Recent Developments in Aircraft Flyover Noise Simulation at NASA Langley Research Center
The NASA Langley Research Center is involved in the development of a new generation of synthesis and simulation tools for creation of virtual environments used in the study of aircraft community noise. The original emphasis was on simulation of flyover noise associated with subsonic fixed wing aircraft. Recently, the focus has shifted to rotary wing aircraft. Many aspects of the simulation are applicable to both vehicle classes. Other aspects, particularly those associated with synthesis, are more vehicle specific. This paper discusses the capabilities of the current suite of tools, their application to fixed and rotary wing aircraft, and some directions for the future
Developing a flexible and expressive realtime polyphonic wave terrain synthesis instrument based on a visual and multidimensional methodology
The Jitter extended library for Max/MSP is distributed with a gamut of tools for the generation, processing, storage, and visual display of multidimensional data structures. With additional support for a wide range of media types, and the interaction between these mediums, the environment presents a perfect working ground for Wave Terrain Synthesis. This research details the practical development of a realtime Wave Terrain Synthesis instrument within the Max/MSP programming environment utilizing the Jitter extended library. Various graphical processing routines are explored in relation to their potential use for Wave Terrain Synthesis

Oracle-Guided Design and Analysis of Learning-Based Cyber-Physical Systems
We are in world where autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars, surgical robots, robotic manipulators are becoming a reality. Such systems are considered \textit{safety-critical} since they interact with humans on a regular basis. Hence, before such systems can be integrated into our day to day life, we need to guarantee their safety. Recent success in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) has led to an increase in their use in real world robotic systems. For example, complex perception modules in self-driving cars and deep reinforcement learning controllers in robotic manipulators. Although powerful, they introduce an additional level of complexity when it comes to the formal analysis of autonomous systems. In this thesis, such systems are designated as Learning-Based Cyber-Physical Systems~(LB-CPS). In this thesis, we take inspiration from the Oracle-Guided Inductive Synthesis~(OGIS) paradigm to develop frameworks which can aid in achieving formal guarantees in different stages of an autonomous system design and analysis pipeline. Furthermore, we show that to guarantee the safety of LB-CPS, the design (synthesis) and analysis (verification) must consider feedback from the other. We consider five important parts of the design and analysis process and show a strong coupling among them, namely (i) Robust Control Synthesis from High Level Safety Specifications; (ii) Diagnosis and Repair of Safety Requirements for Control Synthesis; (iii) Counter-example Guided Data Augmentation for training high-accuracy ML models; (iv) Simulation-Guided Falsification and Verification against Adversarial Environments; and (v) Bridging Model and Real-World Gap. Finally, we introduce a software toolkit \verifai{} for the design and analysis of AI based systems, which was developed to provide a common formal platform to implement design and analysis frameworks for LB-CPS
Playing with technology - an approach to composition
Approaches to the use of technology in music composition can be organised into two categories characteristic of the concepts of bricoleur and engineer as found in Claude Levi-Strauss' "The Savage Mind". This paper begins by arguing that the engineer approach is of more importance to the future of technology in music composition. It then documents the creation of five pieces, each intimately entwined with the use of technology and utilizing an engineer approach, outlining their associated intentions, technical implementations and concerns. Finally, the ambiguous nature of the role of composer in these pieces is outlined and discussed

TAIs utilise artificial physical objects as well as soundscapes to represent digital information. The interconnection of the two fields establishes a tight coupling between information and operation that is based on the human's familiarity with the incorporated interrelations. This work gives a formal introduction to TAIs and shows their key features at hand of seven proof of concept applications
EEuGene: employing electroencephalograph signals in the rating strategy of a hardware-based interactive genetic algorithm
We describe a novel interface and development platform for an interactive Genetic Algorithm (iGA) that uses Electroencephalograph (EEG) signals as an indication of fitness for selection for successive generations. A gaming headset was used to generate EEG readings corresponding to attention and meditation states from a single electrode. These were communicated via Bluetooth to an embedded iGA implemented on the Arduino platform. The readings were taken to measure subjects’ responses to predetermined short sequences of synthesised sound, although the technique could be applied any appropriate problem domain. The prototype provided sufficient evidence to indicate that use of the technology in this context is viable. However, the approach taken was limited by the technical characteristics of the equipment used and only provides proof of concept at this stage. We discuss some of the limitations of using biofeedback systems and suggest possible improvements that might be made with more sophisticated EEG sensors and other biofeedback mechanisms
