Sediment characterization of North Atlantic systems, New England
The estuarine systems selected are from the NOAA National Estuarine Inventory in the North Atlantic region (Figure 1). The principal spatial unit of each system is the estuarine drainage area (EDA) defined in the NEI data atlas (U.S. NOAA, 1985). The sediment distributions embrace the estuarine bottom area, i.e. from the head of tides to the mouth where the estuary meets the ocean, bay or sound as determined by physiographic features (U.S. NOAA, 1985). Data coverage embraces whole estuaries and far-field distributions. Chart scales are smaller than 1:80,000 and chart units larger than 0.06 square kilometer

The sediment and contaminant distributions embrace the estuarine bottom area, i.e. from the head of tides to the mouth where the estuary meets the ocean, bay or sound as determined by physiographic features (U.S. NOAA, 1985). Data coverage embraces whole estuaries and farfield distributions. Chart scales are smaller than 1:80,000 and the minimum mappable unit is 1.0 km2 or larger except in the Hudson and Raritan Bay where 0.25 km2 was used
The Orphan as Mirror: Postmodern Alienation and Societal Crisis in Japanese Film
This paper discusses the cultural significance of orphans in the post-modern media, using as a case study two Japanese films: Grave of the Fireflies and Nobody Knows. Through comparing the films and examining their approach to the orphan storytelling this paper attempts to gain insight into post-modern Japanese attitudes about social issues. By analyzing the appeal of the films to Japanese and international audiences, it also attempts to explain their popularity by drawing parallels between the main characters of each motion picture and the average postmodern citizen
Determinants of the Acquisition of Smaller Firms by Larger Incumbents in High-Tech Industries: Are they related to Innovation and Technology Sourcing?
Innovation activities in high tech industries provide considerable challenges for technology and innovation management. In particular, firms frequently face significant technological challenges since these industries has a long history of radical innovations which are taking place through distinct industry cycles of higher and lower demand. The paper investigates these issues for three high-tech industries, namely semiconductor manufacturing, biotechnology and electronic design automation which is a specific sub-segment of the semiconductor industry. It analyses the association of firm characteristics with different aspects of acquisition behaviour. Particular focus is put on innovation-related firm characteristics. The paper finds that the determinants for acquisitions are mostly related to firm size, financial conditions and geographical origin of the firm. Only for biotechnology, a substitutive relationship is identified between acquisitions and own research activities.acquisition, innovation, semiconductor, design, automation, biotechnology

The paper investigates this behaviour for three high technology industries, namely semiconductor manufacturing, biotechnology and electronic design automation which is a specific sub-segment of the semiconductor industry. It analyses the association of firm characteristics with different aspects of acquisition behaviour with a particular focus being put on innovation-related firm characteristics. The paper confirms a substitutive relationship between acquisitions and own research activities as well as between own and acquired firm patenting, but also finds that firm size, financial conditions and geographical origin of the firm matter for acquisition behaviour.Acquisition, innovation, high technology, quantitative methods, research, R&D
