    Efficient feasibility analysis of real-time asynchronous task sets

    Several schedulability tests for real-time periodic task sets scheduled under the Earliest Deadline First algorithm have been proposed in literature, including analyses for precedence and resource constraints. However, all available tests consider synchronous task sets only, that are task sets in which all tasks are initially activated at the same time. In fact, every necessary and sufficient feasibility condition for asynchronous task sets, also known as task sets with offsets, is proven to be NP-complete in the number of tasks. We propose a new schedulability test for asynchronous task sets that, while being only sufficient, performs extremely better than available tests at the cost of a slight complexity increase. The test is further extended to task sets with resource constraints, and we discuss the importance of task offsets on the problems of feasibility and release jitter. We then show how our methodology can be extended in order to account for precedence constraints and multiprocessor and distributed computation applying holistic response time analysis to a real-time transaction-based model. This analysis is finally applied to asymmetric multiprocessor systems where it is able to achieve a dramatic performance increase over existing schedulability tests

    Modeling, verification, and analysis of timed actor-based models

    In the recent years, formal modeling and verification of realtime systems have become very important. Difficult-to-use modeling languages and inefficient analysis tools are the main obstacles to use formal methods in this domain. Timed actor model is one of the modeling paradigms which is proposed for modeling of realtime systems. It benefits from high-level object-oriented modeling facilities; however, developed analysis techniques for timed actors needs to be improved to make the actor model acceptable for the analysis of real-world applications. In this thesis, we first tackle the model checking problem of timed actors by proposing the standard semantics of timed actors in terms of fine-grained timed transition system (FGTS) and transforming it to Durational Transition Graph (DTG). This way, while the time complexity of model checking algorithms for TCTL properties, in general, is non-polynomial, we are able to check TCTL properties (a subset of TCTL) using model checking in polynomial time. We also improve the model checking algorithm of TCTL properties, obtaining time complexity of O((V lg V+E) |Φ|) instead of O(V(V+E)|Φ|) and use it for efficient model checking of timed actors. In addition, we propose a reduction technique which safely eliminates instantaneous transitions of FGTS. Using the proposed reduction technique, we provide an efficient algorithm for model checking of complete TCTL properties over the reduced transition systems. In actor-based models, the absence of shared variables and the presence of single-threaded actors along with non-preemptive execution of each message server, ensure that the execution of message servers do not interfere with each other. Based on this observation, we propose Floating Time Transition System (FTTS) as the big-step semantics of timed actors. The big-step semantics exploits actor features for relaxing the synchronization of progressof time among actors, and thereby reducing the number of states in transition systems. Considering an actor-based language, we prove there is an action-based weak bisimulation relation between FTTS and FGTS. As a result, the big-step semantics preserves event-based branching-time properties. Finally, we show how Timed Rebeca and FTTS are used as the back-end analysis technique of three different independent works to illustrate the applicability of FTTS in practice.The work on this dissertation was supported by the project “Self-Adaptive Actors:SEADA” (nr. 163205-051) of the Icelandic Research Fund

    Adaptive Middleware for Resource-Constrained Mobile Ad Hoc and Wireless Sensor Networks

    Mobile ad hoc networks: MANETs) and wireless sensor networks: WSNs) are two recently-developed technologies that uniquely function without fixed infrastructure support, and sense at scales, resolutions, and durations previously not possible. While both offer great potential in many applications, developing software for these types of networks is extremely difficult, preventing their wide-spread use. Three primary challenges are: 1) the high level of dynamics within the network in terms of changing wireless links and node hardware configurations,: 2) the wide variety of hardware present in these networks, and: 3) the extremely limited computational and energy resources available. Until now, the burden of handling these issues was put on the software application developer. This dissertation presents three novel programming models and middleware systems that address these challenges: Limone, Agilla, and Servilla. Limone reliably handles high levels of dynamics within MANETs. It does this through lightweight coordination primitives that make minimal assumptions about network connectivity. Agilla enables self-adaptive WSN applications via the integration of mobile agent and tuple space programming models, which is critical given the continuously changing network. It is the first system to successfully demonstrate the feasibility of using mobile agents and tuple spaces within WSNs. Servilla addresses the challenges that arise from WSN hardware heterogeneity using principles of Service-Oriented Computing: SOC). It is the first system to successfully implement the entire SOC model within WSNs and uniquely tailors it to the WSN domain by making it energy-aware and adaptive. The efficacies of the above three systems are demonstrated through implementation, micro-benchmarks, and the evaluation of several real-world applications including Universal Remote, Fire Detection and Tracking, Structural Health Monitoring, and Medical Patient Monitoring

    dissertationA modern software system is a composition of parts that are themselves highly complex: operating systems, middleware, libraries, servers, and so on. In principle, compositionality of interfaces means that we can understand any given module independently of the internal workings of other parts. In practice, however, abstractions are leaky, and with every generation, modern software systems grow in complexity. Traditional ways of understanding failures, explaining anomalous executions, and analyzing performance are reaching their limits in the face of emergent behavior, unrepeatability, cross-component execution, software aging, and adversarial changes to the system at run time. Deterministic systems analysis has a potential to change the way we analyze and debug software systems. Recorded once, the execution of the system becomes an independent artifact, which can be analyzed offline. The availability of the complete system state, the guaranteed behavior of re-execution, and the absence of limitations on the run-time complexity of analysis collectively enable the deep, iterative, and automatic exploration of the dynamic properties of the system. This work creates a foundation for making deterministic replay a ubiquitous system analysis tool. It defines design and engineering principles for building fast and practical replay machines capable of capturing complete execution of the entire operating system with an overhead of several percents, on a realistic workload, and with minimal installation costs. To enable an intuitive interface of constructing replay analysis tools, this work implements a powerful virtual machine introspection layer that enables an analysis algorithm to be programmed against the state of the recorded system through familiar terms of source-level variable and type names.
