In Defense of Public Service: Union Strategy in Transition

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] Public sector unions have displayed healthy durability for the past twenty years, apparently immune to the economic and political forces that have buffeted the broader labor movement. While unions in the private economy have lost power and seen density decline by more than half, unions of government workers have retained influence and market share. Early in the twenty first century there are signs that this era of relative comfort may be coming to an end. In the 1980s private sector unions were sent reeling by the combined forces of globalization, deregulation and increased management hostility. Today their public sector associates face the parallel threats of massive budget deficits, privatization and the expanded power of the Republican right. When unions addressed their conundrum in the private economy two decades ago, inertia and strategic rigidity forestalled an effective response (Hurd 1998). Today public sector unions are determined to avoid similar mistakes and intend to confront systematically the challenges that they face

a practical example of the cultural consultant experimenta and the project Amorim 2020

Up until now design and architectural projects without commercial value have been carried out by larger corporations that have had enough resources to expand in these areas with long-term perspectives and become cultural mediators. However, as a result of the growing trend to evolve from philanthropic donations to strategic CSR, intermediary smaller organisations have emerged as cultural consultants, providing tailored solutions aligned with the vision and the needs of a company. Given the author’s internship experience in the cultural consultant experimenta, this thesis aims to define, illustrate and suggests evaluation methods for design and architectural projects as well as provide a practical exemplification with Amorim 2020. Acknowledging the current complex situation in terms of value creation measurement of these kind of projects, but considering its relevance, a broader framework based on the SROI methodology is finally proposed, together with recommendations and potential lines of actions on its application

Information Metamorphosis in Physics and Astronomy Libraries

There is an enormous range of available information in the world. The role of the library is to select, acquire, organise and make available an appropriate subset of these resources. Information technology has changed the format of the information, thus enhancing the quality and accessibility. Library has a great responsibility in this changed Digital World of information to identify the required sources, suitable and essential for its consumption

Leadership in Academia: Dean’s Disease – Its Sources, Seductions, and Solutions

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the behavioral dysfunction known colloquially as “dean’s disease” in terms of the classic group of mortal sins to which we are all susceptible and the particular problems faced when serving in an administrative capacity in academia. Practical remedies for those afflictions are suggested based upon the available literature, more specifically Bediean (2002) and Spritzer (2004) as well as the author’s own experiences

Dynamic Energy Budget model parameter estimation for the bivalve Mytilus californianus: Application of the covariation method

Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models serve as a powerful tool for describing the flow of energy through organ- ismsfrom assimilation offoodtoutilization for maintenance, growth andreproduction. The DEB theoryhas been successfully applied to several bivalve species to compare bioenergetic and physiological strategies for the utili- zation of energy. In particular, mussels within the Mytilus edulis complex (M. edulis,M. galloprovincialis , and M. trossulus) have been the focus of many studies due to their economic and ecological importance, and their worldwide distribution. However, DEB parameter values have never been estimated for Mytilus californianus ,a species that is an ecological dominant on rocky intertidal shores on the west coast of North America and which likely varies considerably from mussels in the M. edulis complex in its physiology. We estimated a set of DEB parameters for M. californianus using the covariation method estimation procedure and compared these to parameter values from other bivalve species. Model parameters were used to compare sensitivity to environ- mental variability among species, as a first examination of how strategies for physiologically contending with environmental change by M. californianus may differ from those of other bivalves. Results suggest that based on the parameter set obtained, M. californianus has favorable energetic strategies enabling it to contend with a range of environmental conditions. For instance, the allocation fraction of reserve to soma ( \u3ba ) is among the highest of any bivalves, which is consistent with the observation that this species can survive over a wide range of environmental conditions, including prolonged periods of starvatio
