    Spamming the code offset method

We identify an inconsistency in Subjective Logic caused by the discounting operator ‘...’. We propose a new operator, ‘...’, which resolves all the consistency problems. The new algebra makes it possible to compute Subjective Logic trust values (reputations) in arbitrarily connected trust networks. The material presented here is an excerpt of [3]

Fingerprint template protection using minutia-pair spectral representations

Storage of biometric data requires some form of template protection in order to preserve the privacy of people enrolled in a biometric database. One approach is to use a Helper Data System. Here it is necessary to transform the raw biometric measurement into a fixed-length representation. In this paper we extend the spectral function approach of Stanko and Skoric [WIFS2017], which provides such a fixed-length representation for fingerprints. First, we introduce a new spectral function that captures different information from the minutia orientations. It is complementary to the original spectral function, and we use both of them to extract information from a fingerprint image. Second, we construct a helper data system consisting of zero-leakage quantisation followed by the Code Offset Method. We show empirical data which demonstrates that applying our helper data system causes only a small performance penalty compared to fingerprint authentication based on the unprotected spectral functions

Figshare: A universal repository for academic resource sharing?

    Get PDF
Purpose A number of subject-orientated and general websites have emerged to host academic resources. It is important to evaluate the uptake of such services in order to decide which depositing strategies are effective and should be encouraged. Design/methodology/approach This article evaluates the views and shares of resources in the generic repository Figshare by subject category and resource type. Findings Figshare use and common resource types vary substantially by subject category but resources can be highly viewed even in subjects with few members. Subject areas with more resources deposited do not tend to have higher viewing or sharing statistics. Practical implications Limited uptake of Figshare within a subject area should not be a barrier to its use. Several highly successful innovative uses for Figshare show that it can reach beyond a purely academic audience. Originality/value This is the first analysis of the uptake and use of a generic academic resource sharing repository

    Atomic Clock Backup Power System

This work focuses on the design of a system for power backup of atomic clock and for the continuous monitoring of the current state of the batteries used in such a setup. The device built as a part of this work also enables the detection of power outages. System states can also be reported over the GSM network, both automatically and on-demand

Inclusiveness Matters: A Large-Scale Analysis of User Feedback

In an era of rapidly expanding software usage, catering to the diverse needs of users from various backgrounds has become a critical challenge. Inclusiveness, representing a core human value, is frequently overlooked during software development, leading to user dissatisfaction. Users often engage in discourse on online platforms where they indicate their concerns. In this study, we leverage user feedback from three popular online sources, Reddit, Google Play Store, and Twitter, for 50 of the most popular apps in the world to reveal the inclusiveness-related concerns from end users. Using a Socio-Technical Grounded Theory approach, we analyzed 23,107 posts across the three sources and identified 1,211 inclusiveness related posts. We organize our empirical results in a taxonomy for inclusiveness comprising 6 major categories: Fairness, Technology, Privacy, Demography, Usability, and Other Human Values. To explore automated support to identifying inclusiveness-related posts, we experimented with five state-of-the-art pre-trained large language models (LLMs) and found that these models' effectiveness is high and yet varied depending on the data source. GPT-2 performed best on Reddit, BERT on the Google Play Store, and BART on Twitter. Our study provides an in-depth view of inclusiveness-related user feedback from most popular apps and online sources. We provide implications and recommendations that can be used to bridge the gap between user expectations and software so that software developers can resonate with the varied and evolving needs of the wide spectrum of users

    Generating personalised service recommendations

    Get PDF
In the context of service-oriented computing, the issue of service selection is an important one: how can a consumer find and choose a single, appropriate service of the required type, given the mass of services potentially available on a network? By using a service discovery mechanism (the focus of current service selection research), a consumer is able to obtain an unordered list of services which match explicitly specified requirements, from which he must select the service he considers most appropriate. However, formulating the original service request and selecting a service from the returned list are both challenging tasks, particularly for a consumer in unknown circumstances, with unknown services available. This research is thus concerned with the investigation, development and evaluation of a general design for a system that can provide a personalised service recommendation of appropriate services to a requesting consumer. The personalised service recommendation is generated through the assessment of past service selections/usage. A design-adhering prototype has been demonstrated to generate effective personalised service recommendations in a real-world scenario
