    Recent Developments in Aircraft Flyover Noise Simulation at NASA Langley Research Center

    The NASA Langley Research Center is involved in the development of a new generation of synthesis and simulation tools for creation of virtual environments used in the study of aircraft community noise. The original emphasis was on simulation of flyover noise associated with subsonic fixed wing aircraft. Recently, the focus has shifted to rotary wing aircraft. Many aspects of the simulation are applicable to both vehicle classes. Other aspects, particularly those associated with synthesis, are more vehicle specific. This paper discusses the capabilities of the current suite of tools, their application to fixed and rotary wing aircraft, and some directions for the future

    The Jitter extended library for Max/MSP is distributed with a gamut of tools for the generation, processing, storage, and visual display of multidimensional data structures. With additional support for a wide range of media types, and the interaction between these mediums, the environment presents a perfect working ground for Wave Terrain Synthesis. This research details the practical development of a realtime Wave Terrain Synthesis instrument within the Max/MSP programming environment utilizing the Jitter extended library. Various graphical processing routines are explored in relation to their potential use for Wave Terrain Synthesis

    Playing with technology - an approach to composition

    Approaches to the use of technology in music composition can be organised into two categories characteristic of the concepts of bricoleur and engineer as found in Claude Levi-Strauss' "The Savage Mind". This paper begins by arguing that the engineer approach is of more importance to the future of technology in music composition. It then documents the creation of five pieces, each intimately entwined with the use of technology and utilizing an engineer approach, outlining their associated intentions, technical implementations and concerns. Finally, the ambiguous nature of the role of composer in these pieces is outlined and discussed

    EEuGene: employing electroencephalograph signals in the rating strategy of a hardware-based interactive genetic algorithm

    We describe a novel interface and development platform for an interactive Genetic Algorithm (iGA) that uses Electroencephalograph (EEG) signals as an indication of fitness for selection for successive generations. A gaming headset was used to generate EEG readings corresponding to attention and meditation states from a single electrode. These were communicated via Bluetooth to an embedded iGA implemented on the Arduino platform. The readings were taken to measure subjects’ responses to predetermined short sequences of synthesised sound, although the technique could be applied any appropriate problem domain. The prototype provided sufficient evidence to indicate that use of the technology in this context is viable. However, the approach taken was limited by the technical characteristics of the equipment used and only provides proof of concept at this stage. We discuss some of the limitations of using biofeedback systems and suggest possible improvements that might be made with more sophisticated EEG sensors and other biofeedback mechanisms
