Independence in computable algebra
We give a sufficient condition for an algebraic structure to have a
computable presentation with a computable basis and a computable presentation
with no computable basis. We apply the condition to differentially closed, real
closed, and difference closed fields with the relevant notions of independence.
To cover these classes of structures we introduce a new technique of safe
extensions that was not necessary for the previously known results of this
kind. We will then apply our techniques to derive new corollaries on the number
of computable presentations of these structures. The condition also implies
classical and new results on vector spaces, algebraically closed fields,
torsion-free abelian groups and Archimedean ordered abelian groups.Comment: 24 page
Algorithms in algebraic number theory
In this paper we discuss the basic problems of algorithmic algebraic number
theory. The emphasis is on aspects that are of interest from a purely
mathematical point of view, and practical issues are largely disregarded. We
describe what has been done and, more importantly, what remains to be done in
the area. We hope to show that the study of algorithms not only increases our
understanding of algebraic number fields but also stimulates our curiosity
about them. The discussion is concentrated of three topics: the determination
of Galois groups, the determination of the ring of integers of an algebraic
number field, and the computation of the group of units and the class group of
that ring of integers.Comment: 34 page
Non-Archimedean Models of Morphogenesis
We study a p-adic reaction-diffusion system and the associated Turing
patterns. We establish an instability criteria and show that the Turing
patterns are not classical patterns consisting of alternating domains. Instead
of this, a Turing pattern consists of several domains (clusters), each of them
supporting a different pattern but with the same parameter values. This type of
patterns are typically produced by reaction-diffusion equations on large
networks
