Multimedia information technology and the annotation of video

    Get PDF
The state of the art in multimedia information technology has not progressed to the point where a single solution is available to meet all reasonable needs of documentalists and users of video archives. In general, we do not have an optimistic view of the usability of new technology in this domain, but digitization and digital power can be expected to cause a small revolution in the area of video archiving. The volume of data leads to two views of the future: on the pessimistic side, overload of data will cause lack of annotation capacity, and on the optimistic side, there will be enough data from which to learn selected concepts that can be deployed to support automatic annotation. At the threshold of this interesting era, we make an attempt to describe the state of the art in technology. We sample the progress in text, sound, and image processing, as well as in machine learning

Concerned by increased problems about the students’ reading quality, this study was carried out to investigate the reading approach of English major students of Ambo University. To achieve this objective, all 52(31 male and 21 female) English major students of the University were purposely selected for the study because the number of the students is small to manage. Both quantitative and qualitative data were obtained from the respondents through Reading Achievement Tests, Questionnaire and Structured Interview and analyzed accordingly. The study mainly focused on the students’ approach to reading (adapted top-down or bottom-up) and the students’ ability to identify the main ideas and details, explicitly stated and implied information, the purpose and the tone of authors in five different reading genres: dialogues, directions, article, essays, and poems.  The overall result of the study showed that 89.7% of the University students were exclusively limited to bottom-up approaches to reading and frustrated to determine the main ideas and implied information in the texts. In other words, no student answered more than 78% in reading comprehension items correctly in the tests. Moreover, half of the students could not answer above 50% in the comprehension questions. Therefore, the prescriptions for the solution  to the problem lies in bringing about improvement in the students’ interactive approach to reading and thereby, improve students’ ability to identify the main ideas and details, explicitly stated and implied information, the purpose and the tone of authors in different reading genres: dialogues, articles, essays, directions and poem

    Get PDF
Technology has long been known to enable globalization in ways previously not thought possible, with instantaneous communication allowing members of organizations all across the globe to communicate and share information with little to no delay. However, as the effects of globalization have become more prominent, they have in turn helped to shape the very technologies that enable these processes. These three essays analyze three examples of how these two processes – globalization and technological development – impact one another. The first looks at a national policy level, attempting to understand how increased possibilities for inside leakers can force governments to consider asylum requests. The second analyzes the issue at the level of corporations, attempting to understand how and why business leaders choose to hire individuals from other countries. The third and final essay analyzes the issue at the most micro level, studying a potential application that could help analyze linguistic factors that have taken a more prominent role in a more globalized society

Context clues are valuable tools employed by authors to assist readers in comprehending unfamiliar or complex vocabulary. These clues, whether intentionally or inadvertently provided, facilitate the reader's understanding and interpretation of the word in question. Drawing upon Bauman's theoretical framework, the present study sought to investigate the diverse contextual cues utilized by the author within the literary work entitled "Jet Black and the Ninja Wind." The primary objective of this investigation was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the semantic nuances associated with unfamiliar lexical items employed in the literary work "Jet Black and the Ninja Wind." Additionally, this study aimed to identify and analyze the predominant types of contextual cues prominently present within the book above. In this study, a descriptive qualitative approach was utilized by the researcher. The data collection method employed in this study involved the utilization of documentation as a means to gather relevant information. The human instrument, the researcher herself, was utilized as the primary instrument in this research endeavor. The data analysis process in this study consisted of three distinct stages: data condensing, data displaying, and conclusion drawing. Investigator triangulation was also employed in this study to corroborate and substantiate the findings derived from the comprehensive analysis of the collected data. After conducting an extensive examination of Jet Black and the Ninja Wind, 56 unfamiliar terms were identified. These terms were subsequently categorized into four distinct groups, taking into consideration contextual clues that suggested each group possessed a particular semantic significance. The categorization of context hint types encompasses inference/general cues, synonym/restatement clues, antonym/contrast clues, and definition/explanation clues. In the literary work entitled "Jet Black and the Ninja Wind," the author predominantly utilized various types of context clues, including but not limited to synonym/restatement clues, inference/general hint clues, definition/explanation clues, and antonym/contrast clues
