Organizational transformation through knowledge management : an internship at Luxembourg-slovenian business club

Internship Report presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business IntelligenceThe purpose of this report is to describe a five month internship that the student did at the Slovenian non-profit organization Luxembourg-Slovenian Business Club (LSBC). This internship report stands as partial requirement for obtaining the Master Degree in Information Management with specialization in Knowledge Management and Business Intelligence. Methodologies and the framework followed were largely based on knowledge acquired through the guidance of Nova IMS Information Management Master. The main objective of this internship was to better understand the impact of information on a business context and how to foment a knowledge-based environment. In-depth, the aim was determining the information flow as it stands, identify bottlenecks and help growing a knowledge creation culture while shortening the gap inside the organization and between the organization and its members (both individuals and organizations). The main areas affected by this internship were Knowledge Management, Information Systems and Enterprise 2.0. This report starts by giving an introduction to context and goals where the internship is inserted upon, followed by a detailed description of the background of the organization itself. After this section, it follows literature background focused on Knowledge Management areas - all subjects that were relevant for the internship practical work. Subsequently, an explanation of the of internship objectives and the path to achieve them is further discussed. Also, a presentation of the completed tasks results, followed by a critical opinion about them. Finally, possible future work endeavours that can follow up this project are then present as well as a pragmatic reflexion of the internship. As a result of this report, improvements in information handling and some applied methodologies regarding Knowledge Management will be integrated in the organization. Hopefully, it will also bring to this organization new opportunities to develop business, to establish new partnerships while simultaneously expanding LSBC network of contacts

How to tell stories using visualization: strategies towards narrative visualization

Os benefícios da utilização das narrativas são desde há muito conhecidos e o seu potencial para simplificar conceitos, transmitir valores culturais e experiências, criar ligações emocionais e capacidade para ajudar a reter a informação tem sido explorado em diferentes áreas. As narrativas não são só a principal forma como as pessoas obtêm o sentido do mundo, mas também a forma mais fácil que encontrámos para partilhar informações complexas. Devido ao seu potencial, as narrativas foram recentemente abordadas na área da Visualização de Informação e do Conhecimento, muitas vezes apelidada de Visualização Narrativa. Esta questão é particularmente importante para os media, uma das áreas que tem impulsionado a investigação em Visualização Narrativa. A necessidade de incorporar histórias nas visualizações surge da necessidade de partilhar dados complexos de um modo envolvente. Hoje em dia somos confrontados com a elevada quantidade de informação disponível, um desafio difícil de resolver. Os avanços da tecnologia permitiram ir além das formas tradicionais de narrativa e de representação de dados, dando-nos meios mais atraentes e sofisticados para contar histórias. Nesta tese, exploro os benefícios da introdução de narrativas nas visualizações. Adicionalmente também exploro formas de combinar histórias com a visualizações e métodos eficientes para representar e dar sentido aos dados de uma forma que permite que as pessoas se relacionem com a informação. Esta investigação está bastante próxima da área do jornalismo, no entanto estas técnicas podem ser aplicadas em diferente áreas (educação, visualização científica, etc.). Para explorar ainda mais este tema foi adotada um avaliação que utiliza diferentes metodologias como a tipologia, vários casos de estudo, um estudo com grupos de foco, e ainda estudos de design e análise de técnicas.The benefits of storytelling are long-known and its potential to simplify concepts, convey cultural values and experiences, create emotional connection, and capacity to help retain information has been explored in di erent areas, such as journalism, education, marketing, and others. Narratives not only have been the main way people make sense of the world, but also the easiest way humans found out to share complex information. Due to its potential narratives have also recently been approached in the area of Information and Knowledge Visualization, several times being referred to as Narrative Visualization. This matter is also particularly important for news media, one of the areas that has been pushing the research on Narrative Visualization. The necessity to incorporate storytelling in visualizations arises from the need to share complex data in a way that is engaging. Nowadays we also have the challenge of the high amount of information available, which can be hard to cope with. Advances in technology have enabled us to go beyond the traditional forms of storytelling and representing data, giving us more attractive and sophisticated means to tell stories. In this dissertation, I explore the benefits of infusing visualizations with narratives. In addition I also present ways of combining storytelling with visualization and e cient methods to represent and make sense of data in a way that allows people to relate with the information. This research is closely related to journalism, but these techniques can be applied to completely di erent areas (education, scientific visualization, etc.). To further explore this topic a mixedmethod evaluation that consists of a typology, several case studies and a focus group study was chosen, as well as design studies and techniques review. This dissertation is intended to contribute to the evolving understanding of the field of narrative visualization

