Empowerment and local level conflict mediation in Indonesia : a comparative analysis of concepts, measures, and project efficacy
The notion of empowerment has been more often deductively claimed than carefully defined or inductively assessed by development scholars and practitioners alike. The authors define and assess empowerment through an in-depth examination of the extent to which a large community development project in rural Indonesia empowers participants (especially members of marginalized groups) through building their capacity to manage local conflict. Although the project induces conflict through its deployment of a competitive bidding process, the authors argue that, when well implemented, it can also enable otherwise unequal groups to more peacefully, equitably, and effectively engage one another. Using a mixed methods approach, they compare cases from otherwise similar treatment and control villages to shed light on the chief components of villagers'capacity to manage local conflict. A Theoretical Framework for Physics Education Research: Modeling Student Thinking
Education is a goal-oriented field. But if we want to treat education
scientifically so we can accumulate, evaluate, and refine what we learn, then
we must develop a theoretical framework that is strongly rooted in objective
observations and through which different theoretical models of student thinking
can be compared. Much that is known in the behavioral sciences is robust and
observationally based. In this paper, I draw from a variety of fields ranging
from neuroscience to sociolinguistics to propose an over-arching theoretical
framework that allows us to both make sense of what we see in the classroom and
to compare a variety of specific theoretical approaches. My synthesis is
organized around an analysis of the individual's cognition and how it interacts
with the environment. This leads to a two level system, a knowledge-structure
level where associational patterns dominate, and a control-structure level
where one can describe expectations and epistemology. For each level, I sketch
some plausible starting models for student thinking and learning in physics and
give examples of how a theoretical orientation can affect instruction and

Factors shaping the evolution of electronic documentation systems
The main goal is to prepare the space station technical and managerial structure for likely changes in the creation, capture, transfer, and utilization of knowledge. By anticipating advances, the design of Space Station Project (SSP) information systems can be tailored to facilitate a progression of increasingly sophisticated strategies as the space station evolves. Future generations of advanced information systems will use increases in power to deliver environmentally meaningful, contextually targeted, interconnected data (knowledge). The concept of a Knowledge Base Management System is emerging when the problem is focused on how information systems can perform such a conversion of raw data. Such a system would include traditional management functions for large space databases. Added artificial intelligence features might encompass co-existing knowledge representation schemes; effective control structures for deductive, plausible, and inductive reasoning; means for knowledge acquisition, refinement, and validation; explanation facilities; and dynamic human intervention. The major areas covered include: alternative knowledge representation approaches; advanced user interface capabilities; computer-supported cooperative work; the evolution of information system hardware; standardization, compatibility, and connectivity; and organizational impacts of information intensive environments
Functional Representation and Reasoning About the F/A-18 Aircraft Fuel System
Functional reasoning, a subfield of model-based reasoning, is discussed. This approach uses abstractions of a device\u27s purpose to index behaviors that achieve that purpose. Functional modeling, a variation on this method, also uses simulation as a core reasoning strategy. The complex causal knowledge of a device along functional lines is decomposed, then a causal story of how the device will operate in a particular situation given stated boundary conditions is composed. The application of the functional approach to modeling the fuel system of a F/A-18 aircraft is described. The representation of the F/A-18 fuel system includes 89 component devices, 92 functions, 118 behaviors, and 181 state variables
CBR and MBR techniques: review for an application in the emergencies domain
The purpose of this document is to provide an in-depth analysis of current reasoning engine practice and the integration strategies of Case Based Reasoning and Model Based Reasoning that will be used in the design and development of the RIMSAT system.
RIMSAT (Remote Intelligent Management Support and Training) is a European Commission funded project designed to:

In other words, RIMSAT aims to design and implement a decision support system that using Case Base Reasoning as well as Model Base Reasoning technology is applied in the management of emergency situations.

This paper surveys research on social capital. We explore the concepts that motivate the social capital literature, efforts to formally model social capital using economic theory, the econometrics of social capital, and empirical studies of the role of social capital in various socioeconomic outcomes. While our focus is primarily on the place of social capital in economics, we do consider its broader social science context. We argue that while the social capital literature has produced many insights, a number of conceptual and statistical problems exist with the current use of social capital by social scientists.
