Applying Universal Design for Learning to Study Abroad Programs: A Best Practices Model for Education Abroad Professionals

In 2015–2016, 8.8 percent of students with disabilities studied abroad, a significant increase from the academic year of 2014–2015 where 5.3 percent of students with disabilities studied abroad. Despite the small percentage, several organizations are working to increase access within international education. The initiative Generation Study Abroad aims to double the number of students who study abroad by 2020. Students and professionals are creating resources, offering scholarships, and more to increase student participation in study abroad. As a person with a disability, and a professional who works closely with universities and students around access, I designed a program on behalf of Abroad With Disabilities (AWD) introducing Universal Design for Learning (UDL). International Studies Abroad (ISA, third-party provider) will provide support with the design and implementation. The program is four weeks total—two weeks online and two weeks in person in Costa Rica. The purpose of the program is to develop Education Abroad professionals’ awareness of UDL for purposes of increasing access within study abroad. UDL is meant to be used in conjunction with a curriculum to increase access for multiple individuals. The proposed program Applying Universal Design for Learning to Study Abroad Programs: A Best Practices Model for Education Abroad Professionals will invite 8-18 individuals to participate online and abroad. During the program participants will observe how UDL can be modeled and develop tools, skills, and knowledge, to increase access at their workplaces. After completing all program requirements, participants will receive a certificate of completion emphasizing their knowledge, skills, awareness, and work with UDL within Education Abroad. This capstone paper demonstrates how this program will be designed, and introduces methods on how to increase access during the program design phase for professionals to reference in their work

ZOTERO – open source software for managing the bibliographic references

Zotero je program otvorenog koda unutar Mozzila WEB-preglednika namijenjen automatskom dohvaćanju, uređivanju i upravljanju bibliografskim bilješkama; eksportiranju istih u razne formate i izradi bibliografije različitih stilova. Razvili su ga Center for History and New Media na George Mason University. Osim primjene uspješnih osobina svojih prethodnika, iskorištava i dostignuća modernih softvera i mrežnih aplikacija: iTunes-a i del.icio.us-a, osiguravajući interakciju, stavljanje oznaka i napredno pretraživanje. Jednako dobro funkcionira i offline, osim što tada, dakako, ne dohvaća online jedinice pohranjene u zbirkama. Članak opisuje njegove mogućnosti i kompatibilnost s određenim standardima, naglašavajući njegovu primjenljivost u knjižničarstvu. Detaljnija usporedba pojedinih programa za upravljanje bibliografskim bilješkama nije predmet ovog rada.Zotero is an open source program inside the Mozilla Firefox web browser intended for automatic retrieval, organization and reference management, reference export into various formats, and creation of bibliographies of different styles. It has been developed by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. Reference management programs (reference managers) store and organize papers cited by users. They are intended for researchers, teachers, students, and librarians, and are used for creating personal databases which contain specific references important to each user. Zotero promotes a new approach to developing tools for reference management. Unlike its predecessors (EndNote, RefWorks, ProCite) which represented separate applications, Zotero has occupied the place where the users are seeking information on the web, inside the Mozilla Firefox web browser. Along with the application of successful features of its predecessors, Zotero uses achievements of modern software and web applications such as iTunes and del.icio.is, providing interaction, tagging, and advanced search. It works equally well off-line, except that then, of course, it does not reach on-line units which are stored in the collections. This article presents the main functions of Zotero and its compatibility with specific standards, emphasizing its application in libraries. Finally, we must add that a more detailed comparison of reference management applications is not a theme of this article

Embedded Librarians and the TEACH Act

Embedded librarians who work in online courses in American post-secondary institutions should embrace the Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization Act, or TEACH Act, the federal law that governs online teaching and learning. As embedded librarians take on online instructional assignments, knowledge of TEACH will provide guidance in their role as online instructors. In addition, as they come to a better understanding of TEACH and copyright issues the law covers, based in part on their knowledge of copyright concerns in library-related situations, embedded librarians will have more clarity about the work they can and cannot do in an online environment. Finally, as embedded librarians increase their presence in online classes in varied ways, the embedded librarian position evolves into a version of Bell and Shank\u27s blended librarian who serves as both a librarian and educator, and becomes a more valuable member of the academic community. The current lack of discussion about the provisions of the TEACH Act among embedded librarians who write about the work they have done in online courses, however, is a troubling sign. Knowledge of the TEACH Act will help protect embedded librarians and others from copyright infringement and aid in the further development of embedded librarianship
