Ordered Statistics Vertex Extraction and Tracing Algorithm (OSVETA)
We propose an algorithm for identifying vertices from three dimensional (3D)
meshes that are most important for a geometric shape creation. Extracting such
a set of vertices from a 3D mesh is important in applications such as digital
watermarking, but also as a component of optimization and triangulation. In the
first step, the Ordered Statistics Vertex Extraction and Tracing Algorithm
(OSVETA) estimates precisely the local curvature, and most important
topological features of mesh geometry. Using the vertex geometric importance
ranking, the algorithm traces and extracts a vector of vertices, ordered by
decreasing index of importance.Comment: Accepted for publishing and Copyright transfered to Advances in

Observation of charge ordering signal in monovalent doped Nd0.75Na0.25-xKxMn1O3 (0 †x †0.10) manganites
K doping in the compound of Nd0.75Na0.25-xKxMn1O3 (x = 0, 0.05 and 0.10) manganites have been investigated to study its effect on crystalline phase and surface morphology as well as electrical transport and magnetic properties. The structure properties of the Nd0.75Na0.25- xKxMnO3 manganite have been characterized using X-ray diffraction measurement and it proved that the crystalline phase of samples were essentially single phased and indexed as orthorhombic structure with space group of Pnma. The morphological study from scanning electron microscope showed there was an improvement on the grains boundaries and sizes as well as the compactness with K doping suggestively due to the difference of ionic radius. On the other hand, DC electrical resistivity measurement showed all samples exhibit insulating behavior. However, analysis of dlnÏ/dT-1 vs. T revealed the clearly peaks could be observed at temperature 210K for x = 0 and the peaks were shifted to the lower temperature around 190 K and 165 K for x = 0.05 and x = 0.1 respectively, indicate the existence of charge ordering (CO) state in the compound. Meanwhile, the investigation on magnetic behavior showed all samples exhibit transition from paramagnetic phase to anti-ferromagnetic phase with decreasing temperature and the TN was observed to shift to lower temperature suggestively due to weakening of CO stat
A plan for spacecraft automated rendezvous
An automated rendezvous approach has been developed that utilizes advances in technology to reduce real-time/near real-time flight operations support personnel to an acceptable level that is near the minimum without jeopardizing the success of the mission. The on-board flight targeting uses a rule-based system to select the pursuit vehicle phasing orbits and uses precise navigation updates from the pursuit/target spacecraft made possible by the global positioning system receivers/processors on both spacecraft to adjust the phasing orbits and achieve rendezvous. The ascent-to-orbit targeting for the pursuit vehicle has been successfully decoupled from the on-orbit orbit transfer phasing targeting. Typical launch window data have been developed for the heavy lift launch vehicle and cargo transfer vehicle for a Space Station Freedom rendezvous mission
Stress Propagation and Arching in Static Sandpiles
We present a new approach to the modelling of stress propagation in static
granular media, focussing on the conical sandpile constructed from a point
source. We view the medium as consisting of cohesionless hard particles held up
by static frictional forces; these are subject to microscopic indeterminacy
which corresponds macroscopically to the fact that the equations of stress
continuity are incomplete -- no strain variable can be defined. We propose that
in general the continuity equations should be closed by means of a constitutive
relation (or relations) between different components of the (mesoscopically
averaged) stress tensor. The primary constitutive relation relates radial and
vertical shear and normal stresses (in two dimensions, this is all one needs).
We argue that the constitutive relation(s) should be local, and should encode
the construction history of the pile: this history determines the organization
of the grains at a mesoscopic scale, and thereby the local relationship between
stresses. To the accuracy of published experiments, the pattern of stresses
beneath a pile shows a scaling between piles of different heights (RSF scaling)
which severely limits the form the constitutive relation can take ...Comment: 38 pages, 24 Postscript figures, LATEX, minor misspellings corrected,

SIRU development. Volume 1: System development
A complete description of the development and initial evaluation of the Strapdown Inertial Reference Unit (SIRU) system is reported. System development documents the system mechanization with the analytic formulation for fault detection and isolation processing structure; the hardware redundancy design and the individual modularity features; the computational structure and facilities; and the initial subsystem evaluation results
SIMPEL: Circuit model for photonic spike processing laser neurons
We propose an equivalent circuit model for photonic spike processing laser
neurons with an embedded saturable absorber---a simulation model for photonic
excitable lasers (SIMPEL). We show that by mapping the laser neuron rate
equations into a circuit model, SPICE analysis can be used as an efficient and
accurate engine for numerical calculations, capable of generalization to a
variety of different laser neuron types found in literature. The development of
this model parallels the Hodgkin--Huxley model of neuron biophysics, a circuit
framework which brought efficiency, modularity, and generalizability to the
study of neural dynamics. We employ the model to study various
signal-processing effects such as excitability with excitatory and inhibitory
pulses, binary all-or-nothing response, and bistable dynamics.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
