    The representation and management of evolving features in geospatial databases

    Geographic features change over time, this change being the result of some kind of event or occurrence. It has been a research challenge to represent this data in a manner that reflects human perception. Most database systems used in geographic information systems (GIS) are relational, and change is either captured by exhaustively storing all versions of data, or updates replace previous versions. This stems from the inherent diffculty of modelling geographic objects in relational tables. This diffculty is compounded when the necessary time dimension is introduced to model how those objects evolve. There is little doubt that the object-oriented (OO) paradigm holds signi cant advantages over the relational model when it comes to modelling real-world entities and spatial data, and it is argued that this contention is particularly true when it comes to spatio-temporal data. This thesis describes an object-oriented approach to the design of a conceptual model for representing spatio-temporal geographic data, called the Feature Evolution Model (FEM), based on states and events. The model was used to implement a spatio-temporal database management system in Oracle Spatial, and an interface prototype is described that was used to evaluate the system by enabling querying and visualisation

There are two gestures here: an analytical gesture, which tries to establish a material contact to the lm in question; and the other one, of conceptual tone, which consists in situating the debate on the materiality of communication objects. Through the path of this research for concepts, we have found a fundamental bind between the temporal dimension of forms and the materiality of the aesthetic experience

    Ontologies are key enablers for sharing precise and machine-understandable semantics among different applications and parties. Yet, for ontologies to meet these expectations, their quality must be of a good standard. The quality of an ontology is strongly based on the design method employed. This paper addresses the design problems related to the modelling of ontologies, with specific concentration on the issues related to the quality of the conceptualisations produced. The paper aims to demonstrate the impact of the modelling paradigm adopted on the quality of ontological models and, consequently, the potential impact that such a decision can have in relation to the development of software applications. To this aim, an ontology that is conceptualised based on the Object-Role Modelling (ORM) approach (a representative of endurantism) is re-engineered into a one modelled on the basis of the Object Paradigm (OP) (a representative of perdurantism). Next, the two ontologies are analytically compared using the specified criteria. The conducted comparison highlights that using the OP for ontology conceptualisation can provide more expressive, reusable, objective and temporal ontologies than those conceptualised on the basis of the ORM approach

    Models play a vital role in supporting a range of activities in numerous domains. We rely on models to support the design, visualisation, analysis and representation of parts of the world around us, and as such significant research effort has been invested into numerous areas of modelling; including support for model semantics, dynamic states and behaviour, temporal data storage and visualisation. Whilst these efforts have increased our capabilities and allowed us to create increasingly powerful software-based models, the process of developing models, supporting tools and /or data structures remains difficult, expensive and error-prone. In this paper we define from literature the key factors in assessing a model’s quality and usefulness: semantic richness, support for dynamic states and object behaviour, temporal data storage and visualisation. We also identify a number of shortcomings in both existing modelling standards and model development processes and propose a unified generic process to guide users through the development of semantically rich, dynamic and temporal models

    A Taxonomy of Views about Time in Buddhist and Western Philosophy

    We find the claim that time is not real in both western and eastern philosophical traditions. In what follows I will call the view that time does not exist temporal error theory. Temporal error theory was made famous in western analytic philosophy in the early 1900s by John McTaggart (1908) and, in much the same tradition, temporal error theory was subsequently defended by Gödel (1949). The idea that time is not real, however, stretches back much further than that. It is common to hear it said that according to Buddhist philosophy (as though that were a monolithic view) time is illusory. While it is not true that, in general, either contemporary or ancient Buddhist scholars have thought time to be illusory, there are certainly some schools of Buddhist thought, such as that of traditional Dzogchen practitioners, according to which there is no time. This paper is an attempt to set out a taxonomy of different views about what it takes for there to be time and, alongside that, a taxonomy of views about whether there is time or not, and if there is time what it is like

    The author proposes a dimensional model of our emotion concepts that is intended to be largely independent of one’s theory of emotions and applicable to the different ways in which emotions are measured. He outlines some conditions for selecting the dimensions based on these motivations and general conceptual grounds. Given these conditions he then advances an 8-dimensional model that is shown to effectively differentiate emotion labels both within and across cultures, as well as more obscure expressive language.
