    T-spline based unifying registration procedure for free-form surface workpieces in intelligent CMM

    With the development of the modern manufacturing industry, the free-form surface is widely used in various fields, and the automatic detection of a free-form surface is an important function of future intelligent three-coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). To improve the intelligence of CMMs, a new visual system is designed based on the characteristics of CMMs. A unified model of the free-form surface is proposed based on T-splines. A discretization method of the T-spline surface formula model is proposed. Under this discretization, the position and orientation of the workpiece would be recognized by point cloud registration. A high accuracy evaluation method is proposed between the measured point cloud and the T-spline surface formula. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has the potential to realize the automatic detection of different free-form surfaces and improve the intelligence of CMMs

    Multiple-sensor integration for efficient reverse engineering of geometry

    This paper describes a multi-sensor measuring system for reverse engineering applications. A sphere-plate artefact is developed for data unification of the hybrid system. With the coordinate data acquired using the optical system, intelligent feature recognition and segmentation algorithms can be applied to extract the global surface information of the object. The coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is used to re-measure the geometric features with a small amount of sampling points and the obtained information can be subsequently used to compensate the point data patches which are measured by optical system. Then the optimized point data can be exploited for accurate reverse engineering of CAD model. The limitations of each measurement system are compensated by the other. Experimental results validate the accuracy and effectiveness of this data optimization approach

    A theoretical insight into morphological operations in surface measurement by introducing the slope transform

    As one of the tools for surface analysis, morphological operations, although not as popular as linear convolution operations (e.g. the Gaussian filter), are really useful in mechanical surface reconstruction, surface filtration, functional simulation etc. By introducing the slope transform originally developed for signal processing into the field of surface metrology, an analytic capability is gained for morphological operations, paralleling that of the Fourier transform in the context of linear convolution. Using the slope transform, the tangential dilation is converted into the addition in the slope domain, just as by the Fourier transform, the convolution switches into the multiplication in the frequency domain. Under the theory of the slope transform, the slope and curvature changes of the structuring element to the operated surface can be obtained, offering a deeper understanding of morphological operations in surface measurement. The derivation of the analytical solutions to the tangential dilation of a sine wave and a disk by a disk are presented respectively. An example of the discretized tangential dilation of a sine wave by the disks with two different radii is illustrated to show the consistency and distinction between the tangential dilation and the classical dilation

    Metrology is the science of measurement, which can be divided into three overlapping activities: (1) the definition of units of measurement, (2) the realization of units of measurement, and (3) the traceability of measurement units. Manufacturing metrology originally implicates the measurement of components and inputs for a manufacturing process to assure they are within specification requirements. It can also be extended to indicate the performance measurement of manufacturing equipment. This Special Issue covers papers revealing novel measurement methodologies and instrumentations for manufacturing metrology from the conventional industry to the frontier of the advanced hi-tech industry. Twenty-five papers are included in this Special Issue. These published papers can be categorized into four main groups, as follows: Length measurement: covering new designs, from micro/nanogap measurement with laser triangulation sensors and laser interferometers to very-long-distance, newly developed mode-locked femtosecond lasers. Surface profile and form measurements: covering technologies with new confocal sensors and imagine sensors: in situ and on-machine measurements. Angle measurements: these include a new 2D precision level design, a review of angle measurement with mode-locked femtosecond lasers, and multi-axis machine tool squareness measurement. Other laboratory systems: these include a water cooling temperature control system and a computer-aided inspection framework for CMM performance evaluation

    Laser Scanning Based Object Detection to Realize Digital Blank Shadows for Autonomous Process Planning in Machining

    The automated process chain of an unmanned production system is a distinct challenge in the technical state of the art. In particular, accurate and fast raw-part recognition is a current problem in small-batch production. This publication proposes a method for automatic optical raw-part detection to generate a digital blank shadow, which is applied for adapted CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) planning. Thereby, a laser-triangulation sensor is integrated into the machine tool. For an automatic raw-part detection and a workpiece origin definition, a dedicated algorithm for creating a digital blank shadow is introduced. The algorithm generates adaptive scan paths, merges laser lines and machine axis data, filters interference signals, and identifies part edges and surfaces according to a point cloud. Furthermore, a dedicated software system is introduced to investigate the created approach. This method is integrated into a CAD/CAM system, with customized software libraries for communication with the CNC (computer numerical control) machine. The results of this study show that the applied method can identify the positions, dimensions, and shapes of different raw parts autonomously, with deviations less than 1 mm, in 2.5 min. Moreover, the measurement and process data can be transferred without errors to different hardware and software systems. It was found that the proposed approach can be applied for rough raw-part detection, and in combination with a touch probe for accurate detection

    Geometrical Error Analysis and Correction in Robotic Grinding

    The use of robots in industrial applications has been widespread in the manufacturing tasks such as welding, finishing, polishing and grinding. Most robotic grinding focus on the surface finish rather than accuracy and precision. Therefore, it is important to advance the technology of robotic machining so that more practical and competitive systems can be developed for components that have accuracy and precision requirement. This thesis focuses on improving the level of accuracy in robotic grinding which is a significant challenge in robotic applications because of the kinematic accuracy of the robot movement which is much more complex than normal CNC machine tools. Therefore, aiming to improve the robot accuracy, this work provides a novel method to define the geometrical error by using the cutting tool as a probe whilst using Acoustic Emission monitoring to modify robot commands and to detect surfaces of the workpiece. The work also includes an applicable mathematical model for compensating machining errors in relation to its geometrical position as well as applying an optimum grinding method to motivate the need of eliminating the residual error when performing abrasive grinding using the robot. The work has demonstrated an improved machining precision level from 50µm to 30µm which is controlled by considering the process influential variables, such as depth of cut, wheel speed, feed speed, dressing condition and system time constant. The recorded data and associated error reduction provide a significant evidence to support the viability of implementing a robotic system for various grinding applications, combining more quality and critical surface finishing practices, and an increased focus on the size and form of generated components. This method could provide more flexibility to help designers and manufacturers to control the final accuracy for machining a product using a robot system
