This protocol aims to facilitate the communication between content producing tools and repositories that persistently manage learning resources and metadata. The SPI work focuses on two problems: (1) facilitating the metadata and resource publication process (publication in this context refers to the ability to ingest metadata and resources); and (2) enabling interoperability between various components in a federation of repositories. This article discusses the different contexts where a protocol for publishing resources is relevant. SPI contains an abstract domain model and presents several methods that a repository can support. An Atom Publishing Protocol binding is proposed that allows for implementing SPI with a concrete technology and enables interoperability between applications.European Committee for Standardization (CEN), CEN/Expert/2009/3

    Validating a Web Service Security Abstraction by Typing

    An XML web service is, to a first approximation, an RPC service in which requests and responses are encoded in XML as SOAP envelopes, and transported over HTTP. We consider the problem of authenticating requests and responses at the SOAP-level, rather than relying on transport-level security. We propose a security abstraction, inspired by earlier work on secure RPC, in which the methods exported by a web service are annotated with one of three security levels: none, authenticated, or both authenticated and encrypted. We model our abstraction as an object calculus with primitives for defining and calling web services. We describe the semantics of our object calculus by translating to a lower-level language with primitives for message passing and cryptography. To validate our semantics, we embed correspondence assertions that specify the correct authentication of requests and responses. By appeal to the type theory for cryptographic protocols of Gordon and Jeffrey's Cryptyc, we verify the correspondence assertions simply by typing. Finally, we describe an implementation of our semantics via custom SOAP headers.Comment: 44 pages.     The AEI 10 m prototype interferometer

    A 10 m prototype interferometer facility is currently being set up at the AEI in Hannover, Germany. The prototype interferometer will be housed inside a 100 m^3 ultra-high vacuum envelope. Seismically isolated optical tables inside the vacuum system will be interferometrically interconnected via a suspension platform interferometer. Advanced isolation techniques will be used, such as inverted pendulums and geometrical anti-spring filters in combination with multiple-cascaded pendulum suspensions, containing an all-silica monolithic last stage. The light source is a 35 W Nd:YAG laser, geometrically filtered by passing it through a photonic crystal fibre and a rigid pre-modecleaner cavity. Laser frequency stabilisation will be achieved with the aid of a high finesse suspended reference cavity in conjunction with a molecular iodine reference. Coating thermal noise will be reduced by the use of Khalili cavities as compound end mirrors. Data acquisition and control of the experiments is based on the AdvLIGO digital control and data system. The aim of the project is to test advanced techniques for GEO 600 as well as to conduct experiments in macroscopic quantum mechanics. Reaching standard quantum-limit sensitivity for an interferometer with 100 g mirrors and subsequently breaching this limit, features most prominently among these experiments.     The Palaeographical Method under the Light of a Digital Approach

    This paper has the twofold aim of reflecting upon a humanities computing approach to palaeography, and of making such reflections - together with its related experimental results - fruitful at the implementation level. Firstly, the paper explores the methodological issues related to the use of a digital tool to support the palaeographical analysis of medieval handwriting. It claims that humanities computing methods can assist in making explicit those processes of the palaeographical research that encompass detailed analyses, in particular of the handwriting and, more generally, of other idiosyncratic features of written cultural artefacts. Thus, palaeographical tools are to be contextualised and used within a broader methodological framework where their role is to mediate the vision, the comparison, the representation, the analysis and the interpretation of these objects. Secondly, the paper attempts to evaluate the experimentations carried out with a specific software and, in so doing, to test a humanities computing approach to palaeography at a practical level, so as to direct future implementations. Some of these implementations have already been carried out by the current developers of the application in question with whom the author collaborates closely, while others are still in progress and in need of future iterative refinements

    Nypa Frutican Rachis as building envelope heat insulator

    This research is conducted to investigate the possibility of cellulose in Nypa Frutican Rachis to achieve thermal comfort. As Malaysia was known as tropical country which has hot and humid climate, this research focus on to study the transfer of heat through Nypa Frutican Rachis as a roof. Since only Nypa leaves have been used as a roof and have been applied until now in East Malaysia, this project uses an innovation of Nypa palm by using its rachis that contain chemical material that have lower thermal conductivity value such as cellulose and lignin as a roof or building envelope heat insulator. This paper described the experimental study method by measuring the temperature of outer and inner surface of Nypa Frutican Rachis on small physical model study. The temperature was measured by using Digital Infrared Thermometer. The average outer and inner tempe rature for five consecutive days was obtained from the experiment is highlighted. Results show that the average of heat loss and heat transfer conduction for five consecutive days are 9.63 W/h and 9.86 W. This experiment shows a good result and proved that Nypa Frutican Rachis is suitable and effective to be a building envelope heat insulator

    In Situ Calibration of Heterogeneous Acquisition Systems: The Monitoring System of a Photovoltaic Plant

    This paper deals with the metrological management of an acquisition system that has been developed for monitoring an experimental photovoltaic (PV) plant. The acquisition system has been conceived for comparing the performance of different PV technologies and for verifying the nominal specifications of the PV modules. For these reasons, the traceability of the monitoring system has to be ensured, and therefore, it must be periodically calibrated. A remotely exercised procedure is proposed for the calibration of the acquisition system, which is based on a calibrator specifically designed for this application. This calibrator has the capability to act as a reference for heterogeneous quantities, including electrical quantities, temperature, and solar irradiance. The architecture of this calibrator is described, and experimental results for the preliminary characterization of the prototype are described
