    Ontologies on the semantic web

    Get PDF
As an informational technology, the World Wide Web has enjoyed spectacular success. In just ten years it has transformed the way information is produced, stored, and shared in arenas as diverse as shopping, family photo albums, and high-level academic research. The “Semantic Web” was touted by its developers as equally revolutionary but has not yet achieved anything like the Web’s exponential uptake. This 17 000 word survey article explores why this might be so, from a perspective that bridges both philosophy and IT

    Theatre Appreciation (Online Course)

    Get PDF
Authors\u27 Description: While open resource theatre survey textbooks are available, [our] team has not identified one that is strong enough to meet the objectives of the course as it has been developed. The proposed transformation involves identifying and organizing a broad array of resources to broaden the learning experience of the students. With its free and ready access, the adoption of a variety of expert source material will increase engagement with quality information that will more effectively complete the experience of both applied and academic study. In addition to content-specific student learning outcomes, THEA 1100 is designed to increase the students’ information literacy (Darton State’s QEP) through the course discussion board. The students are required to post researched information for all to discuss according to guidelines that foster critical thinking. The transformation to OER material that is selected from GALILEO and additional reputable sources will increase student facility with academic source material and allow learners to more readily select topics and information of interest to them, enabling a more rigorous and learner-centered approach

Discovering the Literary Relevancy of Watchmen: A Review of the Graphic Novel\u27s Philosophical Themes

    Get PDF
The American comic book, specifically those of the superhero genre, is a medium that has been associated with stagnant, morally upright characters and formulaic plots. However, author Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons changed said stigma with their groundbreaking series Watchmen. An analysis of the work’s storyline, as well as some of the main characters, will reveal the deep philosophical and psychological underpinnings of the graphic novel, and, more importantly, its literary merit. A Christian interpretation of the work will also be presented

Simulation of Magnetic Field Induced Current and Neuron Spiking for Magnetic Seizure Therapy

    Get PDF
Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is currently on trial to treat severe cases of depression. This thesis is concerned with getting a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind MST by employing FEA of brain. The simulations performed via COMSOL helped identify the dimensions and coil types of the MST device as well as the angular probing orientations. Largest induced current due to the externally imposed magnetic field was found in the cerebrospinal fluid which was found to act as a barrier to induce current in the gray matter. In an attempt to relate the induced current to the neuron spiking, a mathematical model was selected for numerical simulation purposes. This model demonstrated the threshold adaptation of the neuron and also predicted the spiking process. These studies are envisaged to provide a more quantitative approach to virtually simulate the MST procedure and hence enhance the clinical trials that are currently underway

Toward a Unified Description of Battery Data

    Get PDF
Battery research initiatives and giga-scale production generate an abundance of diverse data spanning myriad fields of science and engineering. Modern battery development is driven by the confluence of traditional domains of natural science with emerging fields like artificial intelligence and the vast engineering and logistical knowledge needed to sustain the global reach of battery Gigafactories. Despite the unprecedented volume of dedicated research targeting affordable, high-performance, and sustainable battery designs, these endeavours are held back by the lack of common battery data and vocabulary standards, as well as, machine readable tools to support interoperability. An ontology is a data model that represents domain knowledge as a map of concepts and the relations between them. A battery ontology offers an effective means to unify battery-related activities across different fields, accelerate the flow of knowledge in both human- and machine-readable formats, and support the integration of artificial intelligence in battery development. Furthermore, a logically consistent and expansive ontology is essential to support battery digitalization and standardization efforts, such as, the battery passport. This review summarizes the current state of ontology development, the needs for an ontology in the battery field, and current activities to meet this need.publishedVersio
