    A survey of an introduction to fault diagnosis algorithms

    This report surveys the field of diagnosis and introduces some of the key algorithms and heuristics currently in use. Fault diagnosis is an important and a rapidly growing discipline. This is important in the design of self-repairable computers because the present diagnosis resolution of its fault-tolerant computer is limited to a functional unit or processor. Better resolution is necessary before failed units can become partially reuseable. The approach that holds the greatest promise is that of resident microdiagnostics; however, that presupposes a microprogrammable architecture for the computer being self-diagnosed. The presentation is tutorial and contains examples. An extensive bibliography of some 220 entries is included

    Graph theory is applicable to the solving of problems in nearly every field of scientific study. The purpose of this thesis is to consider its applications in representing and analyzing digital computers. Fundamental graph theory definitions, the types and the properties of the directed graphs, the matrix representation, and several reduction techniques are discussed. The blocking gate method for diagnosing computer systems is described and applied to the Scientific Control Corporation (SCC) 650 for its fault-diagnosis. Microprogramming has been a significant trend in hardware and software designs of computers. Microprogrammed computers are discussed in comparison to conventional computers. A general scheme utilizing four nodes generates directed graphs for both types of architecture.     Fault-tolerant computer study

    A set of building block circuits is described which can be used with commercially available microprocessors and memories to implement fault tolerant distributed computer systems. Each building block circuit is intended for VLSI implementation as a single chip. Several building blocks and associated processor and memory chips form a self checking computer module with self contained input output and interfaces to redundant communications buses. Fault tolerance is achieved by connecting self checking computer modules into a redundant network in which backup buses and computer modules are provided to circumvent failures. The requirements and design methodology which led to the definition of the building block circuits are discussed

    The Longer Term Effects of Federal Subsidies on Firm Commercialization and Survival:Evidence from the Advanced Technology Program

    The goal of this dissertation is to determine the longer term (5-10 year) causal impact of federal R&D subsidies on firms’ survival outcomes and commercialization behavior. The data are small firms which applied to the 1998-2000 Advanced Technology Program (ATP) competitions. A variant of the research design pioneered by Heckman (1979) allows for inherent pre-award differences between awarded and non-awarded firms to be taken into account. This dissertation finds that receiving an ATP award has a positive and significant causal impact on a firm’s survival chances and new product announcements, but not on the more general likelihood of it commercializing any of its research.Doctor of Philosoph
