    Actuators for a space manipulator

    The robotic manipulator can be decomposed into distinct subsytems. One particular area of interest of mechanical subsystems is electromechanical actuators (or drives). A drive is defined as a motor with an appropriate transmission. An overview is given of existing, as well as state-of-the-art drive systems. The scope is limited to space applications. A design philosophy and adequate requirements are the initial steps in designing a space-qualified actuator. The focus is on the d-c motor in conjunction with several types of transmissions (harmonic, tendon, traction, and gear systems). The various transmissions will be evaluated and key performance parameters will be addressed in detail. Included in the assessment is a shuttle RMS joint and a MSFC drive of the Prototype Manipulator Arm. Compound joints are also investigated. Space imposes a set of requirements for designing a high-performance drive assembly. Its inaccessibility and cryogenic conditions warrant special considerations. Some guidelines concerning these conditions are present. The goal is to gain a better understanding in designing a space actuator

    Vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines

    A vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines without reluctance and saturation effects is described. We prove the equivalence of such a machine with a set of magnetically independent machines, which are electrically and mechanically coupled. Specific problems of polyphase machines can thus be favorably analyzed with this concept. Rules of conception and constraints on electric supply can be deduced. Moreover the vectorial approach, which generalizes the complex phasor method, can also be used to control n-leg Voltage Source Inverters. This methodology is applied to 3-phase and 6- phase synchronous machines

    Performance Analysis of Hybrid and Full Electrical Vehicles Equipped with Continuously Variable Transmissions

    The main aim of this paper is to study the potential impacts in hybrid and full electrical vehicles performance by utilising continuously variable transmissions. This is achieved by two stages. First, for Electrical Vehicles (EVs), modelling and analysing the powertrain of a generic electric vehicle is developed using Matlab/Simulink-QSS Toolkit, with and without a transmission system of varying levels of complexity. Predicted results are compared for a typical electrical vehicle in three cases: without a gearbox, with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and with a conventional stepped gearbox. Second, for Hybrid Electrical Vehicles (HEVs), a twin epicyclic power split transmission model is used. Computer programmes for the analysis of epicyclic transmission based on a matrix method are developed and used. Two vehicle models are built-up; namely: traditional ICE vehicle, and HEV with a twin epicyclic gearbox. Predictions for both stages are made over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).The simulations show that the twin epicyclic offers substantial improvements of reduction in energy consumption in HEVs. The results also show that it is possible to improve overall performance and energy consumption levels using a continuously variable ratio gearbox in EVs

    Rotorcraft research testing in the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex at NASA Ames Research Center

    The unique capabilities of the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) for testing rotorcraft systems are described. The test facilities include the 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel, the 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel, and the Outdoor Aerodynamic Research Facility. The Ames 7- by 10-Foot Subsonic Wind Tunnel is also used in support of the rotor research programs conducted in the NFAC. Detailed descriptions of each of the facilities, with an emphasis on helicopter rotor test capability, are presented. The special purpose rotor test equipment used in conducting helicopter research is reviewed. Test rigs to operate full-scale helicopter main rotors, helicopter tail rotors, and tilting prop-rotors are available, as well as full-scale and small-scale rotor systems for use in various research programs. The test procedures used in conducting rotor experiments are discussed together with representative data obtained from previous test programs. Specific examples are given for rotor performance, loads, acoustics, system interactions, dynamic and aeroelastic stability, and advanced technology and prototype demonstration models

The MOD-OA was designed and built to obtain operation and performance data and experience in utility environments. The project requirements, approach, system description, design requirements, design, analysis, system tests, installation, safety considerations, failure modes and effects analysis, data acquisition, and initial performance for the wind turbine are discussed. The design and analysis of the rotor, drive train, nacelle equipment, yaw drive mechanism and brake, tower, foundation, electricl system, and control systems are presented.     Improved efficiency with adaptive front and rear axle independently driven powertrain and disconnect functionality

