Informatic system for a global tissue–fluid biorepository with a graph theory–oriented graphical user interface
The Richard Floor Biorepository supports collaborative studies of extracellular vesicles (EVs) found in human fluids and tissue specimens. The current emphasis is on biomarkers for central nervous system neoplasms but its structure may serve as a template for collaborative EV translational studies in other fields. The informatic system provides specimen inventory tracking with bar codes assigned to specimens and containers and projects, is hosted on globalized cloud computing resources, and embeds a suite of shared documents, calendars, and video-conferencing features. Clinical data are recorded in relation to molecular EV attributes and may be tagged with terms drawn from a network of externally maintained ontologies thus offering expansion of the system as the field matures. We fashioned the graphical user interface (GUI) around a web-based data visualization package. This system is now in an early stage of deployment, mainly focused on specimen tracking and clinical, laboratory, and imaging data capture in support of studies to optimize detection and analysis of brain tumour–specific mutations. It currently includes 4,392 specimens drawn from 611 subjects, the majority with brain tumours. As EV science evolves, we plan biorepository changes which may reflect multi-institutional collaborations, proteomic interfaces, additional biofluids, changes in operating procedures and kits for specimen handling, novel procedures for detection of tumour-specific EVs, and for RNA extraction and changes in the taxonomy of EVs. We have used an ontology-driven data model and web-based architecture with a graph theory–driven GUI to accommodate and stimulate the semantic web of EV science

Corporate Smart Content Evaluation
Nowadays, a wide range of information sources are available due to the
evolution of web and collection of data. Plenty of these information are
consumable and usable by humans but not understandable and processable by
machines. Some data may be directly accessible in web pages or via data feeds,
but most of the meaningful existing data is hidden within deep web databases
and enterprise information systems. Besides the inability to access a wide
range of data, manual processing by humans is effortful, error-prone and not
contemporary any more. Semantic web technologies deliver capabilities for
machine-readable, exchangeable content and metadata for automatic processing
of content. The enrichment of heterogeneous data with background knowledge
described in ontologies induces re-usability and supports automatic processing
of data. The establishment of “Corporate Smart Content” (CSC) - semantically
enriched data with high information content with sufficient benefits in
economic areas - is the main focus of this study. We describe three actual
research areas in the field of CSC concerning scenarios and datasets
applicable for corporate applications, algorithms and research. Aspect-
oriented Ontology Development advances modular ontology development and
partial reuse of existing ontological knowledge. Complex Entity Recognition
enhances traditional entity recognition techniques to recognize clusters of
related textual information about entities. Semantic Pattern Mining combines
semantic web technologies with pattern learning to mine for complex models by
attaching background knowledge. This study introduces the afore-mentioned
topics by analyzing applicable scenarios with economic and industrial focus,
as well as research emphasis. Furthermore, a collection of existing datasets
for the given areas of interest is presented and evaluated. The target
audience includes researchers and developers of CSC technologies - people
interested in semantic web features, ontology development, automation,
extracting and mining valuable information in corporate environments. The aim
of this study is to provide a comprehensive and broad overview over the three
topics, give assistance for decision making in interesting scenarios and
choosing practical datasets for evaluating custom problem statements. Detailed
descriptions about attributes and metadata of the datasets should serve as
starting point for individual ideas and approaches

The application of aerospace technology to the solution of public health and industrial problems is reported. Data cover: (1) development of an externally rechargeable cardiac pacemaker, (2) utilization of ferrofluids-colloidal suspensions of ferrite particles - in the efficient separation of nonferrous metals as Ni, Zn, Cu, and Al from shredded automobile scrap, and (3) development of a breathing system for fire fighters
Peripheral-Blood Stem Cells versus Bone Marrow from Unrelated Donors
BACKGROUND
Randomized trials have shown that the transplantation of filgrastim-mobilized peripheral-blood stem cells from HLA-identical siblings accelerates engraftment but increases the risks of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), as compared with the transplantation of bone marrow. Some studies have also shown that peripheral-blood stem cells are associated with a decreased rate of relapse and improved survival among recipients with high-risk leukemia.
METHODS
We conducted a phase 3, multicenter, randomized trial of transplantation of peripheral-blood stem cells versus bone marrow from unrelated donors to compare 2-year survival probabilities with the use of an intention-to-treat analysis. Between March 2004 and September 2009, we enrolled 551 patients at 48 centers. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to peripheral-blood stem-cell or bone marrow transplantation, stratified according to transplantation center and disease risk. The median follow-up of surviving patients was 36 months (interquartile range, 30 to 37).
RESULTS
The overall survival rate at 2 years in the peripheral-blood group was 51% (95% confidence interval [CI], 45 to 57), as compared with 46% (95% CI, 40 to 52) in the bone marrow group (P=0.29), with an absolute difference of 5 percentage points (95% CI, −3 to 14). The overall incidence of graft failure in the peripheral-blood group was 3% (95% CI, 1 to 5), versus 9% (95% CI, 6 to 13) in the bone marrow group (P=0.002). The incidence of chronic GVHD at 2 years in the peripheral-blood group was 53% (95% CI, 45 to 61), as compared with 41% (95% CI, 34 to 48) in the bone marrow group (P=0.01). There were no significant between-group differences in the incidence of acute GVHD or relapse.
CONCLUSIONS
We did not detect significant survival differences between peripheral-blood stem-cell and bone marrow transplantation from unrelated donors. Exploratory analyses of secondary end points indicated that peripheral-blood stem cells may reduce the risk of graft failure, whereas bone marrow may reduce the risk of chronic GVHD. Resource information on the transfer of aerospace technology to other sectors of the U.S. economy is presented. The contents of this notebook are divided into three sections: (1) benefit cases, (2) transfer overview, and (3) indexes. Transfer examples relevant to each subject area are presented. Pertinent transfer data are given. The Transfer Overview section provides a general perspective for technology transfer from NASA to other organizations. In addition to a description of the basic transfer modes, the selection criteria for notebook examples and the kinds of benefit data they contain are also presented

The contents are divided into three sections: (1) transfer overview, (2) benefit cases, and (3) indexes. The transfer overview section provides a general perspective for technology transfer from NASA to other organizations. In addition to a description of the basic transfer modes, the selection criteria for notebook examples and the kinds of benefit data they contain are also presented. The benefits section is subdivided into nineteen subject areas. Each subsection presents one or more key issues of current interest, with discrete transfer cases related to each key issue. Additional transfer examples relevant to each subject area are then presented. Pertinent transfer data are given at the end of each example
