Innovation and communication technologies + Problem based learning: a new approach for teaching architecture
This article presents the results obtained during its first year of application in the educational innovation project called âNew frameworks of teaching: ICT applied to problem based learning in technical bachelorsâ (PIE 15-166) developed at the School of Architecture in the University of Malaga. This has been focused on the development of educational strategies based on exploiting the potential of ICT, taking as a framework the ABP. Its application on subjects from different areas of knowledge (architectural composition, urban planning, projects and architectural constructions) has allowed assessing the adaptability of this methodology depending on the content. Among the obtained results can be highlighted the improvement in cross curricular coordination between subjects from different fields of studies, providing different ways of synchronous and asynchronous communication between students and teachers to generate a greater interaction between all the involved subjects; increasing in addition the interest and an improvement of the results.Universidad de MĂĄlaga. Notes on some statistical aspects of pottery quantification
The quantification of finds assemblages from excavations, as an aid to the comparative study of assemblages and sites, is a developing and increasingly important aspect of post-excavation analysis. In the area of pottery studies a major influence has been the work of Clive Orton and Paul Tyers, culminating in the recent release of the 'pie-slice' package for computer analysis. Much of the published literature is either highly technical, or of an expository nature which needs a great deal of the technical material and underlying assumptions to be taken on trust. The present paper is intended to be intermediate between these two levels. We address some of the more complex or less obvious issues involved in application of the pie-slice 'philosophy'. A worked example is given to highlight aspects of some of the assumptions and calculations involved. Some attention is given to what can be done outside the pie-slice package. One concern is the analysis of assemblages that have been quantified using estimated vessel equivalents (eves), but not in a manner that allows conversion to pottery information equivalents (pies) in the pie-slice package
On Engineering Support for Business Process Modelling and Redesign
Currently, there is an enormous (research) interest in business process redesign (BPR). Several management-oriented approaches have been proposed showing how to make BPR work. However, detailed descriptions of empirical experience are few. Consistent engineering methodologies to aid and guide a BPR-practitioner are currently emerging. Often, these methodologies are claimed to be developed for business process modelling, but stem directly from information system design cultures. We consider an engineering methodology for BPR to consist of modelling concepts, their representation, computerized tools and methods, and pragmatic skills and guidelines for off-line modelling, communicating, analyzing, (re)designing\ud
business processes. The modelling concepts form the architectural basis of such an engineering methodology. Therefore, the choice, understanding and precise definition of these concepts determine the productivity and effectiveness of modelling tasks within a BPR project. The\ud
current paper contributes to engineering support for BPR. We work out general issues that play a role in the development of engineering support for BPR. Furthermore, we introduce an architectural framework for business process modelling and redesign. This framework consists of a coherent set of modelling concepts and techniques on how to use them. The framework enables the modelling of both the structural and dynamic characteristics of business processes. We illustrate its applicability by modelling a case from service industry. Moreover, the architectural framework supports abstraction and refinement techniques. The use of these techniques for a BPR trajectory are discussed
MatriVasha: A Multipurpose Comprehensive Database for Bangla Handwritten Compound Characters
At present, recognition of the Bangla handwriting compound character has been
an essential issue for many years. In recent years there have been
application-based researches in machine learning, and deep learning, which is
gained interest, and most notably is handwriting recognition because it has a
tremendous application such as Bangla OCR. MatrriVasha, the project which can
recognize Bangla, handwritten several compound characters. Currently, compound
character recognition is an important topic due to its variant application, and
helps to create old forms, and information digitization with reliability. But
unfortunately, there is a lack of a comprehensive dataset that can categorize
all types of Bangla compound characters. MatrriVasha is an attempt to align
compound character, and it's challenging because each person has a unique style
of writing shapes. After all, MatrriVasha has proposed a dataset that intends
to recognize Bangla 120(one hundred twenty) compound characters that consist of
2552(two thousand five hundred fifty-two) isolated handwritten characters
written unique writers which were collected from within Bangladesh. This
dataset faced problems in terms of the district, age, and gender-based written
related research because the samples were collected that includes a verity of
the district, age group, and the equal number of males, and females. As of now,
our proposed dataset is so far the most extensive dataset for Bangla compound
characters. It is intended to frame the acknowledgment technique for
handwritten Bangla compound character. In the future, this dataset will be made

