Peacebuilding: A broad review of approaches, policies and practices
This background paper has been produced for a workshop on “Civil society views on next generation peacebuilding and conflict prevention policy and programming issues and responses”, convened by Peacebuild in Ottawa on March 14, 2011 with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade
Finding aircraft collision-avoidance strategies using policy search methods
A progress report describing the application of policy gradient and policy search by dynamic programming methods to an aircraft collision avoidance problem inspired by the requirements of next-generation TCAS
Performance Considerations for Gigabyte per Second Transcontinental Disk-to-Disk File Transfers
Moving data from CERN to Pasadena at a gigabyte per second using the next
generation Internet requires good networking and good disk IO. Ten Gbps
Ethernet and OC192 links are in place, so now it is simply a matter of
programming. This report describes our preliminary work and measurements in
configuring the disk subsystem for this effort. Using 24 SATA disks at each
endpoint we are able to locally read and write an NTFS volume is striped across
24 disks at 1.2 GBps. A 32-disk stripe delivers 1.7 GBps. Experiments on higher
performance and higher-capacity systems deliver up to 3.5 GBps
Expanding First Generation Student Support Services at VCU
This project aims to increase first-generation student outcomes by taking existing YouFirst programming to scale. The team proposes to expand university outreach and to leverage expanded engagement into the construction of a First Gen Network through a university-wide ambassador program. This network will grow programming over the next three to five years through annual faculty and staff outreach and the creation of a pipeline for cross-unit communication and collaboration
Long-Term Health Care Planning: A Subset of Farm Transition Programming
Farm transition programming has been a valuable addition to Extension programming efforts. An often overlooked subset of farm transition programming is a discussion regarding long-term health care planning. Research supports the need for long-term health care planning. The probability of having some sort of long-term health care issue in one\u27s lifetime is high. This includes a large percentage of people under the age of 65. Health care costs, including long-term care, are increasing at alarming rates. These costs can potentially cripple a farm business financially as well as impede the transition of the business to the next generation
Next-Generation SDN and Fog Computing: A New Paradigm for SDN-Based Edge Computing
In the last few years, we have been able to see how terms like Mobile Edge Computing, Cloudlets, and Fog computing have arisen as concepts that reach a level of popularity to express computing towards network Edge. Shifting some processing tasks from the Cloud to the Edge brings challenges to the table that might have been non-considered before in next-generation Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Efficient routing mechanisms, Edge Computing, and SDN applications are challenging to deploy as controllers are expected to have different distributions. In particular, with the advances of SDN and the P4 language, there are new opportunities and challenges that next-generation SDN has for Fog computing. The development of new pipelines along with the progress regarding control-to-data plane programming protocols can also promote data and control plane function offloading. We propose a new mechanism of deploying SDN control planes both locally and remotely to attend different challenges. We encourage researchers to develop new ways to functionally deploying Fog and Cloud control planes that let cross-layer planes interact by deploying specific control and data plane applications. With our proposal, the control and data plane distribution can provide a lower response time for locally deployed applications (local control plane). Besides, it can still be beneficial for a centralized and remotely placed control plane, for applications such as path computation within the same network and between separated networks (remote control plane)