The evolution of business analytics : based on case study research

While business analytics is becoming more significant and widely used by companies from increasing industries, for many the concept remains a complex illusion. The field of business analytics is considerably generic and fragmented, leaving managers confused and ultimately inhibited to make valuable decisions. This paper presents an evolutionary depiction of business analytics, using real-world case studies to illustrate a distinct overview that describes where the phenomenon was derived from, where it currently stands, and where it is heading towards. This paper provides eight case studies, representing three different eras: yesterday (1950s to 1990s), today (2000s to 2020s), and tomorrow (2030s to 2050s). Through cross-case analysis we have identified concluding patterns that lay as foundation for the discussion on future development within business analytics. We argue based on our findings that automatization of business processes will most likely continue to increase. AI is expanding in numerous areas, each specializing in a complex task, previously reserved by professionals. However, patterns show that new occupations linked to artificial intelligence will most probably be created. For the training of intelligent systems, data will most likely be requested more than ever. The increasing data will likely cause complications in current data infrastructures, causing the need for stronger networks and systems. The systems will need to process, store, and manage the great amount of various data types in real-time, while maintaining high security. Furthermore, data privacy concerns have become more significant in recent years, although, the case study research indicates that it has not limited corporations access to data. The Trouble With Big Data

This book explores the challenges society faces with big data, through the lens of culture rather than social, political or economic trends, as demonstrated in the words we use, the values that underpin our interactions, and the biases and assumptions that drive us. Focusing on areas such as data and language, data and sensemaking, data and power, data and invisibility, and big data aggregation, it demonstrates that humanities research, focussing on cultural rather than social, political or economic frames of reference for viewing technology, resists mass datafication for a reason, and that those very reasons can be instructive for the critical observation of big data research and innovation

Knowledge-Based Decision Support for Integrated Water Resources Management with an application for Wadi Shueib, Jordan

This book takes a two-staged approach to contribute to the contemporary Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) research. First it investigates sub-basin-scale IWRM modelling and scenario planning. The Jordanian Wadi Shueib is used as exemplary case study. Then, it develops a framework to collaboratively manage planning and decision making knowledge on the basis of semantic web technologies. Future IWRM initiatives can benefit from the valuable insights achieved in the presented study

BIM FM: An international call for action

Despite significant progress for the adoption of BIM in AEC, currently its adoption for FM has been sparse, scarce, and extraneous. There are few cases in the world where robust adoption has taken place that are able to demonstrate success and are willing to disseminate the positive impact of BIM FM on sustainability, operational efficiency, and cost reduction. To date, there is no approach, motivation, or support in place to enable the extensive adoption of BIM for FM worldwide. In the UK, for instance, the UK BIM initiative, mandate, and the Digital Built Britain cannot count on the participation of FM stakeholders; the government has only started promoting initiatives that could trigger an extensive BIM approach, generating benefits for organizations and more importantly, society as a whole. In this chapter, data from authors’ various research projects has been put together to generate an agenda for BIM FM implementation. The findings reveal that unless an intervention, such as a mandate for FM services suppliers, is put in place, very little will happen with regards to BIM FM

The European data protection laws and their practical application in Austria and Sweden

Die Europäische Union strebt danach die rechtliche Situation für elektronische Datenverarbeitung in Europa zu vereinheitlichen. Dies geschieht durch Direktiven welche dann in nationalen Gesetzen implementiert werden müssen. Als ein Effekt dieses Prozesses variiert die lokale rechtliche Situation in den Mitgliedsstaaten. Dadurch entstehen zusätzliche rechtliche Hindernisse für Klein- und Mittelbetriebe welche über Landesgrenzen hinweg operieren, zusätzlich zu deren bereits bestehenden Anstrengungen die lokalen Vorgaben zu befolgen. Diese Arbeit beschreibt für Unternehmen in Österreich und Schweden die rechtlichen Vorschriften hinsichlich Informationsverarbeitung. Besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf praktische Beispiele und Gerichtsurteile gelegt, um die rechtlichen Fallstricke im Rahmen der elektronischen Datenverarbeitung aufzuzeigen. Die Analyse konzentriert sich auf die Verarbeitung von Geschäftsinformationen zwischen zwei Parteien sowie die Verwendung von Informationstechnologie für interne Zwecke. Nach der Darlegung der rechtlichen Situation beschreibt der zweite Teil der Arbeit wie ein Unternehmen an diese Probleme herangehen kann. Mittels eines theoretischen Modells werden die Informationsflüsse und Verbindungen aufgezeigt, und wie sie durch die rechtlichen Anforderungen betroffen sind. Praktische Lösungen werden dargelegt und deren Unterschiede in der Implementierung in Österreich und Schweden hervorgehoben. Die Arbeit schliesst mit einem generellen Vergleich der Situation in beiden Ländern, und Hinweisen darüber welche Datenschutz-Philosophie ein Unternehmen jeweils wählen sollte.The European Union strives to unify the legal situation in regard to data processing in Europe. This is done through directives, which then have to be implemented into national law. As a result of this process the local legal situation varies among the member states. This introduces additional hurdles for small to medium sized companies who operate across borders, apart from their already existing struggles to comply with their local legal requirements. This thesis describes for Austria and Sweden the legal regulations that apply to a company handling information. Special emphasis has been given to practical examples and court decisions to point out the legal pitfalls in processing information by electronic means. The analysis focuses on processing business information between two entities as well as using information technology for internal purposes. After introducing the legal situation, the second part of the work describes how a company can approach the issue at hand. By using a theoretical model the possible information flows and connections are shown and how they are affected by the legal requirements. Practical solutions are then provided and the differences in their implementation in Austria and Sweden are pointed out. The thesis concludes with a high level comparison of the situation in the two countries, and general advice about which data protection philosophy a company should chose for each of them
