were given an opportunity to remediate their lowest set of multiple choice and practical examinations using the previous year\u27s multiple choice examination and a new electronic practical examination. When the original cadaver-based practical and multiple choice examination scores were replaced with the remedial electronic practical examination and remedial multiple choice examination scores, 75% (24/32) of these students were able to successfully remediate their academic deficiencies and pass their anatomy course

    Examination timetabling at the University of Cape Town: a tabu search approach to automation

    With the rise of schedules and scheduling problems, solutions proposed in literature have expanded yet the disconnect between research and reality remains. The University of Cape Town's (UCT) Examinations Office currently produces their schedules manually with software relegated to error-checking status. While they have requested automation, this study is the first attempt to integrate optimisation techniques into the examination timetabling process. Tabu search and Nelder-Mead methodologies were tested on the UCT November 2014 examination timetabling data with tabu search proving to be more effective, capable of producing feasible solutions from randomised initial solutions. To make this research more accessible, a user-friendly app was developed which showcased the optimisation techniques in a more digestible format. The app includes data cleaning specific to UCT's data management system and was presented to the UCT Examinations Office where they expressed support for further development: in its current form, the app would be used as a secondary tool after an initial solution has been manually obtained

    Operational Research (OR) techniques have been applied, from the early stages of the discipline, to a wide variety of issues in education. At the government level, these include questions of what resources should be allocated to education as a whole and how these should be divided amongst the individual sectors of education and the institutions within the sectors. Another pertinent issue concerns the efficient operation of institutions, how to measure it, and whether resource allocation can be used to incentivise efficiency savings. Local governments, as well as being concerned with issues of resource allocation, may also need to make decisions regarding, for example, the creation and location of new institutions or closure of existing ones, as well as the day-to-day logistics of getting pupils to schools. Issues of concern for managers within schools and colleges include allocating the budgets, scheduling lessons and the assignment of students to courses. This survey provides an overview of the diverse problems faced by government, managers and consumers of education, and the OR techniques which have typically been applied in an effort to improve operations and provide solutions

    An application of a cocitation-analysis method to find further research possibilities on the area of scheduling problems

    In this article we will give firstly a classification scheme of scheduling problems and their solving methods. The main aspects under examination are the following: machine and secondary resources, constraints, objective functions, uncertainty, mathematical models and adapted solution methods. In a second part, based on this scheme, we will examine a corpus of 60 main articles (1015 citation links were recorded in total) in scheduling literature from 1977 to 2009. The main purpose is to discover the underlying themes within the literature and to examine how they have evolved. To identify documents likely to be closely related, we are going to use the cocitation-based method of Greene et al. (2008). Our aim is to build a base of articles in order to extract the much developed research themes and find the less examined ones as well, and then try to discuss the reasons of the poorly investigation of some areas

    An XML format for benchmarks in High School Timetabling

    The High School Timetabling Problem is amongst the most widely used timetabling problems. This problem has varying structures in different high schools even within the same country or educational system. Due to lack of standard benchmarks and data formats this problem has been studied less than other timetabling problems in the literature. In this paper we describe the High School Timetabling Problem in several countries in order to find a common set of constraints and objectives. Our main goal is to provide exchangeable benchmarks for this problem. To achieve this we propose a standard data format suitable for different countries and educational systems, defined by an XML schema. The schema and datasets are available online

    Optimizing a Law School’s Course Schedule

    [Excerpt] “Just like other educational institutions, law schools must schedule courses by taking into consideration student needs, faculty resources, and logistical support such as classroom size and equipment needs. Course scheduling is an administrative function, typically handled by an Assistant Dean or an Associate Dean, who works with the faculty and the registrar to balance these considerations in advance of the registration process. Usually, the entire academic year is scheduled in advance, although the spring semester may be labeled tentative until registration begins for that semester. It’s hard to imagine, but some schools even publish a two-year schedule of upper-division courses so that students can plan their entire law school career in advance. In order to give assistance to those academics involved for the first time in the scheduling process, this article discusses the law school scheduling process and how a scheduling software package has worked to successfully automate what has been seen as one of the most abysmal administrative tasks of an Associate Dean. We first provide a background to course scheduling at a typical law school. We then present a review of the tools for, and literature on, course scheduling, followed by a discussion of how technology can be applied to course scheduling in general, and our outcomes of applying this technology in a law school environment. We close with a brief summary.
