Set and Spike: Mentoring a Student-Athlete in STEM for Undergraduate Engineering Education Research

    Get PDF
It is well known that student-athletes are more diverse and higher academic achievers, on average, than their collegiate peers. However, little research has explored the mentoring relationships of student-athletes who conduct undergraduate research. Unique challenges and opportunities exist for student-athletes and faculty when it comes to mentoring undergraduate research in fields like science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Using a collaborative autoethnographic methodological approach and apprenticeship theory, our personal narratives detail how an engineering professor mentored a former engineering student-athlete for undergraduate engineering education research. We offer several findings and recommendations

Early stages of reading and writing rest solely on the alphabet.  Learning of letters with infographics in the elementary classes makes learning more easy and meaningful.  The study examined the potentials of infographics in enhancing learning at an early childhood level especially on letters.  The researcher utilized experimental design which including pre and post-test. The package was validated by experts with a reliability coefficient of 0. 77. The findings of this study showed that the experimental group means a score of 30.60 is higher than the control group means a score of 30.50 co-efficient. Moreover, the means score of 30.742 for females and 30.345 for male pupils was obtained. The study concluded that children at the early childhood level could learn better using infographics based approach. It was recommended that incentives should be provided for pre-school teachers to participate in highly effective staff development to help them integrate infographics into their teaching and learning. Also, infographics based approach be used for all subjects in early childhood education in Nigeri

THE EFFECTS OF INFOGRAPHICS ON ENHANCING LANGUAGE LEARNING OUTCOMES AND MOTIVATION IN A JAPANESE EFL CONTEXT

    Get PDF
The existent research details pedagogical benefits of infographics in enhancing communication, comprehension, learning, and motivation, while more research on the potential educational benefits of using infographics is needed regarding their application in second language acquisition. The aim of this study was specifically to investigate the effects of using infographics as a supplemental teaching tool in EFL classes with a focus on learning outcomes and English learning motivation. The study was conducted in two lower-intermediate English classes at a Japanese university. An infographic of the grammar points of simple past/past continuous was designed and applied as a supplement to the textbook-related content. One class was taught in a textbook-infographic order and the other vice versa. Participants’ understanding of the target grammar points and English learning motivation were measured. The findings suggested that students were able to learn effectively using the provided infographics, but it is more effective to use infographics after the textbook teaching. Students showed higher English language learning motivation after the interventions and a high interest in using infographics in their English language course. Teaching advices on using infographics in EFL classes were discussed.  Article visualizations

Validity And Practicality Of Infographic Teaching Media In The Basic Science Concepts Course

    Get PDF
Based on the observations made by the researchers, the average UAS score for the Basic Science Concepts course in the 2019/2020 odd semester only reached 61.13 out of 46 students. There are as many as 13 students whose grades are below B. The low average value of the final semester examinations is due to the low understanding of students' concepts of lecture material. Learning media is a means to transfer knowledge from educators to students. Today's technological developments have an impact on improving the quality of human resource educators in making learning media, coupled with the demands of the current situation, namely the Covid-19 pandemic that was felt by Indonesia in early 2020, which has had an impact on massive technological needs. Digital learning media is something that must and must be mastered by educators. Based on the problems above, the researchers are interested in conducting development research with the title of developing infographic-based teaching media to improve students' understanding of concepts. The purpose of this research is to develop valid and practical infographic-based teaching media. The method used is research and development (Research and Development) borg and gall. This paper specifically discusses the quality of the developed infographic media. Quantitative description is an analysis of the data used. The results of this study are: 1) the resulting infographic media has a very valid category, 2) the resulting infographic media has a very practical category

Exploring Students’ Interpretation Skills on Data of Covid-19 Infographic Relating to Statistic

    Get PDF
This study aimed to determine the ability to interpret the Covid-19 infographic data relating to statistics. This research was a descriptive study with a qualitative approach and using online system. The data collection techniques are carried out through test of the ability of interpreting the Covid-19 infographic data and interview. The subjects of this study were students of grade VII, Junior High School 1 Palembang which consisted of 4 students with various ability. The most common indicators are reading simple graph, reading a trend in graph and extracting qualitative information from quantitative information. The least likely indicator is reading key features from graphs and comparing information from two graphs

The Use of Infographics to Assess Context Processing

Among high-order cognitive functions is the use of context to enhance comprehension of language or visual scenes. Although use of context is known to be impaired in certain clinical populations (e.g., schizophrenia), no existing test adequately assesses this construct. To fill this gap, we developed and attempted to validate a test of context use that employed Infographics (information graphics), which requires the use of context to interpret visual displays. The primary hypothesis was that interpreting Infographics would be sensitive to context processing. We further hypothesized that different levels of cognitive processing (requiring basic perceptual, real-world application, or verbal reasoning), as well as different categories of Infographics (Data Display, Maps, Diagrams, or Timelines) would tap differential cognitive functions. Forty Infographics test items were developed based upon design principles of Infographics. Following development of items, the Infographics test, as well as a battery of neuropsychological tests, were administered to 161 participants. Overall, results revealed that our Infographics did target context. However, the test also places significant demands on verbal reasoning and similar cognitive functions apply to each level of cognitive processing. Finally, results indicated that similar cognitive functions applied to all categories of Infographics, with the exception of the three of the categories of Data Display, Maps, and Diagrams, which were associated with graphical literacy skills, whereas Timeline was not. In sum, we present data that a newly developed Infographics test is a valuable tool to assess context, and may be applied to evaluate individual differences among healthy individuals, as well as to evaluate impairment in patients with specific clinical diagnoses. However, test performance is not specific to context processing and the test is also sensitive to other high-order cognitive functions, including verbal reasoning

The present study aims to educate starters to work on the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law and making a proposal to educate them by employing animated infographics. It also defines the quality of the animated infographics from the perspective of the target group to educate starters to work on the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law. Therefore, the authors selected and designed animated infographics using Vyond software of the most important articles in the implementing regulation of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law from signing to terminating a work contract to educate the fresh graduates and starters in Saudi Arabia. They also developed and applied a questionnaire to (50) fresh graduates and starters to measure the feasibility of employing animated infographics in raising their awareness of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law. The results showed that the animated infographic proved effective in raising the awareness of the participants of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law. The authors recommended the need to employ animated infographics in educating starters on the developments of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law to enhance learning. They also recommended that the field training supervisors should use the designed animated infographic in developing the programs of graduate qualification for the labor market
