    The Role of Access to Personal Support in Fostering Frequent Information Systems Use

    Recent research has begun to examine some of the factors underlying the continued use of information systems. This paper seeks to contribute to this emerging research stream through a preliminary investigation of the role played by user access to various support resources in encouraging frequent system use in personal use contexts. Although organizations typically provide users with access to formal support resources through help desk services, a body of literature exists which suggests that individuals may rely to a significant extent on resources such as friends and co-workers to support their ongoing use of personal information systems. An examination of this possibility was performed using an archival data set. Analysis of the data using structural equation modeling (SEM) indicates that user perceptions that they can rely on friends, co-workers, and personal abilities to resolve technical difficulties are associated with more frequent system use

    The Core of Care Management: The Role of Authentic Relationships in Caring for Patients with Frequent Hospitalizations.

    In the movement to improve the health of patients with multiple chronic conditions and vulnerabilities, while reducing the need for hospitalizations, care management programs have garnered wide attention and support. The qualitative data presented in this paper sheds new light on key components of successful chronic care management programs. By going beyond a task- and temporal-based framework, this analysis identifies and defines the importance of authentic healing relationships in driving individual and systemic change. Drawing on the voices of 30 former clients of the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, the investigators use qualitative methods to identify and elaborate the core elements of the authentic healing relationship-security, genuineness, and continuity-a relationship that is linked to patient motivation and active health management. Although not readily found in the traditional health care delivery system, these authentic healing relationships present significant implications for addressing the persistent health-related needs of patients with frequent hospitalizations.     Is a friend in need a friend indeed? Inclusion and exclusion in mutual insurance networks in southern Ghana

    Mutual insurance has been shown, theoretically and empirically, to be incomplete and limited by asymmetric information and lack of enforcement mechanisms. While some research has shown that networks based on kinship, neighborhood and ethnicity may provide a locus of insurance and thus a way of overcoming these problems, these studies are not fine enough to predict the inclusion and exclusion of individuals. Using data from rural Ghana, we examine the role of social relations in obtaining assistance in the face of shocks. We examine this at both the intra-household and community levels. At the household level, asking for and receiving assistance from the spouse is related to gender, the quality of the marital relationship, and the wealth of household members. At the community level, asking for and receiving help are correlated with membership in a major lineage, participation in secular organizations, the individual¿s fostering history, and anticipated land inheritance. We also show that these factors differ depending on whether the shortfall was for a household or personal item (as perceived by the respondent).     Complexity-based learning and teaching: a case study in higher education

    This paper presents a learning and teaching strategy based on complexity science and explores its impacts on a higher education game design course. The strategy aimed at generating conditions fostering individual and collective learning in educational complex adaptive systems, and led the design of the course through an iterative and adaptive process informed by evidence emerging from course dynamics. The data collected indicate that collaboration was initially challenging for students, but collective learning emerged as the course developed, positively affecting individual and team performance. Even though challenged, students felt highly motivated and enjoyed working on course activities. Their perception of progress and expertise were always high, and the academic performance was on average very good. The strategy fostered collaboration and allowed students and tutors to deal with complex situations requiring adaptation

    Using web-based peer assessment in fostering deep learning in computer programming

    Active learning is considered by many academics as an important and effective learning strategy. Students can improve the quality of their work by developing their higher cognitive skills through reflection on their own ideas and practice of analytic and evaluative skills. Peer assessment is one of the successful approaches which can be used to enhance this deep learning. In this paper we discuss a novel web-based peer assessment system to support computer programming courses. We discuss the educational rational for the system, and the deep learning theory, report on its deployment on large programming modules. The preliminary results indicate that the system has successfully helped students to develop their higher cognitive skills in learning computer programming

    Absorptive capacity and relationship learning mechanisms as complementary drivers of green innovation performance

    This paper aims to explore in depth how internal and external knowledge-based drivers actually affect the firms\u2019 green innovation performance. Subsequently, this study analyzes the relationships between absorptive capacity (internal knowledge-based driver), relationship learning (external knowledge-based driver) and green innovation performance. This study relies on a sample of 112 firms belonging to the Spanish automotive components manufacturing sector (ACMS) and uses partial least squares path modeling to test the hypotheses proposed. The empirical results show that both absorptive capacity and relationship learning exert a significant positive effect on the dependent variable and that relationship learning moderates the link between absorptive capacity and green innovation performance. This paper presents some limitations with respect to the particular sector (i.e. the ACMS) and geographical context (Spain). For this reason, researchers must be thoughtful while generalizing these results to distinct scenarios. Managers should devote more time and resources to reinforce their absorptive capacity as an important strategic tool to generate new knowledge and hence foster green innovation performance in manufacturing industries. The paper shows the importance of encouraging decision-makers to cultivate and rely on relationship learning mechanisms with their main stakeholders and to acquire the necessary information and knowledge that might be valuable in the maturity of green innovations.
