    Reliability and performance evaluation of systems containing embedded rule-based expert systems

    A method for evaluating the reliability of real-time systems containing embedded rule-based expert systems is proposed and investigated. It is a three stage technique that addresses the impact of knowledge-base uncertainties on the performance of expert systems. In the first stage, a Markov reliability model of the system is developed which identifies the key performance parameters of the expert system. In the second stage, the evaluation method is used to determine the values of the expert system's key performance parameters. The performance parameters can be evaluated directly by using a probabilistic model of uncertainties in the knowledge-base or by using sensitivity analyses. In the third and final state, the performance parameters of the expert system are combined with performance parameters for other system components and subsystems to evaluate the reliability and performance of the complete system. The evaluation method is demonstrated in the context of a simple expert system used to supervise the performances of an FDI algorithm associated with an aircraft longitudinal flight-control system

    Multi-scale reliability analysis of composite structures – Application to the Laroin footbridge

    This work aims at developing a new methodology for the reliability assessment of composite structures and their design optimization. It relies on the coupling of well established methods: homogenization scheme for the mechanical modelling of composite materials and reliability methods to account for their inherent variability. Moreover, such approach is based on an accurate treatment of inherent uncertainties of these mechanical systems at various scales, including microscopic and macroscopic levels, that provides newperspectives for structural design. As an illustration, we propose to apply the multi-scale reliability analysis on the case of the Laroin footbridge (France) with carbon–epoxy stay cables. Since the reliability assessment of such structure is evaluated through the fibre failure, numerical simulations require the coupling of reliability methods, finite element modelling to derive macroscopic loading within cables and micromechanics to estimate the effective elastic properties of composite and local responses within constituents. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the coupled approach at a structure scale and its main interests for the optimization phase of materials and engineering structures

    Study on fault-tolerant processors for advanced launch system

    Issues related to the reliability of a redundant system with large main memory are addressed. The Fault-Tolerant Processor (FTP) for the Advanced Launch System (ALS) is used as a basis for the presentation. When the system is free of latent faults, the probability of system crash due to multiple channel faults is shown to be insignificant even when voting on the outputs of computing channels is infrequent. Using channel error maskers (CEMs) is shown to improve reliability more effectively than increasing redundancy or the number of channels for applications with long mission times. Even without using a voter, most memory errors can be immediately corrected by those CEMs implemented with conventional coding techniques. In addition to their ability to enhance system reliability, CEMs (with a very low hardware overhead) can be used to dramatically reduce not only the need of memory realignment, but also the time required to realign channel memories in case, albeit rare, such a need arises. Using CEMs, two different schemes were developed to solve the memory realignment problem. In both schemes, most errors are corrected by CEMs, and the remaining errors are masked by a voter
