    Sieving the Landscape of Gravity Theories. From the Equivalence Principles to the Near-Planck Regime

    This thesis focusses on three main aspects of the foundations of any theory of gravity where the gravitational field admits a geometric interpretation: (a) the principles of equivalence; (b) their role as selection rules in the landscape of extended theories of gravity; and (c) the possible modifications of the spacetime structure at a "mesoscopic" scale, due to underlying, microscopic-level, quantum-gravitational effects. The first result of the work is the introduction of a formal definition of the Gravitational Weak Equivalence Principle, which expresses the universality of free fall of test objects with non-negligible self-gravity, in a matter-free environment. This principle extends the Galilean universality of free-fall world-lines for test bodies with negligible self-gravity (Weak Equivalence Principle). Second, we use the Gravitational Weak Equivalence Principle to build a sieve for some classes of extended theories of gravity, to rule out all models yielding non-universal free-fall motion for self-gravitating test bodies. When applied to metric theories of gravity in four spacetime dimensions, the method singles out General Relativity (both with and without the cosmological constant term), whereas in higher-dimensional scenarios the whole class of Lanczos--Lovelock gravity theories also passes the test. Finally, we focus on the traditional, manifold-based model of spacetime, and on how it could be modified, at a "mesoscopic" (experimentally attainable) level, by the presence of an underlying, sub-Planckian quantum regime. The possible modifications are examined in terms of their consequences on the hypotheses at the basis of von Ignatowski's derivation of the Lorentz transformations. It results that either such modifications affect sectors already tightly constrained (e.g. violations of the principle of relativity and/or of spatial isotropy), or they demand a radical breakdown of the operative interpretation of the coordinates as readings of clocks and rods

    The Resemblance Structure of Natural Kinds: A Formal Model for Resemblance Nominalism

    278 p.The aim of this thesis is to better understand the ways natural kinds are related to each other by species-genus relations and the ways in which the members of the kind are related to each other by resemblance relations, by making use of formal models of kinds. This is done by first analysing a Minimal Conception of Natural Kinds and then reconstructing it from the ontological assumptions of Resemblance Nominalism. The questions addressed are:(1) What is the external structure of kinds' In what ways are kinds related to each other by species-genus relations'(2) What is the internal structure of kinds' In what sense are the instances of a kind similar enough to each other'According to the Minimal Conception of Kinds, kinds have two components, a set of members of the kind (the extension) and a set of natural attributes common to these objects (the intension). Several interesting features of this conception are discussed by making use of the mathematical theory of concept lattices. First, such structures provide a model for contemporary formulations of syllogistic logic. Second, kinds are ordered forming a complete lattice that follows Kant's law of the duality between extension and intension, according to which the extension of a kind is inversely related to its intension. Finally, kinds are shown to have Aristotelian definitions in terms of genera and specific differences. Overall this results in a description of the specificity relations of kinds as an algebraic calculus.According to Resemblance Nominalism, attributes or properties are classes of similar objects. Such an approach faces Goodman's companionship and imperfect community problems. In order to deal with these, a specific nominalism, namely Aristocratic Resemblance Nominalism, is chosen. According to it, attributes are classes of objects resembling a given paradigm. A model for it is introduced by making use of the mathematical theory of similarity structures and of some results on the topic of quasianalysis. Two other models (the polar model and an order-theoretic model) are considered and shown to be equivalent to the previous one.The main result is that the class of lattices of kinds that a nominalist can recover uniquely by starting from these assumptions is that of complete coatomistic lattices. Several other related results are obtained, including a generalization of the similarity model that allows for paradigms with several properties and properties with several paradigms. The conclusion is that, under nominalist assumptions, the internal structure of kinds is fixed by paradigmatic objects and the external structure of kinds is that of a coatomistic lattice that satisfies the Minimal Conception of Kinds

    The main ideas of the EDWs perspective are in Gabriel Vacariu’s PhD thesis posted online by UNSW (Australia) in 2007!!! I have realized the GREATEST discovery in the history of human knowledge: the EDWs! With discovering the EDWs, I have changed everything in Philosophy, Physics and Cognitive Neuroscience! This has been the main reason, so many people have published UNBELIEVABLE similar ideas to my ideas, many years I published my first works! UNBELIEVABLE, many (hundreds) “great” or small thinkers did the same thing in 2006-2007 and later: they published the same ideas, UNBELIEVABLE similar to my ideas from 2002-2005! They believe they would be considered co-authors of the same new framework of thinking. They did not know that many “professors” would do the same thing: they plagiarized my ideas and they hurry up to published their work as soon as possible (in 2006-2007, depending when they discovered my article 2005). So, in the same 2 years, many people “discovered” the same new framework of thinking, the EDWs perspective, each of them did not think that there would be so many other people doing the same thing, that is, many people “discovered” the same new framework (the greatest challenge in the history of human thinking!) in the same period! Such coincidences (the discovery of the EDWs in the same two years!!!) are quite IMPOSSIBLE!! This is the reason nobody quoted my name, but nobody quoted any name who PLAGIARIZED my ideas
 In 2006-2007, I was wondering why nobody quote my name, but in fact, they plagiarized my ideas. Nobody discovered this framework of thinking 2500 years, and in 2-3 years, many people discovered it!!!! IMPOSSIBLE!!!! There were some "professors" who published articles/chapters very close to Bohr's complementarity, Dirac, de Broglie's dualism before 2005 (for instance Carlo Rovelli 1996 or Ladyman), but their works were constructed within the "unicorn world" (Universe/world), therefore, these works had nothing in common with the EDWs perspective!!!! In reality, all of them plagiarized my ideas! It was like many people composed Beethoven Fifth’s Symphony, claiming that they never listen Beethoven! Who would be so stupid to believe them
