    The stereotypic portrayal of women in slasher films: then versus now

    ABSTRACT In entertainment, the media often portray various social groups, including women, in certain negative ways and as having more negative qualities than other traditional social groups, such as white males. These portrayals provide viewers with ways of thinking about and acting towards members of a particular group, thus affecting communication and perception. This research seeks to analyze data on horror film stereotyping in a new way not by merely observing stereotypes of women in horror film, but by examining the content across time-periods and societal change. A textual analysis will compare 16 total films, 8 original films versus the later remakes of each film. This will help analyze the female stereotypes that exist within horror films as well as society. Even though the media says that stereotypic portrayals have changed over the last few decades, social stereotypes still exist today

    Information and Experience in Metaphor: A Perspective From Computer Analysis

    Novel linguistic metaphor can be seen as the assignment of attributes to a topic through a vehicle belonging to another domain. The experience evoked by the vehicle is a significant aspect of the meaning of the metaphor, especially for abstract metaphor, which involves more than mere physical similarity. In this article I indicate, through description of a specific model, some possibilities as well as limitations of computer processing directed toward both informative and experiential/affective aspects of metaphor. A background to the discussion is given by other computational treatments of metaphor analysis, as well as by some questions about metaphor originating in other disciplines. The approach on which the present metaphor analysis model is based is consistent with a theory of language comprehension that includes both the intent of the originator and the effect on the recipient of the metaphor. The model addresses the dual problem of (a) determining potentially salient properties of the vehicle concept, and (b) defining extensible symbolic representations of such properties, including affective and other connotations. The nature of the linguistic analysis underlying the model suggests how metaphoric expression of experiential components in abstract metaphor is dependent on the nominalization of actions and attributes. The inverse process of undoing such nominalizations in computer analysis of metaphor constitutes a translation of a metaphor to a more literal expression within the metaphor-nonmetaphor dichotomy

    21st Century Transformational Leadership: The Neo-Stereotypical Phenomenon of a Black Female Principal

    The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership perceptions of a Black female first year principal in a predominantly White private Christian school. For years, educational research and leadership models for school principals were theorized and constructed based on White men or those in the dominant group. This study is significant in that it sought to explore the perception of the leadership behaviors and dispositions of a Black female to determine if there was a correlation between the Transformational Leadership Theory and the emergent leadership style. In the qualitative tradition, this autoethnographic study used narrative inquiry to explore the phenomenon of my first year as a principal and examine the intersections of my race and gender that affect my leadership perceptions. The findings from the narrative data introduced a leadership model based on the emergence of the Neo-Stereotypic Black female leader and described the four dimensions; Neo-Mammy, Neo-Jezebel, Neo-Sapphire, and Neo-Matriarch. These dimensions were compared to the four dimensions of the Transformational Leadership Theory. This study identified a strong correlation between the perceived leadership behaviors of a Black female principal with that of the Transformational Leadership Theory

    Chief Illiniwek: understanding the controversial discourse and the politics of power

    Prominent discourses surrounding the Chief Illiniwek mascot controversy on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus, between the years of 2000-2007, will be examined using textual analysis. Utilizing Tribal Critical Race Theory as a guiding framework for the analysis, various materials have been collected (websites, newspapers, testimonials, and personal experience), and subsequently analyzed. The aim of this project is to uncover how these discourses were being framed, who supported them, how students of color experienced their campus racial climate during this controversy, and lastly how the university played a role in perpetuating the use of stereotypical imagery on campus. Suggestions and recommendations that the university should take into consideration in order to effectively address the Chief Illiniwek mascot issue are also presented as concluding remarks
