ADI splitting schemes for a fourth-order nonlinear partial differential equation from image processing
We present directional operator splitting schemes for the numerical solution of a fourth-order, nonlinear partial differential evolution equation which arises in image processing. This equation constitutes the H−1-gradient flow of the total variation and represents a prototype of higher-order equations of similar type which are popular in imaging for denoising, deblurring and inpainting problems. The efficient numerical solution of this equation is very challenging due to the stiffness of most numerical schemes. We show that the combination of directional splitting schemes with implicit time-stepping provides a stable and computationally cheap numerical realisation of the equation
Solving eigenvalue problems on curved surfaces using the Closest Point Method
Eigenvalue problems are fundamental to mathematics and science. We present a
simple algorithm for determining eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the
Laplace--Beltrami operator on rather general curved surfaces. Our algorithm,
which is based on the Closest Point Method, relies on an embedding of the
surface in a higher-dimensional space, where standard Cartesian finite
difference and interpolation schemes can be easily applied. We show that there
is a one-to-one correspondence between a problem defined in the embedding space
and the original surface problem. For open surfaces, we present a simple way to
impose Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions while maintaining second-order
accuracy. Convergence studies and a series of examples demonstrate the
effectiveness and generality of our approach
Proceedings for the ICASE Workshop on Heterogeneous Boundary Conditions
Domain Decomposition is a complex problem with many interesting aspects. The choice of decomposition can be made based on many different criteria, and the choice of interface of internal boundary conditions are numerous. The various regions under study may have different dynamical balances, indicating that different physical processes are dominating the flow in these regions. This conference was called in recognition of the need to more clearly define the nature of these complex problems. This proceedings is a collection of the presentations and the discussion groups
Numerical Computations with H(div)-Finite Elements for the Brinkman Problem
The H(div)-conforming approach for the Brinkman equation is studied
numerically, verifying the theoretical a priori and a posteriori analysis in
previous work of the authors. Furthermore, the results are extended to cover a
non-constant permeability. A hybridization technique for the problem is
presented, complete with a convergence analysis and numerical verification.
Finally, the numerical convergence studies are complemented with numerical
examples of applications to domain decomposition and adaptive mesh refinement.Comment: Minor clarifications, added references. Reordering of some figures.

Spectral methods for CFD
One of the objectives of these notes is to provide a basic introduction to spectral methods with a particular emphasis on applications to computational fluid dynamics. Another objective is to summarize some of the most important developments in spectral methods in the last two years. The fundamentals of spectral methods for simple problems will be covered in depth, and the essential elements of several fluid dynamical applications will be sketched
Numerical solution of gravitational dynamics in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes
A variety of gravitational dynamics problems in asymptotically anti-de Sitter
(AdS) spacetime are amenable to efficient numerical solution using a common
approach involving a null slicing of spacetime based on infalling geodesics,
convenient exploitation of the residual diffeomorphism freedom, and use of
spectral methods for discretizing and solving the resulting differential
equations. Relevant issues and choices leading to this approach are discussed
in detail. Three examples, motivated by applications to non-equilibrium
dynamics in strongly coupled gauge theories, are discussed as instructive test
cases. These are gravitational descriptions of homogeneous isotropization,
collisions of planar shocks, and turbulent fluid flows in two spatial
dimensions.Comment: 70 pages, 19 figures; v4: fixed minus sign typo in last term of eqn.
