    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to design a metadata application profile to organize content objects of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences libraries based on analytical-systematic approach. The population under study included content objects from 23 libraries (central, hospital and college libraries). A researcher-made questionnaire was used to collect data related to the local features and needs of generating metadata records in libraries. Some questions of the questionnaire were answered by the librarians of the organizing department, and some of them were completed by researcher’s observation of the libraries’ metadata databases. The native needs and intend of libraries in terms of content objects organizing were determined and an application profile was designed for describing and organizing different types of content objects based on them. The application profile contains 63 elements, 22 of which are mandatory elements and the other elements are optional. Among those 63 elements, 54, 7 and 2 elements have been selected from the UNIMARC as the basic standard, the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) and the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), respectively. Finally, the structure and semantics syntax of the designed metadata application profile based on the local context of the libraries were determined

Collaborating communities : the RDA experience and its implications for common information environments

    Get PDF
This paper is presented as a case study which describes the interactions between several communities with a common interest in developing standards related to bibliographic information retrieval. Such interactions have mainly taken the form of a meeting followed by a programme of substantive work mutually agreed and carried out as a collaborative venture between technical representatives of those communities. The case study is therefore presented in the chronological order of those meetings

The article gives an overview of important metadata schemes for librarianship. It presents RDF formal model for metadata exchange, and also outlines the OpenURL standard for easier identification, access and control of electronic resources through the technology of exchanging metadata via URL. The use of metadata contributes to a better regulated web and information space. It is intended for automatic retrieval and information management which should definitely be the field of study in the modern librarianship and information science. The authors also define the PHP code with the OpenURL function and recommend its implementation into the online publications with the purpose of creating the COinS objects, and linking information sources on the Internet

The Spanish National Library (Biblioteca Nacional de España1. BNE) and the Ontology Engineering Group2 of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid are working on the joint project ?Preliminary Study of Linked Data?, whose aim is to enrich the Web of Data with the BNE authority and bibliographic records. To this end, they are transforming the BNE information to RDF following the Linked Data principles3 proposed by Tim Berners Lee

    ISSN: Transitioning to linked data

International audienceISSN numbers reliably identify all types of continuing resources worldwide: in 2007, the scope of the standard, originally limited to serials, was extended so as to also include ongoing integrating resources. Bibliographic records describing resources identified by an ISSN are produced by ISSN national centres – there are also in charge of their updates. ISSN records are regularly sent to the ISSN Register, a bibliographic database which currently contains more than 1.9 million records. The Register is maintained by the ISSN International Centre, which is also in charge of providing access to its bibliographic information through innovative tools and services. The ISSN International Centre sees linked data principles and tools as a prominent way to distribute information from its own Register; and more generally bibliographic information about continuing resources. It seeks also to harness the tremendous opportunities of re-using data from other organizations, belonging or not to the library world, in order to enhance its knowledge on its own data, and to propose better services. The ISSN International Centre has therefore launched several projects related to that domain. On one hand, it has participated to the development of PRESS OO , an extension of the FRBR OO ontology for continuing resources. On the other hand, it has launched ROAD, the Registry of Open Access Resources, which disseminates bibliographic information on open access publications in the web of data. These two experiments have helped the ISSN International Centre to start setting up its linked data policy – or policies: various data models will be designed to fit the needs of the different users; different services and tools will be provided to free users and to customers of the ISSN Portal

Microsoft