    Front and rear axle independently driven (FRID) powertrains are becoming a popular solution for electric vehicles (EVs) due to torque distribution capability which can enhance powertrain energy efficiency. Typically, permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are used for FRID powertrains due to their high torque, and power density. However, the drive-cycle efficiency of FRID powertrains with PMSMs is typically reduced in comparison to single motor drives. This is due to the unwanted no-load losses of PMSMs in the field weakening region. To overcome this drawback of PMSM FRIDs, this paper proposes an adaptive front- and rear-axle independently driven (AFRID) powertrain, utilizing two dog clutches, so that the powertrain can be operated in different modes (rear, front, and all-wheel drive) by adaptively connecting and disconnecting the front and/or rear electric drive unit (EDU). A rule-based mode selection strategy is developed to utilize the flexibility of different powertrain operating modes of the powertrain for maximizing the energy efficiency of the EDU. The simulation results show that the suggested AFRID powertrain, in comparison to a common FRID powertrain, can improve the WLTC drive-cycle consumption from 22.17 kWhh to 20.50 kWhh per 100 km. Based on the route and road-load information, the energy-saving potential of the AFRID powertrain can be further improved to 20.37 kWhh per 100 km by a suggested predictive mode selection strategy, achieving an optimal mode selection

    Modeling And Analysis Of Multi–Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines: Direct–Drive Electric Vehicle Application

    In commercially existing electric vehicles (EVs), power is transferred from the motor to the wheels through a fixed gear mechanical transmission system. However, such a transmission system contributes to a power loss between 2% to 20% of output power of the motor depending on the operating speed and torque of the motor. Therefore, by removing the transmission, a direct–drive EV configuration is obtained with lower component count, improved motor to wheel efficiency and frequency dependent losses. However, challenges in developing a single on–board permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) for such a configuration include high torque density, low torque ripple and high torque per permanent magnet (PM) volume. Therefore, this dissertation proposes a novel PMSM addressing the aforementioned challenges for a direct–drive application. Initially, the design targets, stator and rotor configuration and phase numbers of the PMSM are chosen to satisfy the requirements of a direct drive application. A novel torque and torque ripple model based on multiple reference frames is proposed, in which the torque ripple from spatial harmonics of flux, inductances and the time harmonics of stator currents are included. Using the analytical model, optimal slot–pole combination of the machine is selected based on adaptive gradient descent algorithm. A new consequent pole rotor topology is proposed to improve the torque density and torque per PM volume thereby reducing the usage of expensive rare earth magnets. The proposed PMSM with novel rotor is further improved in terms of torque density, losses and cost by performing an intensive structural optimization based on novel hybrid analytical model, finite element analysis and supervised learning. The optimized PMSM is then analyzed for various drive cycles and performance in terms of torque, speed and efficiency are discussed. A scaled–down prototype of the proposed PMSM is developed and comprehensive experimental analysis in terms of torque ripple, torque–speed characteristics and efficiency are performed under different speeds and load conditions and are compared with the results obtained from proposed analytical model

    Kesediaan pelajar dari aspek kemahiran teknikal terhadap pembentukan kebolehkerjaan di Kolej Vokasional Wilayah Selatan

    Graduan yang menganggur terus menjadi masalah yang semakin meruncing di Malaysia. Terdapat majikan yang menganggap kompetensi akademik sahaja tidak mencukupi dan mula meminta institusi pendidikan tinggi untuk menghasilkan graduan yang dilengkapi dengan kemahiran teknikal. Kajian ini merupakan satu kajian untuk mengenalpasti kesediaan pelajar dari aspek kemahiran teknikal terhadap pembentukan kebolehkerjaan di kolej vokasional wilayah selatan. Seramai 113 responden telah dipilih sebagai sampel kajian. Instrumen kajian yang digunakan dalam kajian ini ialah borang soal selidik yang mengandungi 60 item. Kajian rintis dijalankan untuk mendapatkan nilai alpha bagi instrument kajian di mana nilai alpha bagi aspek kemahiran teknikal adalah α = 0.962 dan bagi aspek kebolehkerjaan adalah α = 0.954 . Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan menggunakan Statistical Package for Social Science Version 20 (SPSS 20). Analisis deskriptif dalam bentuk skor min digunakan untuk melihat kesediaan pelajar. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa tahap kesediaan pelajar dari aspek kemahiran teknikal terhadap pembentukan kebolehkerjaan di Kolej Vokasional Kluang, Kolej Vokasional Batu Pahat dan Kolej Vokasional Muar berada pada tahap tinggi. Hasil kajian juga menunjukkan terdapat perbezaan antara jantina pelajar dari aspek kemahiran teknikal yang mempengaruhi kesediaan pelajar terhadap pembentukan kebolehkerjaa