Health Figures: An Open Source JavaScript Library for Health Data Visualization
The way we look at data has a great impact on how we can understand it,
particularly when the data is related to health and wellness. Due to the
increased use of self-tracking devices and the ongoing shift towards preventive
medicine, better understanding of our health data is an important part of
improving the general welfare of the citizens. Electronic Health Records,
self-tracking devices and mobile applications provide a rich variety of data
but it often becomes difficult to understand. We implemented the hFigures
library inspired on the hGraph visualization with additional improvements. The
purpose of the library is to provide a visual representation of the evolution
of health measurements in a complete and useful manner. We researched the
usefulness and usability of the library by building an application for health
data visualization in a health coaching program. We performed a user evaluation
with Heuristic Evaluation, Controlled User Testing and Usability
Questionnaires. In the Heuristics Evaluation the average response was 6.3 out
of 7 points and the Cognitive Walkthrough done by usability experts indicated
no design or mismatch errors. In the CSUQ usability test the system obtained an
average score of 6.13 out of 7, and in the ASQ usability test the overall
satisfaction score was 6.64 out of 7. We developed hFigures, an open source
library for visualizing a complete, accurate and normalized graphical
representation of health data. The idea is based on the concept of the hGraph
but it provides additional key features, including a comparison of multiple
health measurements over time. We conducted a usability evaluation of the
library as a key component of an application for health and wellness
monitoring. The results indicate that the data visualization library was
helpful in assisting users in understanding health data and its evolution over

Semantics for incident identification and resolution reports
In order to achieve a safe and systematic treatment of security protocols, organizations release a number of technical
briefings describing how to detect and manage security incidents. A critical issue is that this document set may suffer from
semantic deficiencies, mainly due to ambiguity or different granularity levels of description and analysis. An approach to
face this problem is the use of semantic methodologies in order to provide better Knowledge Externalization from incident
protocols management. In this article, we propose a method based on semantic techniques for both, analyzing and specifying
(meta)security requirements on protocols used for solving security incidents. This would allow specialist getting better

Making mathematics phenomenal : Based on an Inaugural Professorial Lecture delivered at the Institute of Education, University of London, on 14 March 2012
Mathematics is often portrayed as an 'abstract' cerebral subject, beyond the reach of many. In response, research with digital technology has led to innovative design in which mathematics can be experienced to some extent like everyday phenomena. I examine how careful design can 'phenomenalise' mathematics - that is to say create mathematical artefacts that can be directly experienced to support not only engagement but also focus on key ideas. I argue that mathematical knowledge gained through interaction with suitably designed tools can prioritise powerful reasons for doing mathematics, imbuing it with a sort of utility and offering learners hooks on which they can gradually develop fluency and connected understanding. Illustrative examples are taken from conventional topics such as number, algebra, geometry and statistics but also from novel situations where mathematical methods are juxtaposed with social values. The suggestion that prioritising utility supports a more natural way of learning mathematics emerges directly from constructionist pedagogy and inferentialist philosophy
Culture-based artefacts to inform ICT design: foundations and practice
Cultural aspects frame our perception of the world and direct the many different ways people interact with things in it. For this reason, these aspects should be considered when designing technology with the purpose to positively impact people in a community. In this paper, we revisit the foundations of culture aiming to bring this concept in dialogue with design. To inform design with cultural aspects, we model reality in three levels of formality: informal, formal, and technical, and subscribe to a systemic vision that considers the technical solution as part of a more complex social system in which people live and interact. In this paper, we instantiate this theoretical and methodological view by presenting two case studies of technology design in which culture-based artefacts were employed to inform the design process. We claim that as important as including issues related to culture in the ICT design agendaâfrom the conception to the development, evaluation, and adoption of a technologyâis the need to support the design process with adequate artefacts that help identifying cultural aspects within communities and translating them into sociotechnical requirements. We argue that a culturally informed perspective on design can go beyond an informative analysis, and can be integrated with the theoretical and methodological framework used to support design, throughout the entire design process
