    Design and Implementation of Bio-inspired Underwater Electrosense

    Underwater electrosense, manipulating underwater electric field for sensing purpose, is a growing technology bio-inspired by weakly electric fish that can navigate in dark or cluttered water. We studied its theoretical foundations and developed sophisticated sensing algorithms including some first-introduced techniques such as discrete dipole approximation (DDA) and convolutional neural networks (CNN), which were tested and validated by simulation and a planar sensor prototype. This work pave a solid way to applications on practical underwater robots

    Underwater robots equipped with artificial electric sense for the exploration of unconventional aquatic niches

    International audienceThis article presents different use of the electric field perception in the context of underwater robot navigation. To illustrate the developed navigation behaviours we will introduce a recently launched european project named subCULTron and will show some simulation and experimentation results. The project sub- CULTron aims at achieving long-term collective robot exploration and monitoring of underwater environments. The demonstration will take place in the lagoon of Venice, a large shallow embayment composed of salt turbib water that represents a challenging environment for underwater robots as common sensor like vision or acoustic are difficult to handle. To overcome turbidity and confinement problems our robots will be equipped with artificial electric sensors that will be used as the main sensorial modality for navigation. Electric sense is a bio-inspired sense that has been developed by several species of fish living in turbib and confined underwater environment. In this paper, many different robotic behaviours based on the electric field perception will be presented, in particular we will address reactive navigation, object/robots detection, and object localization and estimation

    Low cost underwater acoustic localization

    Over the course of the last decade, the cost of marine robotic platforms has significantly decreased. In part this has lowered the barriers to entry of exploring and monitoring larger areas of the earth's oceans. However, these advances have been mostly focused on autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) or shallow water autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). One of the main drivers for high cost in the deep water domain is the challenge of localizing such vehicles using acoustics. A low cost one-way travel time underwater ranging system is proposed to assist in localizing deep water submersibles. The system consists of location aware anchor buoys at the surface and underwater nodes. This paper presents a comparison of methods together with details on the physical implementation to allow its integration into a deep sea micro AUV currently in development.     First results on a sensor bio-inspired by electric fish

    This article presents the first results of a work which aims at designing an active sensor inspired by the electric fish. Its interest is its potential for robotics underwater navigation and exploration tasks in conditions where vision and sonar would meet difficulty. It could also be used as a complementary omnidirectional, short range sense to vision and sonar. Combined with a well defined engine geometry, this sensor can be modeled analytically. In this article, we focus on a particular measurement mode where one electrode of the sensor acts as a current emitter and the others as current receivers. In spite of the high sensitivity required by electric sense, the first results show that we can obtain a detection range of the order of the sensor length, which suggests that this sensor principle could be used in future for robotics obstacle avoidance

    Underwater Celestial Navigation Using the Polarization of Light Fields

    Global-scale underwater navigation presents challenges that modern technology has not solved. Current technologies drift and accumulate errors over time (inertial measurement), are accurate but short-distance (acoustic), or do not sufficiently penetrate the air-water interface (radio and GPS). To address these issues, I have developed a new mode of underwater navigation based on the passive observation of patterns in the polarization of in-water light. These patterns can be used to infer the sun__s relative position, which enables the use of celestial navigation in the underwater environment. I have developed an underwater polarization video camera based on a bio-inspired polarization image sensor and the image processing and inference algorithms for estimating the sun__s position. My system estimates heading with RMS error of 6.02_ and global position with RMS error of 442 km. Averaging experimental results from a single site yielded a 0.38_ heading error and a 61 km error in global position. The instrument can detect changes in polarization due to a 0.31_ movement of the sun, which corresponds to 35.2 km of ground movement, with 99% confidence. This technique could be used by underwater vehicles for long-distance navigation and suggests additional ways that marine animals with polarization-sensitive vision could perform both local and long-distance navigation

    Contactless measurement of electric current using magnetic sensors

    We review recent advances in magnetic sensors for DC/AC current transducers, especially novel AMR sensors and integrated fluxgates, and we make critical comparison of their properties. Most contactless electric current transducers use magnetic cores to concentrate the flux generated by the measured current and to shield the sensor against external magnetic fields. In order to achieve this, the magnetic core should be massive. We present coreless current transducers which are lightweight, linear and free of hysteresis and remanence. We also show how to suppress their weak point: crosstalk from external currents and magnetic fields

    Development and Evaluation of a Cost Effective Plant Growth Media Moisture Sensor and Development of an Aqueous Data Transmission System for Irrigation Purposes

    The ability to accurately monitor and transit the moisture content of soilless growing media in the rooting zone is critical for plant-based research, production of high value crops, and other agricultural production. The focus of this study is the development and evaluation of a cost effective moisture sensor designed to measure the plant-available moisture content of growing media and the development of a aqueous data transmission method for relaying this information back to a central location. While there are currently many commercially available soil moisture sensors on the market, the aim of this research is not to develop a more accurate sensor but to design a comparably capable sensor that is more cost effective for the end user to achieve a higher spatial resolution of their moisture measurement by incorporating more sensors over a given area. Traditional wired and wireless communication methods currently used in industry would require additional infrastructure to transmit this moisture data back to central local that adds to the cost of the system. The proposed aqueous data transmission system was designed to relay moisture sensor output utilizing the existing irrigation infrastructure for communication. This system, if commercialized, could improve currently employed automated irrigation for production systems by optimizing water management based on zone requirements, thereby increasing production efficiency while minimizing the potential for off-site movement of contaminates. Likewise, this low cost approach will allow a network of soil moisture sensors to address the spatial variation of moisture content within an area; thus permitting site-specific irrigation within a production area (field, greenhouse etc)

    Underwater Glider Modelling And Analysis For Variable Control Parameters

    Underwater glider is a type of autonomous underwater vehicle that can glide by controlling their buoyancy and attitude using internal actuators. By changing the vehicle’s buoyancy intermittently, forward motion can be achieved. Deriving the mathematical model directly from the system can be too complicated due to time constraints in prototyping development processes. This thesis presents the early development of the USM underwater glider platform consist of prototype development involves vehicle concept design using SolidworksTM, vehicle simulations by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and alternative way of modelling known as system identification in order to obtain the underwater glider system model. The appropriate control parameters for underwater glider control were determined by selecting the ballast rate as the input. Three aspects of the dynamics of a glider will be observed, i.e. net buoyancy, depth of the glider and pitching angle. The best three parametric models that are able to estimate the system correctly are chosen, and the fit between measured and estimated outputs is presented in order to get an optimal underwater glider vehicle model for USM underwater glider platform
