Foreground and background text in retrieval
Our hypothesis is that certain clauses have foreground functions in text,
while other clauses have background functions and that these functions are
expressed or reflected in the syntactic structure of the clause.
Presumably these clauses will have differing utility for automatic
approaches to text understanding; a summarization system might want to
utilize background clauses to capture commonalities between numbers of
documents while an indexing system might use foreground clauses in order to
capture specific characteristics of a certain document
Event-based Access to Historical Italian War Memoirs
The progressive digitization of historical archives provides new, often
domain specific, textual resources that report on facts and events which have
happened in the past; among these, memoirs are a very common type of primary
source. In this paper, we present an approach for extracting information from
Italian historical war memoirs and turning it into structured knowledge. This
is based on the semantic notions of events, participants and roles. We evaluate
quantitatively each of the key-steps of our approach and provide a graph-based
representation of the extracted knowledge, which allows to move between a Close
and a Distant Reading of the collection.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
A Survey of Paraphrasing and Textual Entailment Methods
Paraphrasing methods recognize, generate, or extract phrases, sentences, or
longer natural language expressions that convey almost the same information.
Textual entailment methods, on the other hand, recognize, generate, or extract
pairs of natural language expressions, such that a human who reads (and trusts)
the first element of a pair would most likely infer that the other element is
also true. Paraphrasing can be seen as bidirectional textual entailment and
methods from the two areas are often similar. Both kinds of methods are useful,
at least in principle, in a wide range of natural language processing
applications, including question answering, summarization, text generation, and
machine translation. We summarize key ideas from the two areas by considering
in turn recognition, generation, and extraction methods, also pointing to

Unity in diversity : integrating differing linguistic data in TUSNELDA
This paper describes the creation and preparation of TUSNELDA, a collection of corpus data built for linguistic research. This collection contains a number of linguistically annotated corpora which differ in various aspects such as language, text sorts / data types, encoded annotation levels, and linguistic theories underlying the annotation. The paper focuses on this variation on the one hand and the way how these heterogeneous data are integrated into one resource on the other hand
Unsupervised Extraction of Representative Concepts from Scientific Literature
This paper studies the automated categorization and extraction of scientific
concepts from titles of scientific articles, in order to gain a deeper
understanding of their key contributions and facilitate the construction of a
generic academic knowledgebase. Towards this goal, we propose an unsupervised,
domain-independent, and scalable two-phase algorithm to type and extract key
concept mentions into aspects of interest (e.g., Techniques, Applications,
etc.). In the first phase of our algorithm we propose PhraseType, a
probabilistic generative model which exploits textual features and limited POS
tags to broadly segment text snippets into aspect-typed phrases. We extend this
model to simultaneously learn aspect-specific features and identify academic
domains in multi-domain corpora, since the two tasks mutually enhance each
other. In the second phase, we propose an approach based on adaptor grammars to
extract fine grained concept mentions from the aspect-typed phrases without the
need for any external resources or human effort, in a purely data-driven
manner. We apply our technique to study literature from diverse scientific
domains and show significant gains over state-of-the-art concept extraction
